“Here we are meeting Nelson Mandela at the 2001 South Africa Freedom Day concert in Trafalgar Square. We were among the honoured few who got to perform on the day and meet the wonderful man himself after the show.

That’s me in black, my sister Caroline’s on the left and of course the guy is our brother Jim, plus my other sister Sharon was also there.

You can see by the looks on our faces how thrilled we were to meet Mandela

You can see by the looks on our faces how thrilled we were to meet Mandela. We presented him with a traditional Claddagh ring to symbolise love and as far as I’m concerned, he was the very essence of true love and Christianity, to suffer incarceration for 27 years and to come out loving humanity.

We had a nice chat and he said he liked our music.

'Here we are meeting Nelson Mandela at the 2001 South Africa Freedom Day concert'
He was so charming and had a real twinkle in his eye, especially in regard to the ladies! Getting to meet him was a major highlight in a career that started back when we were growing up in County Louth.

It was a happy childhood and I still laugh when I think about when we were playing hide and seek. Jim hid me in the airing cupboard, then when the game was over he just left me there!

We assumed music was a big deal in everyone’s house because it certainly was in ours.

Our parents Gerry and Jean were in a band together doing cover versions and we’d often go along to their shows. By the time I was 15 Jim, who is 10 years older than me, was a session musician and he also had a little eight-track recording studio where all of us began writing songs together.

We auditioned for the film The Commitments and that led to us getting a manager and a record contract.

We were so committed to it. We’d play a pub like we were playing Madison Square Garden and the hard work paid off.

When we became successful, it was phenomenal and suddenly we were manically busy, rushing around the world but very often not being in the right place.

When we had one album at number two in the British charts and another at number one, our parents were at home dancing for joy around the kitchen while we were at a record signing in Detroit for two people.

There have been so many high points, like supporting U2 and The Rolling Stones, and a personal highlight was getting to meet Jon Voight because Midnight Cowboy is my favourite film.

To my shame, I recited a line from the movie rather than being cool, but at least he laughed.

We decided to take a break from the band in 2006 because our personal lives needed a little attention. We wanted to focus on being parents and what have you, and becoming a mum [to Jean, three, and 23-month-old Brett] was such a life changer for me. There are no lie-ins and I’m perpetually tired and coffee-fuelled, but children are the greatest blessing.

It’s funny because my daughter always tells me to stop singing. She goes, ‘It’s hurting my ears,’ and her lip starts quivering, which I guess some readers will think means she has good taste! But I’ve discovered it’s because the band are back together because she asked me, ‘Does this mean you’re not a mummy any more?’ so that’s what the quivering lip is about.

We lost our father to a heart attack this year and it’s a massive loss, but the fact we’re all together again as a band has been really helpful. When you lose somebody, you want to be around people who have that shared history and there’s comfort in it.”

The Corrs’ new album White Light is out now. They tour the UK from January 19. For details, visit thecorrswebsite.com.
