Helsingborg Arena are opened november 30th with a magnificent gala evening, Now we are proud to announce two heavy names, two of Helsingborgs biggest music profiles, to the already strong field of artists participating.
Bjí¶rn Strid and David Andersson, singer and guitarist from the world known metal band Soilwork from Helsingborg will participate in the opening of Helsingborgs Arena. Soilwork who just finished their new album, which will be a double album with the title "The living Infinite", that are being released in march next year. David and Bjí¶rn are also both playing in the celebrated classic rock band The Night Flight orchestra.
- We are very excited to be get to share the stage with so many great artists, from so many different genres. We will perform unique interpretations of both Soilwork and The Night Flight orchestra songs in the opening, Bjí¶rn Strid says.
Anette Olzon has during the past years toured the world as the singer in Nightwish.

- When I was asked to perform in the opening gala I got so happy and proud but also really sad when it clashed with mine and Nightwish South American tour. Now when me and Nightwish have gone seperate ways the window again opened and I am so happy to stand in the Arena in front of all dear people from Helsingborg. And for the very first time I will perform my own solo songs who has never been performed before, so it is a very special evening for me in every way, Anette Olzon says.

Still there are tickets left for the opening and tickets are bought through ticnet.se.

Helsingborgs Arena started to be built in 2009 and is Helsingborgs new main arena for indoor sports, concerts, events, meetings and other events. The location and the arenas multi functionality has opened for it to be a new meeting place for the cities citizens and incoming guests. The arena holds up to 5 500 people.

Since before its known that the big opening gala will be led by two of Swedens biggest TV hosts: Tina Nordstrí¶m and Petter Settman. Ready for the opening are also The Sounds, Veronica Maggio, Robert Wells, Sanne Salomonsen, Eric Saade, Sarah Dawn Finer, Burnt out Punks, Helsingborgs Symphonic Orchestra under Christoffer Norbin. To the accompaniment are also Helsingborgs own concert hall choir contributing.

LIKE A SHOW INSIDE MY HEAD
Copyright: Anette Olzon

Pieces falling down down down
Wishes trembling mind
Seeking for the bright bright light
Darkness cold and blind

Like a show inside my head
Keeps repeating
Find whats gone and said to late
Keeps repeating

Hiding making time fly by
Darkness cold and blind

Like a show inside my head
Keeps repeating
Find whats gone and said to late
Keeps repeating

WATCHING ME FROM AFAR
Copyright: Anette Olzon

Like every wind that blows
And stars that glow
Deep in the darkest night
You´re my light

From all the flowing trees
To little bees
Beneath what´s wrong or right
You´re the air I breathe

Just like a melody
floating over time and space
I see your face
No matter where you are
no matter how near or far
you´re in my heart
like a star
watching me from afar

Deep in the darkest time
your shine on mine
show me the way to climb
do what´s right

For every single word
You´re in my world
The doubts just disappear
you´re the one I hear

Just like a melody
floating over time and space
I see your face
No matter where you are
no matter how near or far
you´re in my heart
like a star
watching me from a far

Excuse me if I am indiscreet, but this is probably the second or third time when I notice this in your posts and I cannot help to feel really sad. Was your Nw departure connected with the fact that you were pregnant? This would be probably more horrible than absolutely any other scenario we could imagine... and so sick and unfair.

I wish you a really really nice day with your little treasures. <3"

Yesterday I went to the studio and me and Niclas had 3 hours of working on a song to see if it´s something to use on my album. What we do now is recording lots of songs I´ve done to see if some of them is album material or not. I have many songs already but it´s always good to have lots to choose from. And I want some more up tempo songs so that´s what we record now in the coming weeks.

The song yesterday is a more metal song and quite weird so it needs lot of work before I feel it´s ok, but we continue in the coming days and then we´ll decide if it´s good enough or not;=)

The song we did some days ago doesn´t feel like a keeper. It´s to weird so we move on today with the other songs so now I´m sitting listening and choosing. And also writing lyrics for a new one. It´s great to have so much to choose from!;=)

Citar
Had a great session in the studio yesterday and did 3 very fast and rough demos with only lead vocals. We do this to save time and listen to what is something to keep or to let go off directly.

What´s weird with a process when making music is that one day I can dislike a song I´ve made but next day with "fresh ears" I like it again;=) haha!

So today I actually LIKE the song we did some days ago. So let´s see what comes out of it in the end.

¿Siempre quisiste cantar? ¿A quíé edad comenzaste?

Poncho SaGo Pregunta: ¿Conoces a Lena Katina ex-Tatu?

No, todavía no :-)

Anette, Gracias: D

¡Les deseo todo lo mejor!

t is with great pleasure that earMUSIC welcomes another great woman of rock, joining the group of exciting female voices releasing their work through the Hamburg-based rock label (among others: Tarja, Skunk Anansie, Chrissie Hynde and Lisa Stansfield).
The woman in question is Anette Olzon.

Talking about Anette’s first solo album, there is a name that can’t not be mentioned...

So let it be… Yes, Anette Olzon – as every metal fan knows – has been the front woman of Finnish symphonic-metal superstars Nightwish for five years before having to leave the band in late 2012.
Although the circumstances belong to the past and Anette is the kind of artist and person who only looks forward, it is a sure fact that those five years have established Anette as one of the highlight of the rock music map on a global scale.
“Does it sound like Nightwish?” It’s the question that everybody would probably like to ask… It doesn’t but it definitely does, would be the most accurate answer. Certainly more precise than denying it does or confirming Anette’s new songs sound like her previous band.

“Shine” has been produced with the collaboration of some of the most successful teams in rock and pop in Scandinavia: the producer Stefan í–rn (songwriter and producer of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest winning track ‘Running Scared’), Johan Glí¶ssner and co-produced by Anette Olzon and Johan Kronlund. The album was mixed by Kronlund, Nicklas Flykt and Ronny Lahti (known for his work with Loreen and Roxette).

The album will be released on February 28th, 2014 by earMUSIC.

"I am so thrilled to finally release my first solo album,” says Anette Olzon. “I’ve been working on it for a long time by now... The album is very personal with songs I have started writing already in 2009 but also very recent songs. The overall message of the album is that life can be really dark and filled with hardship and sadness, but you can always choose to see some light coming through, to make you stronger and full of life - making you SHINE… no matter what."

And what about the musical direction?
“In the end, it is a rock album,” says Anette. “Well, a pop rock album maybe, or would you call it pop metal?” We have heard this one before, didn’t we?

Whether we can define “Shine” a metal album, rock, pop or “pop rock” what would be hard to miss is how strong the songs are and what an extraordinary album it is.
It exceptionally masters the borders between melancholy and hope, between fragility and power, because it showcases an artist who doesn't rest on her laurels but heads boldly into the future. Because it shines.

Ladies first as they say. So when we start of Three Short Questions 2013 Anette Olzon will be first out.
Anette are one of those singers who played on the small circuit and got a break. From Alyson Avenue she got to front Nightwish. Today she’s getting ready to launch a solo career. Let’s hear what Anette has to say about her 2013 and future plans.

1. How would you summarize 2013
2013 started out wonderful with the birth of my third child Mio in march. Then I had some months of doing some songwriting but mainly being a mum full-time until a month ago when I started working really hard on my album due next year so it´s been a great year for me!
2. Will you give any New Years resolution?
No, I think it´s better to make new goals and promises during the whole year if I feel I need to change something.
3. What do you expect from 2014?
The release of my solo album and going out playing my songs live finally feels exciting! Can´t wait to go on stage again and meet all the lovely people coming to listen to my stuff ;=)

Five years ago, Nightwish hired Anette Olzon. In October of last year, it was announced Anette's contract has been terminated due to differences in views. Now she's ready to tell her version of the story:

- "What happened to Tarja happened to me - I was fired"
- The timing wasn't ideal. Nightwish was on tour in the US when Anette got sick and was hospitalized. Moments earlier she had told Tuomas Holopainen about her pregnancy.
- "No one of the band visited me in the hospital. I suggested we'd cancel shows but the boys didn't want to negotiate about that. Floor Jansen had replaced me before I had recovered"
- Anette says she went through same emotions as with a divorce. First weeks went with shock, then arrived anger and sorrow.
- "I wondered what I had done wrong to deserve this. I was also of course worried I wouldn't be able to support my family"

- Their start wasn't easy, band welcomed her well, but critics didn't, and South American fans were crazy (killing threats, people coming to your skin causing panic attacks)
- She tried to push the negative feedback aside, but the pressure grew larger, causing problems with her intimate relationship
- "I stressed my personal life on tour, but didn't want to take it out on the band. I believe the boys saw I was falling apart, but I didn't get much support from them"
- It wasn't easy for Tuomas Holopainen. On the 2008 tour Nightwish had to cancel shows due to Anette's illnesses. The constant stress manifested as recurring flus, causing problems with her voice
- She thinks the tour schedules were too rough
- "Emotionally the toughest part was that the boys decided everything for me. I had no say. If Tuomas decided that now we're go to Africa, off we went"

- Financial inequality caused challenges. The four men of the band control the millions of euros of revenue through Scene Nation. Anette would've wanted to be a worker for that company, but she had to start her own company.
- "The concert salaries and royalties were divided evenly, but other income went directly to the men. Running a company alone was expensive. I had to loan money from the boys to start it up"
- Momma Anka didn't make profit, Scene Nation did
- Even though Anette would've wanted things to go differently, she isn not bitter
- "Often I've thought about calling Tuomas to get resolution. I don't think this is over yet"
- In her own life Anette has moved on. She enjoys normal family life in Helsingborg and is readying her first solo album.
- "Only now I can say I am happy. Bad experiences have their meaning too. I no longer am that overly conscientious girl who tries to please others and pretends that everything is always right"

TAOG : First of all, Congrats with this solo project!, Good-Luck & My Best Wishes for you in this proyect!! it Will Be Succesful!
- Thanks so much, I sure hope so;=)

1.-How Anette Olzon Feels in this moment of her life, now that's a Married Girl with 3 Beautiful Kids, being in one of her most happy times of her life? (presonally i see you happier than before)
- Hi and yes, I feel really blessed and happy. It´s exciting times and also a bit scary.

2.-Forgive me for saying this but....Now we see a ''Bitch'' Anette Olzon, being her true-self, and I like It!!, and that you dont have just 1 Style to be on, are you going to keep just 1 style or will continue trying different ones (talking about clothes)?- Thanks. Well, sometimes being a bitch can be good. It´s important to be tough in this business for sure so a little bit tougher skin is good to have. And I think my style will be as it is now but of course I´ll try different things cause it´s always nice to try out new things now and then.

3.- Now that you're by your own & Free, what we can expect from Anette Olzon? Are we going to see her Dark Side, Shining?
- I think the opposite - I will be more LIGHT and shiny, different from what I´ve been before. My lyrics may be darker but my appearance will be lighter and shine brighter.

4.- You're a Swedish Girl singing in English, but, have you thinked on Singing in Swedish for your solo career?
-Me and Petri my manager talked about it but I actually do not feel comfortable writing lyrics in Swedish so I think I´ll stick with English.

5.- Also have you considered that your mom sings in any of your future solo projects?, that will be so nice! or Even Working, Together With Johan?
- I don´t think mum will sing with me, she has her own things. But I would love to have Johan with me for some gigs.

6.- Apart From Niclas, Who are going to be your Musicians for Shine & Upcoming Tours?
- Niclas won´t come since he has his own things at home. I haven´t decided upon musicians yet even if I have some persons in mind. Most important for me is that they are doing music from the heart and that I like being in their company.

7.- And Talking about Tours, as you can see, you have a BIG latin-american fan-base, are you considering touring there?
- Yes, if there is an interest for me over there.

8.- Can you tell us a bit about Shine song's?, what does all the songs means for you? (it's real that tracklist that's around the web?)... also when we can see the cover/artwork?
- I don´t know which track list you are talking about so can´t say anything about that but the songs are written from my life stories. They are about love, sorrow, happiness and the harder things I´ve been through.

9.- Are you going to have ''guest singers'' on Shine?
- No, I won´t.

10.- Let's talk about something different from Music.... What you'll be doing if you weren't a musician?
- I´ve done so many things and have had many jobs but I would love to be a midvife or a leadership consultant.¨

11.- Do you left your studies or you're continuing them?, you were studying nursery isn't, as you said one day on your blog?
- I am trying to study and I am in one class right now but the problem is that I am releasing my album and that take a lot of my time so it´s hard to get the studies into my schedule. But I hope I can finish my sometime in the coming years.

12.- I'm Blushed to say this.... You're so Sexy!, what do you do apart from excercising to stay Fit? Any diet or kind of food?
- Oh, thanks. I don´t feel so sexy but nice if someone feel I am, haha! I exercise, try to eat well. I follow Weight watchers at the moment to loose the weight I´ve gained during my pregnancy and nursing. I like it since it´s not a diet but learning how to eat and I lost a lot of weight with them after my first son so I know it works.

13.- Which languages you're fluent on? apart from English & Swedish, and which ones you wanna learn?
- Those are the ones. I do know some French and German and I understand Danish and Norwegian. I am ok with the languages I know, I don´t think I´ll learn more languages in this age.

14.- You have a very musical family, will you make that your kids continue that path?
- If they want to, but I won´t make them do music if they don´t want to.

15.- Have you ever thought in studying to be something like chef?, i ask cuz well, i see that you LOVE to cook!
- I actually have gone to Restaurant school but I became a waitress and we learned how to cook too but no, Johan is a head chef and he says to stay away from that job.

16.- Also some fans were asking, about if you knew that Amy Lee it's going to have her first baby? (like you like her music)
- Yes, I read that and I wish her all the best! Being a mum is the best! And yes, I like Evanescence.

17.- So, to finish this, Anything else you want to share or say?
- No, thanks for the questions and take care!

FANS QUESTIONS :

What or Who was your influence for writing Shine?
- Hi! It was my life and everything and everyone I have around me. Both sad things in life as well as my love for others.

*Is Shine, the real shine from Anette Olzon or exist more shine from her?
- it´s the shine from me and there are so much more SHINE that will come from me also in the future.

*What is your favorite color to define Shine?
- Crispy white.

*what is your biggest fear on stage and in your life?
- On stage it´s my stage fright I always have to fight against and in life I am afraid of loosing my loved ones or to having to leave this Earth to early.

*We could see any memory from Alyson Avenue on Shine?
- Not any memory, no, but as in Alyson the melodies are what defines me. For me, a good melody is so important and that´s what Melodic rock, as Alyson springs from, also defines the music. So the legacy from all those Alyson years are for sure in my music.

*what do you think about the 'tags' the people create in music for destroy it and not for enjoy it?
- I´m sorry I do not understand your question.

*do you like some indie bands? For example, Florence and The Machine.
- Yes, I do! I actually LOVE indie bands and I listen to a lot of them and Florence and the Machine are amazing.

*do you had any Bjí¶rk's inspiration on SHINE?
- I love Bjí¶rk but I didn´t think about her when writing the music so if there is any influences it´s due to me having liked her for years.

What do you hope this year for your musical career?
- I hope for a good response of my album and that I can go out and play some smaller tours and gigs with the music and meet the audience. It would be awesome to do a smaller club tour and also I would love to play my music in concert halls with an orchestra as well as in some churches.

What do you think its the biggest reason, for when others try to tear down your dreams?
- Jealousy.

How do you feel now with Shine release? Like its your first Album as soloist
-I feel so happy and excited! Proud and I feel so much more complete now when I sing my own songs.

Will you travel to Suramerica on your first soloist Tour?
- We haven´t planned any tours yet but are starting to talk to agents and booking agencies now and I´ve gotten some nice requests from South America so let´s hope I can come. I would love to visit Chile again!

With the release of Shine, there is the possibility of having a show your in our country (Brazil)?
-I sure hope so! See my previous answer.

What is your kind of voice: soprano, mezzo-soprano or which one?
- I am a soprano.

What are the most representative feelings in your album "Shine"?(I would luv that u do a cover of Anthem, Kamelot. I love that song)
- Oh yes, Anthem is my favourite Kamelot song too so maybe I´ll ask Thomas in Kamelot if I can re-do it.
The feelings in my album are divided between melancholy /sadness and love and warmth. I mix those feelings so the album are both dark as well as light.

How possible is a collaboration with Yulia Volkova, Lena Katina or both from t.A.T.u for your solo work? That would be great!
- Yeah, they are both awesome and I love T.a.t.u! Would be fun for sure!

-On the interview to Menaiset you said that you finally could die your hair the colour you wanted (purple)....
So, when you were in the band the guys didn't let you die your hair any colour that wasn't black or blonde? Why was that?
-No, that wasn´t exactly what I meant. I said that when I applied to be in NW Tuomas asked me to dye my hair black instead of my light blond I had. But they never said I couldn´t color it in any other color after that, but since I sang in a metal band the black hair was more in the style of the band and its music. Now I can have any color since my music isn´t metal.

For you what is better, have a solo career or a band?
- I´ve always loved to be in bands and have never felt I wanted to go solo, but at the moment and with all the events with my former band, I must say I feel better to go solo at this time. I have more control, I can decide everything myself and I can do as long tours as I feel and can still be a good mum to my boys.

*How 'Shine Tour' will work with your ''mother'' life?, are you bringing your kids to the tour?
- We´ll see how we do it. Mio is still so small so I can´t be away from him for a longer period so we might bring the kids but first we need to see where and how long tours I´ll do.

*In your life you sang for a lot of music styles as Musicals, Gospel, Big band, Jazz, AOR, hard rock, metal, In your first solo album, you will sing in some of this styles or you will adventure yourself in new paths?
- My album has been said by those who have listened to it already, that my music has it´s own genre and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I have done so many different music styles during my life. I listen to all different music, I am an all-eater and I have never only been a singer who sings one thing, so when doing my songs there are influences from all these styles and that´s what I will continue with and I don´t want to put a label on my music cause that would only strain me when making new songs.

*Which bands/singers inspired you in this record?
- Not anyone, I didn´t think of sounding like anyone else, I have done my songs from my heart and from where I feel comfortable singing.

*What albums of bands that you like that will be released this year are you excited to listen?
- I actually don´t know what albums are being released but Within Tempation´s new album are of course something I´ll buy.

*Hi Nettie! I'd like to ask you if there's any chance for a concert (or more) in Hungary?
- I don´t know any tour dates yet but let´s hope so.

*And will you choose Permanent musicians for your ''band'' or just ''session'' musicians during Tour?
- I will have session musicians with me.

*I wish all the best for you, your carrer and your family!
- Thanks so much!

Can you recommend me some online clothing stores you like/Shop in, that ships worldwide? Love for you!
- Hi! I love Net-a-porter but a bit expensive. My Theresa as well. For cheaper but cool stuff Shopakira, Nelly.com and Asos.com

*What kind of music do you like/enjoy listening to?
-I love so many different styles depending on day and mood. But Alternative music is one of my favorites.

*Is there going to be any pre-sale for SHINE? My 18th b'day is on feb 13 and i would love to have it by then!!
-Now my album will be one month delayed, but maybe the single will be out a bit earlier. Pre-sales are already out in iTunes.

*Are you going to go on tour to promote SHINE?
-Yes, I am planning so if there´s an interest for it.

*Which is the most personal song for your upcoming album Shine?
- There are a few, actually, but one song called "Moving away" which is written when my mum got ill is very personal for me.

*What was the most challenging thing in the making process of this album?
- It was quite hard to choose only 10 songs since I did have more songs I felt were good too and also the mixing of some songs were a bit hard to get the "right" sound and feeling to them.

*What can we expect from this album?
- An album that are far from what you´ve heard from me before and an album that is an album of songs you can sit and relax and just listen to. I hope my older fans from the metal scene have an open mind since it´s not metal.

*How do you see yourself in 10 years?
- I see myself as a singer who have made several albums and tours, gotten a nice steady audience who like me for me and that i am writing songs also for other artists.

*Do you have some fears about starting a career as a solo artist?
- No, I believe everything will be just fine.

*who is her favorite metal singer? (if you have one)
-I like Sharon den Adel, Tarja, Simone Simons and Amy Lee.

*What was your inspiration in the writing process?
-My life and everyone who has passed in it along the way.

*How many albums do you plan to record?
- Many! :=)

I´ve gotten some requests for the lyrics for LIES so here it is:

LIES
(Anette Olzon, Stefan í–rn, Johan Glí¶ssner)

Verse:
Thousand lights passing by
Stories floating around
Silence is long gone by now
All the wishes we had
Dreams that we shared

I remember the time
Closing down open doors
Making fences grow strong
Burning the plants that had grown
Deep inside from the time when love was our life
Now it´s goodbye

Chorus:
All of the LIES just passing us by
I´m holding to keep it inside
Why no wrong can´t be right
All the wonders are gone
No more flowers will fall tonight
All of the LIES just passing us by

Verse:
Threads of life going by
Precious moments run by
Tossing and turning our minds
All the magic is gone
No more feelings of hope

Will we ever forgive
Will the wounds start to heal
I´m tired of pushing the day
Putting down all behind- moving away

Chorus;
All of the LIES just passing us by
I´m holding to keep it in sight
Why no wrong can´t be right
All the wonders are gone
No more flowers will fall tonight
All that is gone just passing us by

LIES just passing us by
I´m holding to keep it in sight
Why no wrong can´t be right
All the wonders are gone
No more flowers will fall tonight
All that is gone just passing us by

Anette Olzon is due to release her debut solo album, Shine next month.  Ahead of the release I spoke to her to talk about the album, whether or not she has any touring plans, and of course I asked her some questions relating to her time with Nightwish.  Read on to see what she had to say.

Your first solo album, Shine, is due for release at the end of March.  When did you first start writing material for it?

Anette Olzon.  Photo by Patric UllaeusAnette Olzon. Photo by Patric Ullaeus
I started writing in 2009 in the autumn, so some years ago, and the plan was to release it at that time but then I postponed it because I didn’t find a label that suited me and also I got my second child, so that’s why there have been some years between then and now.  This was meant to be a side project between the (Nightwish) tours we had, and that was why I did it in 2009, because we had a bigger break between the albums.

You’ve worked with other songwriters for this album.  How did it work – did they write songs and present them to you or were you working with them on each song?

Mainly I would come up with some melodies and they would help me with the music, but there are also songs like “Shine” where Stefan had made some music and played it for me then I came up with the melody and lyrics.  With some of the songs we just sat down and jammed together with the piano and drums and the songs came from that.  So, it was a little different for each song actually.

What are your inspirations for writing the lyrics?

The lyrics are very personal most of them, not all but most of them have some kind of meaning from my life.  There is one song about my eldest son and there is one song about my husband at the time, so I’ve taken them from my life, autobiographical songs in a way.

“Lies” was written about your divorce wasn’t it?

Yes exactly, not totally about it, but in the mood of it, you know, how you feel when you are in that situation.

Fans reading the lyrics to “Lies” could easily think it’s about the Nightwish split.

Yes but that was also like a divorce, so it suits that situation too.  Being in a band is not like a normal job, it’s like a family so it is like a big divorce when you end something like that too, so I think “Lies” does work for the Nightwish thing too.

That was with the same two guys, Stefan and Johan  [Stefan Orn and Johan Glossner]. Actually that one is one of our favourites, all three of us.  We really like that song and it’s a love song.  You could also think that it’s about someone who has passed away since I’m singing that you’re watching me from afar, but it’s actually about my current husband, when I was on tour, he wasn’t there but I could still feel his presence, so it’s a love song.

Reaction to your video, “Lies” seems to be very positive.

Yeah, it’s amazing.  I had a great vision when it came to the whole video thing.  I knew from the beginning what it was going to look like.  I wanted this Nordic feeling because I think my music is a bit in that style and that’s how I see the whole album of “Shine”, a bit Nordic and Folkish in many ways, and I wanted something very Nordic to show the best of our nature and also of course the snow.  We were lucky enough on the day we were shooting that we got snow because we didn’t have much snow here in the lower part of Sweden but on exactly that day the snow arrived in Gothenburg where we filmed it, so it was great but very cold.  I can’t say it was so enjoyable all the time because I was freezing to death but the video looks really nice and I’m really happy that people like it.  I think they understood the meaning of it you know, the whole vision I had.

A lot of the comments I’ve seen on the video have said how good your voice sounds – I think it sounds fantastic.

Thank you.  It’s nice because it’s easier now to showcase my voice because I do the song by myself. It’s always easier when you come up with the melodies to make it suitable for my range, and where I find it suitable.  In Nightwish I got the songs in a certain key so then I had to adapt my voice to the songs and of course they can be too high or too low.  This time it’s also easier to use the dynamics of my voice to sing in different styles, and “Lies” is a great showcase where you can sing with a lower voice and then a raspy rocky voice and everything, so it’s a good song to show your voice in.

Are there any plans for live shows later in the year?

Yeah I’m really trying to get it together.  The thing we’re working on is trying to find a good booking agent which is of course a bit harder when you’re a new artist, to find a suitable one. I’m hoping my manager can find one this week or next week, and then we will try to plan a tour as soon as possible.

How difficult was it trying to balance touring with Nightwish with raising your son?

When I joined Nightwish I had one child and he was 5 at that time, so it was hard to leave him but at the same time he was not like a little orphan.  It was hard in many ways, but it got harder since I had my second child, Nemo, then you have a baby and it is much harder even if I brought him along.  Now I have three kids so it gets harder and harder.  Of course it depends on the kind of help you get from people around you and your family.  I have a very good network, I have a mum who helps me.  I think the hardest thing for me is missing my children when I’m away, but that’s something you have to deal with in this business.

With three kids, being on tour must be like having a rest for you.

Yes exactly, and that was the thing when I had my second child with me on tour, even if his daddy was there it felt like I couldn’t get any relaxation because I was on stage or I did an interview, and normally you can go and sleep in the bus and get a bit of a rest, but if you have your child with you then you have to be the mum so it was quite demanding for me on the European tour.  I didn’t feel I could relax like in a normal job where you can relax a bit in the day from the family, so it was nice to have the family there but also hard. I think that’s why many musicians go on tour, because some of the guys in Nightwish go on tour to get away from the family, I know.  I didn’t do that but I know some of them did because they felt it was like a holiday.  In a way it can be that.

On the “Showtime Storytime” Nightwish DVD, you don’t appear in the documentary about the Imaginaerum tour.  Why did you request that you not be seen or heard in it?

I said I didn’t want to be in that, it was my decision.  There were many reasons.  First of all we had only talked about the documentary in a loose way before the tour started, that maybe we would do a documentary, and then when everything ended and they kind of fired me in a very bad way, I was quite angry and sad about the situation. Then a few months later they asked my manager if I wanted to pay for this documentary and be in it, and my reaction was Why?  There’s a new singer and they’d done this in a bad way so I didn’t want to participate.  In many ways it was not only because I was angry but also because I didn’t understand why, and also because I didn’t want to have half of the documentary about me and then half about the new singer – there would be comparisons, and I didn’t know how they would showcase me, would they show me in a bad way or a good way.  So the decision has many different layers, but I felt I didn’t want to be part of it, I wanted to leave that part of my life behind me at that point.

One thing I find depressing is how many people seem obsessed with championing their favourite singer as the “best” a band has had and criticising the other singers.  Rather than simply admitting that each singer is different and has their own strengths and weaknesses they constantly compare and criticise.

When I joined Nightwish I had very big shoes to fill and they didn’t make it easy for me, the fans.  It was a hard job for me to take because the fans didn’t approve of me.  We sold more albums than Nightwish ever had in the past, so in that way I succeeded, but they made me feel very insecure and that I had to work so hard to be liked because of those comparisons with Tarja which I find quite amusing because we are so different.  I think music is something where you can’t compete, I don’t think you can say who is best because we are all different and what you like may be something I don’t like and I think we should stop comparing.  They are quite  fanatical some of these fans, and I don’t know why Nightwish have this type of fan because I don’t think all bands have them, but there’s something about Nightwish that made these people quite fanatical.

There is also the fact that different voices work well on different things.  I’m not sure how well Tarja’s beautiful soprano voice would work on some of the songs from Imaginarum for instance whereas your voice worked for them.

Yes and my voice wouldn’t suit those first songs from “Angels fall first”, and I had some difficulty singing those songs.  I think what the boys did when they changed Tarja for a new singer, they wanted something new, a new sound, but at the same time maybe if they had chosen someone similar maybe it would have been easier for everyone in a way, but since the guys wanted a new style, that was the choice and the fans should maybe tried to have accept it a bit more, and many of them did of course, but it was hard for us all in many ways.

With any band breakup there are bad memories but also hopefully good ones too.  What is one of your best memories from your time with Nightwish?

I think it was when we won a big award in Germany called the Echo award which is like a Grammy.  The evening was just fantastic, I was there on the same stage with celebrities like Kylie Minogue and Foo Fighters, and we actually won the prize over Within Temptation and Foo Fighters which was just amazing, I couldn’t believe it, so that was a really nice evening, just to be a part of that big occasion, and Germany’s such a huge country you know so it was just wonderful, so I think that is one of the best memories I have.

Do you have any plans to join another band?

Not at the moment no. I don’t say I will never be in a band again.  My old band that I was in before Nightwish, Alyson Avenue, we will probably do a reunion at some point because we have such a good friendship still and we share a studio where I do music with my own keyboard player, but at the moment I’m trying to focus on my solo stuff to get it started.  Of course if there were to be a nice band where I feel that my heart is in the music and where I can do songs, be a songwriter then maybe, but I don’t think I’d be just a singer in a band again and not songwriting because now I feel that I like this songwriting thing.  Maybe I will start my own band at some point, who knows.

First though as you say there’s the solo album to concentrate on.  Thank you very much for your time.

Thank you so much.

Anette Olzon’s solo album, Shine will be released on 31st March 2014 via earMUSIC.

For those who don’t pick their fruit from the tree of symphonic rock, the first question will likely be ‘who?’, aficionados will be well aware that Ms Olzon is the revered ex-vocalist of Finnish symphonic rockers Nightwish.  Now, before those who think the genre somewhat overblown and becoming increasingly moribund switch off, read on – because Shine is, in fact, a rather delightful surprise.

Because while Anette’s symphonic roots are never too far below the surface, she’s taken the genre, captured its essence and then and turned it completely on its head delivering what she describes as a ‘pop rock’ or ‘pop metal’ album.

Pop rock is probably the more apt description because although there’s metal undertones it’s a velvet gloved delivery – the power coming from the subtle use of keyboards, strings and percussion rather than guitars turned up to 11.  And the title track is the perfect example – as weighty and hard hitting as John Grant, but with one of the tastiest hooks you’ll hear this year.

And that’s not by chance when you look at the collaborators who’ve contributed to Shine – some of the most successful rock and pop teams in Scandinavia – Anders Bagge, jury member of Sweden’s Idols (and producer of luminaries like Madonna, Cíéline Dion and Jennifer Lopez) and his songwriter team of Stefan í–rn (songwriter and producer of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest winning track Running Scared) and Johan Glí¶ssner.  That’s not to say the album isn’t Olzon’s own work, but she’s been astute enough to bring on board those with the skills to polish her ideas into a set of shimmering gems.

The result is one of the best pop/rock albums you’ll hear this year – one that that has the playfulness of early Kate Bush, the pop sensibilities of Music-era Madonna, and even a vague whiff of Magenta.  And, of course, subtle symphonic undertones.

But the centre piece is the Swede’s gossamer-like vocals floated on some sparkling arrangements on a set that Nightwish fans may see that as some sort of ‘sell out’.  But in truth it’s a triumph and an album that, that with a little exposure could easily see Anette Olzon usurp her former colleagues’ pop-ularity.

It’s nice to hear someone take a chance with something just a little bit different.  And to pull it off with such aplomb.  A sure contender for album of the year.  *****

ANETTE OLZON
Text Janne Mattsson, Photo Patric Ullaeus/Revolver

One day she was in the middle of a successful USA tour. The next, Anette Olzon was sitting in a plane going home to Sweden, thrown out and replaced by another singer. One and a half years after the break with Nightwish, it's time for a solo career.
"It was important to have is i magen. At the same time, I was afraid people would forget about me."

You have stayed out of the spotlight since you and Nightwish went separate ways in the autumn of 2012. Why?

"I needed a timeout" says Anette Olzon. Mine and Nightwish's divorce was pretty hard, something that I was very sad about. I also had a child during that same time, so it wasn't really that strange that I took a little paus."

It isn't so that Nightwish in any way have prevented you from speaking to the press by for example a contract?

"No, absolutely not. I wouldn't sign such a contract. They probably would have wanted me to, but I didn't. But I didn't want to do a bunch of interviews with me just telling about how hard it has been. In an early stage, I felt that it is better to wait with meeting the press until I had finished the album. In that way I can now talk about both parts, both the good and the bad."

What was it that happened with the latest Nightwish DVD "Showtime, Storytime" (2013)? Why did you forbid them from including you in it?

"I didn't think there was any reason for them to have me in it, when they had anyway replaced me with another singer. It just felt pretty silly actually. Also during last year I have gotten so damn much crap from some fans of the band, that I am so much worse than Tarja (Turunen). The same fans have had this "Anette vs Tarja" thing during all these years. Then it would just be an even bigger thing with this DVD: "Here's Anette and now there's Floor Jansen instead". I know that Floor is very loved by the metal fans and I am not stupid. The way we parted ways was also a reason I wasn't so very positive towards the guys in the band. Sure, the said I would get to watch the documentary before, and approve the whole thing, but I didn't really trust them. I was thinking of how they got rid of Tarja. In retrospect it resulted in the pretty ugly documentary "A day before tomorrow" (2006). I did not want that to happen to me. I understand that fans who appreciate my time in the band maybe are disappointed, but on youtube there are many good videos from my time in the band."

When I interviewed keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen in SRM issue 10/2013 he said something different, that you are not enemies and still on good terms.

"Yeah, of course you could say that, and surely it sounds much better than to say that maybe you have behaved a bit badly towards a band member. But that's not true, that is just something that he has made up. The truth is none other than that I was replaced before I had even had time to leave the tour and I haven't spoken to any of them since the day I flew home from USA (Anette's last gig with Nightwish was in Salt Lake City 29th of September 2012). We haven't even made a proper end or said goodbye to each other. All contact has been between our lawyers. I understand why he says that. I had probably done the same in his position, because it doesn't look good when you can't keep your female singers. During my years in the band I did my best to try to get them to communicate and solve conflicts. But their solution is to remove the problems instead of trying to solve them. In the end it was four against one. I wish we could sit down and make an end, sort out what happened and ask forgiveness from each other. I have probably things to ask forgiveness for as well. That it turned out like this... We were after all really good friends once."

What may the problems have been caused by?

"Partly I think it's because we are from two different countries. The cultural differences and language barriers are greater than you could think, which makes the whole thing very difficult. They know very much Swedish, but they absolutely don't want to speak Swedish which means that it's mainly English that's the language. Irony is one thing that can easily be mis interpretated in English, which canmean that things don't flow as easy as they should. Also I think they were a bit traumatized by the thing with Tarja. They were probably a bit insecure of what I would be like and if I would become like Tarja. I on the other hand was very insecure of if I also would get fired. That I was afraid of during all the years. Then when I got my own manager I guess they probably absolutely thought it would be the same thing like with Tarja - which it didn't. But a lot has absolutely been about the communication. Swedish as I am at first I tried to have meetings with them every week but I was the only one talking. With time, it also became clear that I was a little bit older and had children to think about. Some shows I think we shouldn't have done, when we lost instead of earned money from them. Such a big band shouldn't have to lose money. But they thought those gigs could be fun to do, in that they already had really much money in a buffer since before that they could live from. Something I didn't have, I, who basically am just a common worker while Nightwish is a big company. So sure, we had many discussions about money also. If I had entered their company in Finland, maybe it would have been different, but I didn't. Musically however, we didn't have any problems. There the cooperation worked incredibly well."

What will you take with you from the time in Nightwish?

"I got myself very much scene routine by doing such big shows. We did after all play in front of both 60 000 and 70 000 people. Such things undoubtedly give you stage routine. Then, of course also how the music business looks like today - both the positive and the negative. It has made me both tougher and given me more skinn pí¥ ní¤san."

Your debut album "Shine" is neither melodic AOR like Alyson Avenue, which you left 2007, nor bombastic metal like Nightwish, but a lot more muted and cozy. Is this more you?

"I actually think so. I tried to sit down and write speedy songs for "Shine" but I couldn't do it. How I tried, I didn't get it right. Now during the summer I tried to make more metal-ish songs together with Martijn Spierenburg (keyboard, Within Temptation) and Fredrik Berg (keyboard, Bloodbound, Street Talk). I hummed some melodies into Garageband which I then sent to Fredrik, who worked further with them. I also asked them to send ideas to me, so we were passing ideas between each other over the internet. But in the end that material didn't feel as right as the material I already had. Therefore I kept the songs that Stefan, Johan and I wrote already in 2009. But the song "One Million Faces" actually turned out so great that it is on the album anyway."

Who are Stefan and Johan?

"In 2009 I and my manager contacted Anders Bagge. I thought he seemed like a symphatic person, and I have heard he wrote a lot of good music. Stefan í–rn and Johan Glí¶ssner are in his songwriter team. It turned out that we three played and wrote the songs together during a couple of intense weeks. Together we ended up with this softer side that I show on this album. We found a comfortable range that sounded very good and decided to stay there. In Nightwish Tuomas wanted all the time for me to sing in a very high vocal range. In the studio that was never a problem, but live it was incredibly demanding. To sing for 90 minutes was as demanding as a class of physical training. If I was even just a little bit sick, it affected the vocals immediately. That's not how I want it on my album. These songs I'll do justice and perform without problem, even if I have a bit of a cold."

"When I started to plan for a solo album in 2009 it was also very sensitive from the label and the band's point of view whether it would sound too much like Nightwish. The risk existed then that the album would in any way compete witv Nightwish. It could absolutely not be that way. Therefore the music early on took this direction. The idea was that I shoukd be able to sit and sing these songs for example underneath a crystal chandelier in a lounge, more simple and intimate so to say. But now that I'm no longer part of the band, and on my own, it doesn't matter if I compete with them. Therefore there are a little bit more guitars on the album than was intended at first."

During your break, you must have been approached with many offers from other bands and projects?

"Yes, actually I have, and I am very proud. But because I have been in the middle of making a record deal, something that took its time, I couldn't just say yes to anything. It can have been for example requests from competing record companies. There was one thing that I really wanted to do, but when the request came, it wasn't possible. But I hope it will happen in the future. Then there have been a lot of suggestions for things I absolutely didn't want to do. Because I have all the time known that "Shine" would be released, it was important to have is i magen. At the same time I was afraid people would maybe forget me. But judging by the positive reactions to the song "Falling" that the record company early on released on iTunes, things seem to be going well."

If Brother Firetribe were to contact you and ask you to do guest vocals again, how would you react? Considering the guitar player of Nightwish is also in that band.

"I can say like this, even if there were four against one maybe that doesn't have to mean that all four thought the same thing. But sometimes it can be so that you have to look out for yourself and your own being and surviving in the band. Emppu was my very best friend in the band and I have all the time said that I want to talk about things, not pretend like it's raining. I don't hold grudges, everyone should know that. I have moved on and if they contact me, we'll see what happens."

The much anticipated debut solo album from Anette Olzon is finally here. Of course Anette was previously the lead singer for a little band called Nightwish for two albums and prior to that she fronted the AOR band Alyson Avenue. She started working on this solo album while she was a member of Nightwish, so it has been several years in the making. Not knowing what to expect, I was quite excited when this album came my way  having been a fan of her work with Nightwish and Alyson Avenue. Would she continue the musical path set forth by Nightwish or revisit her AOR roots ala Alyson Avenue? The answer is neither. On her debut album “Shine”, Anette Olzon presents a more organic, earthy musical direction.

“Like a Show Inside My Head” is first on the agenda and has a classical, symphonic vibe. Next up is the poppish “Shine” which is followed by the haunting “Floating”. The album picks up the pace and tempo for the track “Lies”. Other highlights include: “Invincible”, “Hear Me” and “Watching Me From Afar” to name a few.

I wouldn’t really call “Shine” a metal record but it does have energy and passion, it’s just focused in a different direction. Say what you want about Anette Olzon (and people will), but you have to give her credit for doing something different from what fans may expect, and still making it good and a worthwhile listen. And besides that, she’s got a killer voice and that is absolutely reinforced on “Shine”.

Rating – 88/100

"I am so thrilled to finally release my first solo album,” says Anette Olzon. “I’ve been working on it for a long time by now... The album is very personal with songs I have started writing already in 2009 but also very recent songs. The overall message of the album is that life can be really dark and filled with hardship and sadness, but you can always choose to see some light coming through, to make you stronger and full of life - making you SHINE... no matter what."

And what about the musical direction? “In the end, it is a rock album,” says Anette. “Well, a pop rock album maybe, or would you call it pop metal?” We have heard this one before, didn’t we?

Whether we can define Shine a metal album, rock, pop or “pop rock” what would be hard to miss is how strong the songs are and what an extraordinary album it is. It exceptionally masters the borders between melancholy and hope, between fragility and power, because it showcases an artist who doesn't rest on her laurels but heads boldly into the future. Because it shines.

The end of March 2014 will finally see the release of Anette Olzon's long-awaited debut solo record, 'Shine'. A pleasingly diverse blend of pop, rock, metal, classical and folk, it contains ten melodically sublime compositions with a heartfelt, emotionally-charged vocal performance that finally allows the Swedish singer to showcase the full range and strength of her voice. So a year and a half after her untimely exit from Nightwish, it seems she is indeed all set to shine in her new career as a solo artist. Ahead of the album's release, Metal Discovery spent a most pleasant twenty minutes on the phone with Anette as she chatted away candidly and effervescently about the record and her fresh start...

METAL DISCOVERY: Fine, thanks. How you doing?
ANETTE: Hi, how are you?

ANETTE: Fine, thank you.

MD: How’s your day going now? I read about your pram troubles earlier in your blog.

ANETTE: Yeah, I’ve had a shitty day. You know when it just starts in a bad way, and I started in a really bad mood, but now I’m better… [laughs]

MD: Heeey! It’s the start of the week so it can only get better from now on.

ANETTE: Yeah, and I mean, Mondays are like that but I was so into going out, and I had all the kids with me and everything, and then the pram doesn’t work, and you’re like, “what the hell?” But I think it was some dirt in the wheel so it was stuck. It will work tomorrow! [laughs]

MD: I’ve been blown away by your new album, ‘Shine’… it really does shine in so many different ways!

ANETTE: Thank you!

MD: I gather all the songs, apart from one, were written back in 2009 when you had some downtime from Nightwish?

ANETTE: Exactly, exactly, in-between tours.

MD: So how good does it feel to actually get the album out there now after so many years of waiting?

ANETTE: It’s wonderful and, in a way, you’ve heard the songs for so many years so you’re like, “aha, here we go”… but, at the same time, when we mixed them, we did some new stuff to them and, of course, I did the backing vocals and some new elements, so they are like fresh new songs. And I was quite frustrated when I couldn’t get them out before because the plan was for 2010, so it was a bit of a delay. But still, you know, I think it was for a good reason. They were meant to come out now, I guess… [laughs]

MD: Yeah, and obviously worth waiting for as well!

ANETTE: Yeah!

MD: It’s quite a diverse album as well with all the different instrumentations because you’ve got elements of metal, rock, pop, classical and even a bit of folk in there. Obviously at the centre of all that are some very powerful songs so rather than set out to make a genre record, was genre secondary? Like, did you start out with the songs and then flavour them with all the different styles?

ANETTE: Yeah. And, I mean, when we did the songs, as I said, in 2009 I was still in Nightwish so the main thing was that I couldn’t compete with my own band. That was the first thing I said to the boys, when I sat down with my songwriters. So we did ‘Falling’ and that was a bit in the same feeling as Nightwish and rock, of course. So then I felt, no, this is too rocky so we have to change it. And then we started doing ‘Floating’ and stuff, so it came out to be something totally different. Then, of course, when things changed and I wasn’t in the band anymore, we had some more freedom to put some more strings and element into it, and guitars. Because I think if I had released it in 2010, it would have been less guitars; I’m quite sure. And, also, I was signed to a rockier label – you have to attract some of those fans too. And I think it’s good because you have to keep your fans and show them that you still do the same kind of style in a way. I mean, not the same style but that you’re still there. But, then, if you want to do a little bit in the other direction, you can maybe do it on the second or third album. We’ll see where I evolve from this one... [laughs]

MD: In terms of the lyrics it strikes me as a very personal album, so did you have any apprehensions about making yourself so emotionally bare in the songs?

ANETTE: I think it just came naturally. I’ve done some lyrics and stuff when I was younger, at the age of 20 in my former band, and then I was writing a lot of melancholic stuff. I always tend to write better when I’m in a sadder mood - I don’t know why, we are all different. So that album, I was quite tired after the long tour and all these things that have happened, and being in a big band, and doing all those new things. I think I just had to get everything out. And then it started to be personal, of course, even if not every single word is personal but, of course, it’s from my life. And I think it was good; it’s some kind of healing process too when you write down the things you have inside, even if it’s from your childhood or whatever. And I think the next album might be more positive, you never know. It depends on how you are but, at that time, I was quite exhausted and tired from the whole touring of ‘Dark Passion Play’, which was a huge tour. So maybe that’s why they were a bit more melancholic, in a way… [laughs]

MD: You mentioned healing through writing so was it a cathartic experience when capturing some of those personal experiences and emotions in your music?

ANETTE: Yeah, I think so. And I think, you know, I’m also that kind of person. I’m very open and talkative with people and you can easily get to know me, but I have a big integrity when it comes to how I feel deep inside… I’m quite a positive person when you meet me because I don’t want to sit down and moan about negative stuff. I only show that side to the very closest people around me so, of course, I need to get it out in something. And I think the lyrics and writing it down is really good because, even if it’s personal, I’m not talking to you about it directly; I can write it in the lyrics. And people can interpret them as they want. I think it’s a good way; it’s like writing a book, in a way, to get it out of your system.

MD: I guess like any kind of art form, like painting, music or writing a book, like you say, it’s all about expressing your emotions in different ways. So art is a good medium for doing that.

ANETTE: Yeah, it is.

MD: Obviously, you made two incredible albums with Nigtwish although your vocals throughout this one are even more heartfelt and intense with a lot more emotional depth. So did that come quite naturally through singing about such personal subjects?

ANETTE: Yeah, I think it did and it is easier to implement singing and your emotions in your own songs, I guess. It feels like that. I mean, I have been singing other people’s music mostly, and it was something different when you got in and sang these songs because, of course, if you write about something personal, like some family or something, of course it’s something that will reach down to your heart and it will be easier to express that. I think it was mainly because it was my own songs coming out.

MD: You get to showcase the full range of your voice too, on the album. I think ‘Lies’ is a good example of that because you have the low-end of your voice on the verse, and the high-end in the chorus. So did you feel you had a lot more creative freedom where your voice could really flourish on this album, more so than singing in Nightwish?

ANETTE: Yeah, I mean, because here, we started from my voice. It was the first thing we did, like, sit down, I sang and they played around it. And then, also, Johan and Stefan who I wrote the songs with, are really good because they could hear where I sounded the best. It’s sometimes good to have someone else listening and they were like, “hmmm, I think this should be higher here.” And then, of course, when I went in to do the songs with all the emotions, like ‘Lies’ for instance, those lead vocals are the demo vocals. Almost all of the songs are lead vocals from the demo recording where we just went in, I did it, and it was like, “boom”. And I think that was also why it was so emotional because it was the first time I went in and sang those songs. I know Cíéline Dion said once, I don’t know if she still does that, but when she was going to record something she didn’t want to sing them too many times because she wanted to have the fresh feeling. And I think it’s the same with me because, with Nightwish, the ‘Imaginaerum’ album, when we came to record the demo, that was the first time I sang them and they sounded so good, you know, with the voice and everything, both me and Marco. And then when we went to do the actual album some months later, Tuomas was like, “it doesn’t sound the same, it’s not as good as it was.” And that’s the thing, I think, because sometimes when you go in and sing something that needs to be emotional, you are the best when you do it the first time. You start to struggle with it, you know, thirty times, take after take after take… that emotional thing will just go away. So, I think, mainly because it was also very few takes and, of course, as you say, we can put the songs where I feel the best; where it suits me.

MD: Yeah, definitely. Also with ‘Lies’, since the video’s been released, I’ve read some comments online where people seem to think it’s about your exit from Nightwish. Did you kind of anticipate that misinterpretation?

ANETTE: Yeah and I mean, first of all, I didn’t think this was going to be the first single; it was the record label who chose it. I thought it was going to be ‘Shine’, actually. So when I was thinking about the video and the single, I thought about ‘Shine’ and then I had to implement it on ‘Lies’. But, of course, in a way, I can see that it’s also… but, I don’t know… for me, personally, the lyrics could be about that, but I know it’s all about my own divorce and the feelings you have. But, of course, what I can say is that it doesn’t matter what kind of relationship is ending, it can be the same feelings, you know. And what we had is just lost, and what we said were only lies because we couldn’t keep them. We said we were gonna be married until we died and, you know, that’s what I mean, in a way, with the lies. And, of course, another relationship where you say, “we’re always gonna be in a band together, we’re gonna be friends”, and then you’re not. So, I mean, you could implement them in that way too and any relationship, of course, that happens in life where you go separate ways.

MD: Exactly, and I’ve heard so many artists compare divorcing a band to divorcing a spouse so I guess it’s naturally related anyway, although one of those divorces is a lot more public than the other one.

ANETTE: Yeah and, I mean, in a band it is like a family because you live in a bus, you get to see all the good and bad sides from each other, and that’s only family. I mean, that’s what I said before, only my closest family and friends will know how I am when I’m myself. When I’m out there, I’m not the same person in a way because you don’t show your worst side, but in a band you do – they will see you in the morning, they will see you in the evening, they will see you when you’re ill, they will see you when you’re tired, when you’re drunk. So, in a way, when you then end that thing, you have been so personal with the people that it is like a big family, and it is like a divorce in that way.

MD: I guess so. And ‘Lies’ is such an upbeat and positive sounding song so I presume the main message is nothing to do with self-pity; it’s more about optimism and becoming emotionally stronger from a bad experience?

ANETTE: Yeah, and always in a divorce, even if it’s one person who finally says, “enough now, I don’t want to do this anymore”, normally it’s two people, if there’s no cheating and stuff, who can see the marriage is not going in the direction you want to. But then it can be one person who takes the step and the other one can be a bit more like, “oh, he or she left me”, but it’s still two people who couldn’t make it happen. It’s the same with a band; it was like a group of people who couldn’t make it happen but someone took the decision and said, “enough now”. So, I mean, it’s a positive thing because then you have to move on, for sure, but I think it’s good to get it out of your system… [laughs]… either way… [laughs]

MD: Definitely! I guess with the album as a whole, as well, the central theme is a statement of optimisim and emotional resilience, which is, I presume, why you chose the track ‘Shine’ for the album title? Despite some melancholy, as you previously said, the album does strike me as having a very optimistic outlook as a whole.

ANETTE: Yeah, I mean, there are also some love songs on it so it’s not all about just gloom. So there are some love songs and ‘Shine’ is about keeping strong when things do hit you in the face, or if people are mean, like if you’re bullied at school… and since I have been bullied at school, it was kind of a song about that. Even if things go against you and you have harder times, which we all have in many ways and people will treat you badly, then you just can say, “screw it, I will make my own way, and my own path, and I’ll shine.” So that’s the message, you know, just shine, show who you are; don’t care about what other people think, just be you. It’s a very strong song for me… [laughs]

MD: Ooo yeah, well, it’s a very strong album, and it’s a very good message as well!

ANETTE: Yeah, good! [laughs]

METAL DISCOVERY: Despite the hard time you must’ve had emotionally when parting company with Nightwish, is it now a very exciting time for you to be making this fresh start, and completely on your own terms as well?

ANETTE: Yeah, of course, and I think it’s important that you go out from something that has been a bit harder to try and look ahead, and I did that quite fast. I was focussed and I wanted to do this album and get it out, and I think it went quite fast too. So I think it’s a good way to have this out now, one year later or one and a half or something. Of course, I’m also a bit nervous how it will go because I’m a new, fresh artist; I don’t have a band behind me; I don’t have big management and stuff in that way, that brings you up on the bigger scene. So I have to start from the beginning now and, of course, it’s a bit nervous too but I hope for the best… [laughs] and I did that quite fast. I was focussed and I wanted to do this album and get it out...Of course, I’m also a bit nervous how it will go because I’m a new, fresh artist..."

MD: So exciting but also a little bit scary… [laughs]

ANETTE: Yeah, of course, because you have to stand on your own two feet now. There’s not a band behind me, it’s only me now! [laughs]

MD: I think the album has got mass appeal because it crosses a few different genres and so forth, but it seems to me that once an artist or band has been so heavily associated within a particular genre - in this case, the metal genre – however they progress and diversify their music, it seems difficult for them to reach fans beyond that genre…

ANETTE: Yeah.

MD: So do you worry that your Nightwish association might prove a bit restrictive in being able to reach out to a more pop-oriented audience, for example?

ANETTE: Yeah, I mean, of course I think about that since my music is very different. And, in a way, especially in my home country where Nightwish isn’t that big, and where metal is really metal and, you know, we are a pop country, I would really like to sell some more albums in my home country. I think that would be really nice but it’s really hard and it hasn’t been so many interviews yet, and then it’s been only the rock magazines, so we’ll see. But maybe if they hear the music, hopefully… it’s all about the PR too.

MD: Yeah, exactly. It can just take a lucky break sometimes to get a bit of airplay on a particular radio station and then it can snowball from there, so hopefully you can reach out to that kind of crowd.

ANETTE: Exactly.

MD: One of the people you worked with on the album was Stefan í–rn who wrote and produced Sweden’s 2011 winning entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, of course, so I have to ask you – if the opportunity ever came up for you to represent your country in the contest, would you ever want to do that?

ANETTE: Yeah. I mean, actually, I did send a song this year and I didn’t get in, but… [laughs]… that’s how it goes! I think I would really like to do that. This year, however, here in Sweden, the contest has been not so good – quite bad songs and the whole show has been with a lot of negativity. So maybe now is not the best time to be in that competition! [laughs]

MD: Exactly, yeah! Maybe next year.

ANETTE: Yeah, maybe next year or when there’s a better feeling about it. But of course I would compete for Sweden; you always want to do that for your country… [laughs]… I think it’s good exposure, especially if you want to be seen in your home country, because they get a lot of focus in the media and stuff. It depends if you want to be only selling albums abroad or so on, and you don’t care about your home country, but if you want to be famous in your home country you need to do that; here in Sweden, for sure… [laughs]

MD: That’s the one, yeah! Are there any plans to tour with the record yet?

ANETTE: Yeah, we found a really nice booking agent here, one week ago, and I think he’s working on it so, hopefully, I would like to go out and play quite soon. But it’s in his hands now… [laughs] Hopefully… I would like to come to the UK so you’ll have to tell people to book me! [laughs]

MD: Oh absolutely, that’d be marvellous. I’ll spread the word around some of the promoters!

 ANETTE: For sure, do so!

MD: Obviously the album’s only 38 minutes long so, when you do get out on the road, do you have any other new songs in reserve?

ANETTE: Yeah, I’m doing new songs. If there’s a need to do some covers I will do it but, otherwise, I do have some songs I’ve done with other bands too. I’m writing new songs for the main purpose that I do have some. I do need some more songs on the set, for sure.

MD: Otherwise it’ll be a very short gig!

ANETTE: Yeah, well, you can always talk a lot! [laughs]

MD: Yeah, exactly! You do seem to be good at talking!

ANETTE: But, actually, I did more songs for this album that didn’t come through because, the thing is, I had fifteen or sixteen songs but then, of course, they say that you shouldn’t have too many songs for an album. They say ten is quite enough, so it wasn’t my choice. I do have more songs that didn’t fit into it and I’ve actually done one new song already, this last week, and I have something more in my head, so there will be more songs. And it’s a good thing to try them out, you know, in a live show before you go and record your next album, because we’ll know which songs work…

MD: Yeah, and which bits of songs work as well…

ANETTE: Exactly. So, yeah, there will be more songs, for sure.

MD: Would you ever want to revisit Nightwish songs in your live solo sets, or is that something you want to leave completely in the past?

ANETTE: To be honest, I wouldn’t mind doing it because I like the songs and I’m proud of the songs that we’ve done. I mean, there are many songs I would love to do. But I know, also, that Tuomas, I don’t know whether he’d like me to do it, and that out of respect to the songwriter, I don’t want to disrespect him by taking his songs and doing them while they still play with the band. I mean, they’re going on tour and I’m sure Floor will sing a lot of songs that I’ve done and it wouldn’t be fair to compete in that way. So it’s not that I wouldn’t do it because I don’t like them anymore, it’s a bit of respect for him too. We’ll see. Maybe one day we’ll meet and he’ll say, “hey, do some songs from Nightwish”… “okay, I will do it”. But, for now, I’m not gonna do it in the first thing.

MD: You have enough powerful songs of your own, anyway!

ANETTE: Yeah, that’s what I mean and, I think, Nightwish is continuing their path with those songs and I think it’s better this way. They will do them live and I will do my stuff.

MD: The final thing I wanted to ask – as you seem to be such an optimistic person, what makes you shine in life most of all?

ANETTE: Oh, my children. Simple answer. My children, yeah, they make me shine, they do… [laughs]

MD: And have you baked some cookies yet? I also read earlier that you were going to bake some to make them smile?

ANETTE: Yeah, we did cookies. We made heart cookies. I’ll put them on the blog later. It was like a stamp. You make some butter cakes and then put a stamp on there with hearts. But then, when we baked them, you can’t see the heart as well, like not so good as I thought, but I will try to do them again. But they looked good and they were really yummy!

MD: Awww. Did it bring smiles to their faces?

ANETTE: Yes, they’re eating them and they’re like, “can we have more?!” It’s a good thing I don’t eat any cookies because I would be too big then, but my kids love cookies! [laughs]

MD: Marvellous! Right, thank you so much for your time, it’s been a real pleasure speaking with you.

ANETTE: Thank you so much and have a really nice evening. And hopefully I’ll see you in the UK then… if you get me there! [laughs]

MD: Definitely, I’ll spread the word! And best of luck with the album when it comes out everywhere. I hope it sells really well for you because it’s absolutely fantastic.

ANETTE: Thank you so much. It’s really nice to hear that. Thank you. And maybe I’ll talk to you again then.

MD: Definitely. Cheers then, bye!

ANETTE: Bye!

I would like to start by talking about your solo career. How did you have the idea of working with other persons to write your new songs ? How was the writing process in general ?
In 2009, during a pause after the tour with Nightwish, I thought that I needed someone to help me, so I decided to contact a professionnal composer. I heard of a guy that was part of the Swedish Idol jury. He contacted me, he liked me, we finished several songs with his team and the album was out. (not sure of the end of this sentence^^) For the composition process, very often I have a melody in mind, and the guys start to play above, the piano for example, and that's the way we compose the music, around my melody. At other times, we find a beautiful harmonic (?) with the piano and I start singing. I take care of the melody and the lyrics, and the guys of the music. It's an optimal team.

The album sounds like a mix of musical influences very diverse, from Blackmore's night's folk rock to pop music. What are the bands and the genders of music that inspire you the most ?
Oh, I listen to several different things. For example Sting, Peter Gabriel, Cíéline Dion and lots of others. I do so since I was a child, and this helped me a lot when I was young when starting singing in cover bands, and even afterwards. I think that all the music influences defines the career of an artist.

There is a verse in "Lies" that says “ Threads of life going by / Precious moments run by / Tossing and turning our mind / All the magic is gone”. What is that song about ?
This song deals with the moment you separate from someone or something. Like in a divorse or at the end of a relashionship. It's difficult to explain it exactly, but I think it deals with how you feel when you leave something beautiful, that you thought was going on well. Suddenly things change, people change, you change, and the relationship changes. It's the end of something you thought would last forever.

Is there a song you like the most on the album ? And if yes, why ?
I like them all ! It's difficult to choose one, also because lots of time is spent, so maybe in the beggining I had a favourite song, and then another. MMM, which one can I choose... I love "Moving away", I feel it very close to me, because I wrote it when my mum confessed me she had the cancer. "Moving away" is a very special song, it has a very touching theme.

How do you suceed in being a three children mum and a full time singer in the same time ? What does this type of career involve when it opposes to your private life ?
Lately, it goes on really well, I had the time to listen to CDs, write songs and take care of my children, since I had no tour planned. In myjob, it works by periods, for example for a year you're far away touring, and the next one you're home to record your album. Then, for example, when I was in Nightwish I dedicated myself only to Nightwish, I couldn't do otherwise. It was not possible to be a full time mum. You need to understand and accept what you can do. About my private life, for sure when I started with Nightwish there were lots of implications. I felt like I needed to be very careful, whereas now I feel more free, I don't feel so scared anymore. It's very important for a public person to maintain a certain private life.

Critics are very important elements in music industry today. With the arrival of social networks, and then their influence increasing exponientielly, and the artists have to deal with it everyday. You have been criticized recently, how did you react ? Did you feel hurt or did you think it was part of the game ?
When I started to be a bit more famous, I found it difficult enough to face this kind of things. I received critics and jugements regarding my look and my voice, and yes it did hurt me. Now years have passed, and I can say it doesn't interrest me anymore. I use a lot Facebook, Instagram... On one hand they are usefull, and entertaining, but they can be destructive. I think you shouldn't dedicate too much time to it.

Let's make a little jump in 2007. When you joined Nightwish, I think it has been difficult for you to take Tarja's place in the heart of the fans. Do you feel freed from this weight now that you leaved the band ?
Yes, of course. It was very difficult in the beginning, when I arrived in Nightwish, because comparisons are unavoidable, and specially because that was the first time I was at that level of the music world, so the critics were continuous. Today it doesn't interrest me anymore, because I know who is Tarja, both of us have now new projects, and in the past we spent a beautiful period in Nightwish.

What do you miss the most from that period, and what do you think you've learnt now that you started a solo career ?
When I started in Nightwish it was all new, it was a pretty stressful period, but very beautiful and we had a lot of fun. The first two years have been very challenging, we were always touring, always travelling, I was never at home, but we had a lot of fun, we sold a lot of albums. What I miss the most are the big shows, having fun with them on stage, seeing the world. About my solo career... well... my first solo album is out !

You started writing the songs of your first solo album when you were still in the band. Was that difficult to work on your songs when you were touring ?
No because in fact we had a long pause after the tour. I knew there was going to be a lot of time between Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum. I wanted to do something, but I couldn't allow myself a second job. It was a calibrated choice, taken at the best moment. In these two years a lot of things happened, like never before in my life. I wanted to do something else, outside of Nightwish, and writing songs looked like the perfect thing to do. I needed to "start my own business", to relax before starting recording the new Nightwish album. It was also a way to feel more secure, writing my own songs, before coming in the studio again, and be abble to say myself "I can do it, I can do my own songs". Suceeding in doing all this stuff by myself, without involving Nightwish, has been a goal.

And now are you going to tour to promote your album ?
Yes, I am just waiting for confirmations for several dates. There is probably going to be a tour for this spring, I don't know if it will only be a little tour of promotion, but there will be a tour. I can't say any precise date for now, but there will also be a second tour in automn, and it will start in Europe.

Thank you su much for the time you spent with us, it was a pleasure. If you want, you can leave a message for your Italian fans.
Of course ! Thank you for the support you gave me all these last years ! I hope I can come to play in Italy very soon... and to see you all ! I hope you'll like my album !

An interview with Anette from Helsingborgs Dagblad. http://hd.se/noje/20...n-pa-egen-hand/

Translation:

In the middle of an ongoing world tour Anette Olzon got fired from the metal band Nightwish. Now she tells about the shock and grief, the way back and the new solo album "Shine".

Anette Olzon "pustar ut" (like, she takes a deep breath and then relaxes, she's had a lot to do, but now has a moment to relax) when we meet up at Dunker's House of Culture. Her one-year old at home have started to get his molars.

"He's making a lot of noice" she says with a smile.

She has more to smile about. Shine has already gotten attention with several reviews on various internet sites. And the reviews are brilliant to say the least. With praise both for strong matrial and her melacholic voice.

Anette Olzon started working on the album over four years ago. She's written the songs together with Johan Glí¶ssner and Stefan í–rn (who co-wrote Azerbaijan's winning song "Running Scared" for Eurovision Song Contest 2011). The trio got in contact via Swedish Idols.

"I was watching the show and thought that Anders Bagge seemed like a nice and sypathetic person. A guy I'd like to work with. My manager arranged a meeting, and apart from Anders I also got to meet Johan and Stefan, and it clicked immediately between us.

The first recordings were made in Anders Bagge's studio on Ekerí¶. They turned out so well that all songs on the cd, except one, have Anette's lead vocals from those demo recordings.

It is a personal record. Some lyrics - like the title track "Shine" - hold a lot of meaning for Anette. It is an anti-bullying song with the message to not let anybody put you down. But to stand up for yourself and shine anyway. Anette herself was bullied at school and had as an adult given lectures on this subject.

Is "Shine" a song where adult Anette sing to young Anette?

"Yes you could say. When you are bullied, like I was for several years, you shrink yourself and believe that there's something wrong with you. I have a son who's 13. He's not bullied, but I see the same mechanisms. That you think you have to fit in to get everyone to like you. But you can't be loved by everybody. Though that is the thing that is so difficult to get young people to understand."

Anette Olzon had as a singer in Alyson Avenue made a couple of records when she in 2007 got the spot in Nightwish to replace Tarja Turunen. Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band. It was founded in 1996 and got it's big breakthough 2004 with the album "Once" which sold more than one million copies in the US alone. With Anette Olzon in the band, Nightwish recorded "Dark Passion Play" which sold in two million copies and led to long tours around the world. Also the follow-up "Imaginaerum" was a great success. But just when everything seemed at its best, came the shocking news. After a show in Salt Lake City, USA, September 29, 2012, the other members sent an email to Anette's manager with an unequivocal message.

"They kicked me out in the middle of the tour", says Anette.

Background for the desicion was discussions about an upcoming Australia Tour. Anette felt that it would interfere with her pregnancy. Nightwish wanted to bring in a subtitute. Anette was hesitant towards that solution. But instead of continuing the discussions the rest of the band made a drastic desicion.

"At first I was really sad. I left my bus and sat down outside on the sidewalk and cried. The others in the band saw me sitting there, but nobody approached me. That touched me the most of all. Because it was so callous."

She was depressed for six months afterwards. As soon as she read something about Nightwish the tears came again.

"My self esteem went far down. Also I'm extra sensitive when I'm pregnant. I can blame some of all the tears on that."

Anette's mother thought her daughter should go and talk someone about what had happened. Anette chose to speak to the media instead.

"I have accepted it now, and that I got to tell, has helped. That it was not me who left, I got fired."

For Anette it was important to show her feeling to the world.

"I am a strong person, but I have the right to be sad. The common thing is that you're not supposed to show any emotion. But I'm not like that. I'm no machine."

She's also grateful for her time in Nightwish.

"I have seen the world. I have gained confidence and strenght. I'll take that with me. What is sad is that we haven't had any real closure. They were after all my friends for years. As it is now, we have been communicating via managers and lawyers."

Recently, Anette has been promoting "Shine". Though in her mind she's already on the way towards the next record. At the same time, she realizes that a tour would be a good next step.

"My booking agency are working on it. Now when I'm my own boss, I have to get a lot done by myself. I have been spoiled. Nightwish was like a big company. I just had to come with my little suitcase and stand by the mic and sing. Now I have to fix a band, equipment and all that."

But when it comes to career versus family there's no doubt.

"I will always sing and record albums. But never that I leave my family and travel around 300 days a year! I love my children. I didn't know I'd have three children, but that's how it turned out to be, and I live for them."

At the same thime, money has to come into the account some way.

"It's hard doing music today. Either you have it as a hobby and another work on the side. Then you may not get so big that you can sell a lot of records and can go on tour. Right now I don't know where I'll land. That depends on how this goes. If it doesn't turn out well, I'll end up dong a regular job. That's how it is for many musicians. I might become a midwife. That was what I had originally planned.

Swedish vocalist ANETTE OLZON is no stranger to controversy. Since her highly publicized and decidedly ugly firing from NIGHTWISH in 2012 - the reasons for which still remain murky - she's been the target of keyboard warrior badmouthing, having exchanged the Anette vs Tarja slugfest (her daily reality from the moment she joined the band) for an Olzon vs Nightwish cage match. At the same time, she's moved on supported by heaps of praise for those that fell in love with her chapters of Nightwish history. A work in progress since 2009, Olzon has finally released her first official solo album entitled Shine. She's fully aware some Nightwish fans and the existing haters are going to crucify her new musical direction, but she's determined not to let them bring her down. Olzon considers Shine a huge victory that has taken her well beyond her beginnings with ALYSON AVENUE and roads travelled with Nightwish.

"The whole production for Shine was great because the guys really know what they're doing," Olzon says of the team she wrote the album with. "They're very talented and they've done songs for artists like Celine Dion. Stefan í–rn and Johan Glí¶ssner wrote the songs with me, and they've done so many things. Stefan has his own band, and he also writes songs for major artists here in Sweden. He's also worked abroad, and was responsible for the winning song at Eurovision a few years ago (from Azerbaijan). And Johan is a studio musician and plays everything from jazz to blues to rock, so he's more from the contemporary blues style rather than rock n' roll. They thought this was a lot of fun, but when I came to them as the metal singer in Nightwish they thought we were going to do a metal album and got really excited. Then I told them it wasn't going to be a metal album and I think they were a bit disappointed at first (laughs)."

Shine is reminiscent of ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN's (ex-THE GATHERING) recent works Drive and Everything Changes, walking both sides of a pop rock line rather than trying to cash in on her Nightwish symphonic metal past.

"We will see now how my fans from before will like it. I think the fans that really like me, and not only because of Nightwish, will be open-minded and appreciative of Shine. The metal fans, you never know, but I'm hoping to attract the pop and rock fans as well. It doesn't sound like Nightwish and I've been very clear about that. People have asked me if I'm going to play Nightwish songs live and the answer has always been no. Some people are still hoping for that (laughs). Hopefully people will like this album, and as long as it sells and I get an audience I'll be able to go out play for them, which would be nice."

First single 'Lies' is a solid start for Olzon in that it has a little bit of everything to offer; guitars, pop elments, and folk-oriented dynamics. On the other hand, 'Falling' is more of a rock song and really isn't a representation of the whole album.

"Nine of the songs were composed in 2009, and I did one song ('One Million Faces') with Fredrik Bergh from BLOODBOUND and Martijn Spierenburg . I haven't written very many songs compared to other artists, but when I write now compared to before I have subjects and concepts. I did a song just a couple of days ago, and it wasn't about Nightwish specifically, but the subject was being in a band and getting a lot of hate from other people."

There's little doubt the events leading up to Olzon getting the boot from Nightwish made her out to be the bad guy, turning any press she does for her Shine into a potential exercise in character assassination. It doesn't help her situation in that the Nightwish camp has been quick to refute many of her recent accusations of backstabbing and mismanagement that have appeared online. Quite frankly, I was prepared to get stonewalled when asking about the debacle. Turns out I was way off the mark.

Rather than dig for the scurvy details and assorted dirt kicked up before and after her firing, the focus is on Olzon getting kicked out mid-tour. It's not a move most bands can afford to make in today's music industry economy. Sure as hell not without a back-up plan. And yet, 48 hours after Olzon was cut loose former After Forever vocalist Floor Jansen had taken over her post on stage, ultimately becoming the band's permanent singer.

"It's hard for me to say why the firing happened when it did because I don't really know what happened behind my back," says Olzon. "I think there were some things happening that I didn't know about. It has become clearer to me now that they had some sort of a plan when I told them I was pregnant. I actually think they had some suspicions I was pregnant during the summer festivals, so I think they may have had a back-up plan."

Olzon pegs the band's reaction to her pregnancy as the primary reason for the falling out.

"We had some discussions during the tour in America about how to cover the remaining gigs for the tours that were coming up, and we did have something of an argument before that. I didn't want to have a substitute singer in the band, I wanted to do the South American shows. I would have been too pregnant to go to Australia so I wanted to push the dates back, but Tuomas (Holopainen / keyboards, founder) didn't want that. Discussions about a substitute came up and at first I was like 'Yeah, well.... okay...' but when they mentioned Floor it was an automatic 'No' from me. I didn't think it was a good idea because I knew what would happen; I knew the fans would love Floor because she's a metal singer and I'm a pop singer, and I wanted to keep my job. Because I couldn't do the Australian tour, I think that's when they started thinking about a new singer. We had a bit of an argument, then I got ill, and after that.... I don't know if they planned this."

"They say it wasn't like that but if I wasn't pregnant I don't think this situation would have happened. Of course we had some problems before with different opinions about how touring should be, how many gigs in a row, the places where we played. We didn't fight because of that, though. If I didn't want to go somewhere and they did, we went because the majority decided. I had my 3-year-old son with me, so we did try to solve the touring problem. I can't say it was definitely like that because they say it isn't, but for me that was the problem."

"If I would have been Tarja, I wouldn't have been nervous about having Floor step in as a substitute because I know the fans would wait for me. They would have been saying 'We want Tarja back.' But, I'm Anette and I've received a lot of hatred against my voice and my persona since I joined Nightwish. I remember thinking that if I agreed to Floor coming in to substitute I would end up thinking 'This whole thing again?' when I came back. I could see what would happen."

"Of course I knew we had our gigs to do, and I was pregnant so it was my own fault, but it was only one small tour that I wanted to push back. I could have done all the other gigs and I didn't understand why they needed a substitute singer when I wanted to go. Maybe they felt that they wanted to have another singer. I think that's what they wanted, but they weren't quite honest about it. I guess when I said no they got frustrated. Maybe when I got ill they saw a way out. Of course, then I got angry when they did what they did and wrote something in my blog. They got pissed off at me, I was pissed at them, and it led to where we are now, I guess."

During a recent interview with Holopainen, he revealed that in spite of the bad blood between Nightwish and Olzon there was every intention of including her in the band's recently released Showtime, Storytime documentary. The production was 80% complete when Nightwish were ultimately forced to take all interview and live footage featuring Olzon off the DVD at the insistence of Olzon and her management. Asked to explain her reasons for the move, it's the only time during the discussion where she truly sounds bitter.

"First of all, I didn't think they would do the documentary because... what kind of documentary could it be?" she asks. "I could just see they could do something like what they did with Tarja to make it look like I was the evil person, because that's what they've done before. I was really suspicious about the whole thing, and of course I was really angry because they fired me in a really bad way and I wasn't happy about the situation. I didn't want to be looked at in a weird way on a DVD, and I didn't want to be compared with Floor."

Regardless of the bad taste left in her mouth, Olzon admits the Nightwish experience was a valuable one with long-reaching positive effects on her approach to music and life in general.

"I've changed since I joined the band. My mother says I'm quite a different person. When I joined Nightwish I was still that young girl with a dream of becoming a professional singer, where everything would be just fun and glory. My mom is a singer, she's been in the business, and she knows that's not how it is when you're in a band. So, at the time she was like 'Okay...' (laughs). She says that I got a lot from the Nightwish experience because I'm wiser and experienced, and I won't take bullshit anymore. She can see that I have tougher skin now."

There was also a noticeable development on Olzon's voice between the Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum albums, and although the songs on Shine don't necessarily call for the same set of pipes there's a definite edge to her singing.

"I learned to use my voice in different ways. I've always sung with emotion, but before joining Nightwish I was scared of using a softer voice because I was always using a powerful voice instead. It's easier for me to sing at the top of my voice, so I was afraid when I had to use my softer voice in Nightwish. In the studio I could do the ending part of 'The Poet And The Pendulum' (from Dark Passion Play), and I tried to do it live several times. There was something lacking in my self-confidence, so physically I could do it but mentally I couldn't. Tuomas (Holopainen) insisted that I could but I was always say 'No, I can't.' Now I can do it."

Recalling one of Olzon's finest moment in Imaginaerum; the song 'Scaretale', particularly the over-the-top theatre-worthy delivery of the line "Burning farms and squealing pigs."

"I remember Tuomas' when we recorded that," Olzon laughs. "He didn't know what I was going to do, and the whole Imaginaerum thing was a lot of fun because it was like a musical. When it comes to theatrical stuff, I love it, and my big dream is to be a singer in a musical. Imaginaerum was great for that because I could act; I could be a jazz singer, I could be doing nasty things... I was playing a role. The 'squealing pigs' was a perfect moment for that."

For the record, Olzon is dead serious about not performing Nightwish songs live in the future. Ever.

"No, I will never do any Nightwish songs live. You can be sure of that. I was asked to do a tour this past Christmas where I would have been singing some Nightwish songs and I refused. There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, Tuomas is quite disturbed that Tarja is singing some of his songs, so out of respect I'm not going to do that. They're his songs and Floor is singing them now. I also don't be a Nightwish singer for the rest of my life because they have a new one. It would be different if I had written those songs because I would own them and have every right to perform them."

How about the possibility of a tour with Tarja? It's an idea that's no doubt floating around in many a concert promoter's head.

"I don't think so, no. Not because I don't like her, but because our music is so different from each other I think it would be ridiculous to pair us together for a tour. She's doing metal and I'm not. I can't see it happening, but you never know. I think I'd do much better going out with someone more like me."

Anette Olzon is a sensitive woman. You just have to count how many times she uses the word “sad” to understand how the events of her personal and professional life have affected her. However, the singer shows real positivity today, at the dawn of a solo career that can finally bloom now that Nightwish is a thing of the past. Shine, Anette Olzon’s first post-Nightwish record, is an ode to optimism, a hymn to positive feelings, far removed from metal. After various collaborations, this is a second step forward that proves the singer has become rather sought-after.

Speaking of Nightwish, how could we possibly talk to the singer without mentioning her former band? Anette Olzon is sticking to her guns: like Tarja Turunen, she was “fired in a bad way”. She confesses feeling really close to her predecessor because of their similar stories and the fact that “many people still believe that we are the bad ones, [...] that we are the divas, etc”. But Nightwish belongs to the past now, and Anette Olzon readily talked to us about the genesis of her first solo album.

“The only thing that I thought about Nightwish was, since I was in the band at the moment when I wrote the songs, that I didn’t want to sound anything like Nightwish and it shouldn’t compete with my band.”
Radio Metal: You’ve been working on this solo album, for five years. What took you so long, were you too busy with Nightwish?

Anette Olzon: Yeah, I mean that was one of the things because I was planning to release this between our tours, but then when I had done the songs and everything, I got pregnant with my second child also. So I found that I didn’t want to stress it, you know, you need to have time to put an album out, do the promotion and touring. So it was both the pregnancy and Nightwish touring that came between, you know (laughs).

The album is the expression of your own, personal influences, but did somehow your work with Nightwish influence you in the writing?

No, it didn’t, actually, and I think, since I haven’t written so many songs since I was very young, it was a totally new process for me, so I didn’t think about Nightwish. The only thing that I thought about Nightwish was, since I was in the band at the moment when I wrote the songs, that I didn’t want to sound anything like Nightwish and it shouldn’t compete with my band. So that was the only thing I had to think about, but otherwise there hasn’t been anything, any impact from Nightwish.

Actually, can you tell us more about your influences for this album, especially the non metal influences, since this album is a sort of mix of metal, pop and rock?

Yeah, I mean, I didn’t think so much when I did the songs, because when we sat down, me and the guys that I wrote the songs with, Stefan and Johan, we were like empty papers and we didn’t know each other, so it was totally new for us. It was a new situation and when we started to do the songs, first we did “Falling”, which is a bit more like a rock song, and it was nice, but then we said we should do something else. We just sat down and all those a bit softer songs came out. But my influences when it comes to my music, there’s a lot of them because when I was younger, my family was a musical family, so it’s been a lot of jazz and fusion and no rock’n’ roll at all, it was more contemporary style. And also since my mum and my brother were into music, we listened a lot to their favorite artists, so it was a lot of Sheena Easton, Whitney Houston, it was Toto, all of those different music. So I guess when I wrote the songs I just took some of my whole life of music and that’s what happened. So I didn’t think about any special influences, but then of course there’s a lot of things since I’ve been doing music since I was a young child, and been in a lot of different cover bands, of course there will always be melodies in my head, you know, from different things.

This album was produced by Stefan í–rn who has previously worked with MADONNA, CELINE DION, JANET JACKSON and JESSICA SIMPSON, among others. Since this is a very song oriented album, was it important for you to work with someone that has experience in pop music and popular female artists?

Yeah, I mean, I think that, when I wanted to have someone to write the songs with, I was thinking about someone who is really good at songwriting and has done it for many many years, because I am good at melodies and lyrics but I cannot do the music and the arrangements and Stefan is a really talented songwriter and Johan too. So we contacted them and asked if they wanted to work with me. And of course you can hear that they know what they’re doing, you know, they have been working as you said with Cíéline Dion and all those bigger names, so they know how to make my voice sound good in the right key. I’ve been working a lot on that, to see where I sounded the best. And, since I didn’t want to go metal and sound like Nightwish, since I didn’t want to compete, I think pop-rock was the way to go.

“Every time I’ve had a really bad time and very dark time [...] I’ve always been able to think positive in the end and see some kind of light that makes you feel you want to move on and live.”
Is this solo project your main project now? Do you have other projects, other bands in the making?

No, this is my main project at the time. I’ve had some people asking me to join something but I want to only think about this now, because it’s been taking a lot of time and I want to build my solo career up, you know. But in the future, I would like to do other things too, of course, if I have time for it and if there is an interest from bands and projects, but for the time being, I will just focus on this.

Which bands contacted you to join them?

Well, it has been different ones, it’s been bands and projects, I mean, some projects from other artists that have asked me. I don’t want to say any names about that (laughs)! But there have been some requests, yeah!

Do you intend to promote this album on stage?

Yes, I would like to do that. We are currently talking to booking agents because we want to make a tour, so hopefully, quite soon, I would like to go and make a tour, maybe in the spring if that’s possible.

Will the musicians who recorded the album be on stage with you or will you maybe have a live band?

I mean if they want to go, of course, they can go, but they have other things to do in the studio since they are studio musicians, Stefan and Johan. So I would take tour musicians, you know, not a band because I would be the solo artist but there will be musicians following me, of course.

You declared about this album that “The overall message is that life can be really dark and filled with hardship and sadness, but you can always choose to see some light coming through, to make you stronger and full of life – making you SHINE no matter what.” Are you talking about personal dark experiences you had to go through and that made you stronger?

Yeah, I’ve had some of those in my life. I think that most people, if they have lived like 40 years, have had some harder times. It can be divorce or it can be rough childhood or it can be that you were bullied in school or it can be that you lost your job, or you know, someone you loved treated you badly, so I talk about those things. And of course I’ve had my share of harder things in life, but every time I’ve had a really bad time and very dark time or if I’ve really been quite depressed or been sad for a long time, I’ve always been able to think positive in the end and see some kind of light that makes you feel you want to move on and live. Because life is so good and that’s what I want people to think: that even if it’s really dark and if it’s really hard, you can always try and think positive.

And have you always been so positive, actually, or did you have, maybe, some very dark moments when you said “Okay, I give up”, or something like that?

Yeah, I’ve always been a very positive person, ever since I was a very young child, I’ve been quite naive and also positive, and I always thought people were really kind, you know. So, of course, I’ve had my share of nasty people and nasty moments. But yeah, I’ve had two moments in my life when I actually felt like “I just want to die, I don’t want to move on, life is too hard”, and it was when I was a teenager, I was really a fool and I had a really hard time, I had no friends, I was really lonely, my mum worked all the time and I was just so lonely that I didn’t see any positive thing for a few years. But then of course, finally I saw the light (laughs) and then when I was around 30, I got a depression after my first child. After giving birth to him, I ran into a depression and I felt my life wasn’t what I wanted it to be. So I’ve had two darker periods, like really dark periods in my life, but luckily every time I felt that I wanted to move on from the dark side. And now when I have darker times it’s easier to think that it will all be fine, because you have been in that really dark space, so you know that there will be a nicer period of time afterwards.

“I wrote that ["One Million Faces"] after waking up one morning when I had dreamt about [Nightwish] and everything that happened, and then I was just so sad and felt really that I missed my friends and so on.”
Is what happened with Nightwish one of those bad experiences you talk about on the album?

Yeah, I didn’t think about that because the album was made in 2009, but there is one song that I actually wrote last year “One Million Faces” and that song is, in a way, about Nightwish, yeah. I wrote that after waking up one morning when I had dreamt about the band and everything that happened, and then I was just so sad and felt really that I missed my friends and so on. Then I wrote that song “One Million Faces”, so, of course yeah it was a really hard time to divorce from the band (laughs), yeah!

About that particular episode, you declared that you were fired just like Tarja Turunen was. Did that make you feel close to her?

I mean, yeah, in a way, of course it was different because what they did to her was really mean in the way that they also put the letter out on the internet and made her feel bad, you know, with everyone seeing it. With me they were a bit nicer because they didn’t tell everyone that I was fired, and so on, but still we were both fired in a bad way and I was really sad and I know she was really sad, as seen in interviews and so on. Yeah I’ve been feeling a bit more connected to her in a way that our story with the band ended in the same way and also that many people still believe that we are the bad ones, you know, that we are the divas, and so, of course I do feel some kind of similarity with her, yes.

While you were in the band, how did they portray Tarja? Did they actually describe her as a diva?

Yeah. Yeah, I mean every time, mostly it wasn’t the band guys who talked about Tarja because they didn’t talk so much about her, but if it came up, they would mainly say that her husband (note: Marcello Cabuli, Tarja Turunen’s manager) was a bit of a pain. But sometimes, when we went to Finland, there were people, like friends of the band, who always came up to me and talked badly about Tarja. I was like really… I don’t understand why, because I didn’t care about what happened with Tarja because I wasn’t in the band [at the time] and I didn’t want to talk badly about her because I don’t know her. So yeah, there were people who talked really badly about her, amongst the friends of the band.

Actually, have you already met her?

No I haven’t! Isn’t this weird?! (Laughs) But I hope we’ll meet one day because we have the same record label and I think it would be nice, yes, to say hello and ask her how she is and how is the baby, you know. She’s coming to play in Sweden in May, so if I have the time I will try to go and see her when she’s in Gí¶teborg, because I think we should say hello to each other (laughs)!

The band declared that what you said about you being fired is defamatory. Have they taken some legal actions against you?

No, they haven’t. They haven’t done that. I don’t think they could because I didn’t lie, so (laughs)… That’s what it is, we all have our stories we tell people and if they want to say that was what it was, then that’s what it was but I was fired so I’m not lying about it

We know that you had to play the oboe for 8 years. Do you still play it sometimes or are you definitely disgusted by this instrument?

Oh, I hated it, it was such a hard instrument and my teacher said I was really good at playing it but I never practiced because I wanted to sing and I wanted to play the piano. So, no I haven’t played oboe since I sold my oboe when I was like – I think I was 15 years old, or something (laughs)! So, no I would never play it again!

Apparently you still take singing lessons from a private teacher from time to time. Is it important for you to never stop working on your voice and to constantly learn, even now that you’re a professional singer?

I haven’t met her for a while now, but I always try to practice and what I do is also that I try to sing and practice with my head voice and of course as a singer, you always want to be better. You want to be better in those things that you know you are not so good at, and for me of course it’s the classical singing that I haven’t done so much over the years, so when I practice I try to practice my head voice and the more classical approach. I do have a dream that I would be able to sing more with the classical voice at one point, so let’s see, but I think you’re never an accomplished singer, you can always know more; you always need to work with your voice.

You did make a lot appearance as a guest on other bands albums. What can we expect from you in the next few months, do you already have that kind of collaboration scheduled? Like, for example, the one you did with Pain?

No, I haven’t actually, at the moment. I’ve talked to some artists and bands about maybe doing something. I was thinking actually I should do a bonus song for my album with Peter (Tí¤gtgren), so maybe that will happen, maybe we will do a song together for a bonus edition or something. And then of course when I go on tour, maybe I would like to do some songs on stage, like the Pain song or Brother Firetribe or something. So, we’ll see, maybe I will ask Peter or someone to come and join me on the tour. (Laughs) That would be fun!

Do you know what your first name Anette means in french?

No, I just know that it makes me think about Antoinette and those things, but I don’t know what it means, maybe I heard it once or twice, but… Do you know?

Yeah, Aneth is french for dill, which is a herb, that’s used to add some flavour to fish and to soup!

Oh perfect, I like fish or soup (laugh) well, that’s nice to hear! I mean, when I got my name, Anette, I didn’t like it a lot, I was like “I want to be called Josephine” like Napoleon’s wife Josephine, I don’t know why but I wanted to be called Josephine! But then, when I grew older, I started to think Anette is a good name and I like Antoinette and Jeanette and all those names. So that’s good to know that it’s a herb! (Laughs)

Entrevista

Citar
Here the interview made by the Admins:

C/Ma: Because you were no longer in the band when the Imaginaerum movie was released, we didn't really get to hear much on your opinions of the movie or what you thought of it. How did you feel when you saw the movie for the first time? What were some of your favorite memories about making the movie? Do you think you might like to do something like this again if ever given the opportunity, or would you prefer to leave acting to the professionals next time?
Anette:  For me, I´ve always loved to act when I was younger so being in a movie was interesting but I must admit I was a bit skeptical to the whole idea and also I were really nervous during the whole recording. So many people, so many cameras gave me anxiety. But it was a nice memory still=) When I saw the movie I cried in the end. I thought the story was sad and I surely hope it gave the viewer some deeper thoughts. I would love to do more acting and preferably a musical and if I would get asked to act in a movie I would for sure try it again=)

C/Ma: Many fans were so so upset when you suddenly departed from Nightwish in the middle of the U.S. tour. Do you think you'll ever get the chance to make it up to them by touring the U.S. as a solo artist? Do you think touring the U.S. as a solo artist might be a possibility?
Anette: I also were upset and sad that I couldn't see all the US fans since I have loved being there and I really hope I can come with my solo or as a singer in another band one day. With my solo its all about money and time to come over since it normally costs to tour if you´re not a big artist. But let´s keep our fingers crossed for the future!

M: You have announced some gigs here and  there; but any chance there might be a full European or world tour in the near future?
Anette: In the future that can happen but at the moment I can only do gigs in weekends, shorter trips and festivals due to me studying 3 years. its really hard to make a choice in either direction and I want to study to get a good education as well as sing but I know that I can do both if I just plan properly. Whatever happens in the coming years will show what direction I´ll continue to follow. Life is like that. We choose a path and then that path can change depending on different things so who knows. But at this time I study full time and music is on the side.

M: Shine  was  a very personal album for you. Did  you find it difficult to sing about personal things?
Anette: Some of the songs were really hard, like Moving away, which I wrote after my mum got cancer. Every time I sing it, I feel a sting in my heart from that worrying time before she got recovered from her cancer.

M: Shine seems to have the theme of contrast between the good and bad sides of life. What sort of "theme" would you like to have for your next album?
Anette: I like the contrast between black and white - dark and light. For me, life has always been divided into those two and I am sure many of my coming lyrics will be in the same range but of course when writing songs and lyrics it all depends on my life and where I am at the moment. I wrote one song some months ago and that is a positive song in the same lyric style as my song SHINE so I continue with my writing style in coming songs too.

M: Do you think you will release a second solo album soon?
Anette: I would love to release it early next year but its also about the label and their wishes.

M: - Recently you announced you were in the studio again to record a "secret" song, for a "secret" project. So many secrets! Why all these secrets?
Anette: Cause sometimes we can't tell it all=)

M: - How do you see your future as a solo artist? What kinds of things do you expect?
Anette: I hope I can do some more albums and have fun with my music and of course sell albums here in Sweden too. I would love to have more fans in my home country.

M: You've gone back to school to study nursing. What made you choose this particular subject?
Anette: I´ve always been fascinated by hospitals and working there, helping others and especially working with children and babies. So I want to become a midwife or a nurse in children´s care. I have studied within the behavioral science too so I can also see myself higher up working as a manager in health care. We´ll see where I end up! I might even want to study further and take a higher degree. I take one day at a time and make new goals along the way.

M: How do you see your future as a solo artist? What kinds of things do you expect?
Anette: I don't expect anything cause music business is so hard nowadays.

C/Ma: You like to talk a lot about shopping, clothes, and fashion on your blog and are known for your unique sense of style by the way you dress onstage. Have you ever considered the idea of an "Anette Olzon" line of clothing, handbags, or perfume; like so many other singers out there?
Anette: Yes, I think about designing clothes every day and that is a dream I really would love to make come true. But its not so easy when you haven't worked in that field so the problem is that I would need help and a good mentor to teach me all the important things to make it a success

A: What personality traits do you value the most in people?
Anette: Kindness, honesty and the biggest heart=)

A: What's your favourite movie soundtrack and why?
Anette: Gladiator cause it´s just the best movie and the music is totally amazing from beginning to the end.

A: Do you like bands like Epica and Within Temptation? If so, what do you think about their latest albums "The Quantum Enigma" and "Hydra"?
Anette: Yes, I like both. I haven't heard Epica´s new album but most of WT`s songs from Hydra I´ve heard and I like it even if I must say I prefer the older WT albums when Sharon sang with her high birdlike voice. It was what made me love the band back then.

Questions from the fans:

 C. (OSA admin):
-You and your husband are both musicians, and also parents. How do you juggle home/family life while out on the road; especially when your two youngest children are not quite of school age yet?
Anette: We try and plan and help each other and I also have the best mother in the world who helps me and takes care of my little ones early mornings so I can go to school and work. Having people to help is what makes it work
Adrian, (Madrid, Spain); Dark Passion Spanish site:
-Do you remember when you wrote your first song? The very first one, I mean; even if you were 8 and [it] was absolutely childish. What was it about?
Anette: Haha, I made up songs in my head every day when walking home from school and they were always just a song about the day. So it could be about something that happened in the school yard but I don't remember a specific song. I just made them up while singing walking home from school.

Thayna Borges, (Manus, Brazil):
-Of all the Nightwish songs, which one would you most like to sing that you haven't yet?
Anette: Swanheart or Bless the child

Laura Fernandez, (Spain):
-Are you looking forward to go to Madrid the 27th of November?
Anette: Yes, I am looking forward and I hope I can make the show and band sound great until then!
-Do you like to take photos with your fans after a show? Or you prefer to take some rest?
Anette: It depends on how I feel and how long of a show its been. With NW I was always exhausted since the songs were a bit demanding but with my own songs I am not so tired.

Ile Olzon:
-If you were told: do a cover of Tarja solo. What song would you choose?
Anette: I do love I walk alone so maybe that one=)
 Weronika Oszajca, (Poland):
Hello Anette. I would like to ask you about the simple things. What is your favorite color, favorite bands, what you listen to when you were a teenager? What countries would you like to visit someday? By the way, congratulations on a beautiful voice
Anette: Thanks so much Weronika for your kind words and here´s my answers:
Favourite color: Pink and black
Favourite bands: Alter bridge, Pain, Within temptation among others
Music I listened to when I was a teenager was: Carola, ABBA, Def Lepard, Heart, Steelheart, musicals, Donald Fagen, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Michael Jackson
Countries to visit: I´ve seen so many countries so not many left but Iceland, Alaska and Africa
 Anna, (Poland):
- Do you think about your next album? Do you write songs for it? Or do you want to do something different?
Anette: I don't write at the moment but I have done some songs already. I want SHINE 2 but this time it might be some more uptempo songs. I want a little bit more of guitars and rock on some songs.

 Atharjatha, (Poland):
- Do you plan or want to sing in Swedish? What do you think about singing in your mother tongue?
Anette: yes, I really feel I want to sing in Swedish and have made a song in Swedish and it felt great to sing in my native language.

 Dawid, (Poland):
- Looking back on your vocals on Dark Passion Play/Imaginaerum, are you pleased with yourself or would you change something?
Anette: I am pleased and love my vocals on both albums.
- With who would you like to sing in a duet and why?
Anette: Rammstein and Sting. Just love Rammstein´s music and sound, so brutal but great melodies. And Sting is my favorite male singer and it would be amazing since his music is in some ways a bit similar to some of my songs. The mood and softness.

Sabrina Liliana Fabris, (Italy):
-Any plans to tour in Italy in the near future, or to play any concerts there?
Anette: Nothing planned at the moment so come to Spain in november=)

 Andreina Grimaldi:
-What is your singing technique for some of the high notes (like the D-sharp on "Storytime")? Do you have a vocal coach to help you with this training?
Anette: Not a vocal coach now but I´ve had training by a great teacher in the music university i Malmí¶ called Anna Lena Tideman. She is super good at belting and have given me lots of technical support.

 Lucia Freire:
-Any plans to tour in Portugal anytime soon?
Anette: Nothing planned at the moment so come to Spain=)

 Sarah Estevez Lois:
-How do you manage to juggle a musical career, family, *and* going back to school to become a nurse?
Anette: Its hard cause there are gigs I have to decline to play due to school and thats always a hard choice to make but since I´ve taken a decision I want to get an education and I am quite old to study already, I need to focus on that first. Music is on the side and I hope I can still make my music work during these coming years cause I love to sing.
Anette: What kind of jobs have you had in the past besides singing, and what kind of job would you be doing if you weren't a singer?
- I´ve made almost everything=) I´ve worked in a factory, in a hamburger restaurant, as a waitress, as a veterinarian assistant, in lots of different offices, as a hair dresser and more=)
Anette: Are you thinking of getting more tattoos? Do you have a particular one in mind right now?
Yes, all the time=) I have one in mind and as soon as I can fly down to Hamburg I´ll do it at my tattoo girls place!

Angí¨lie Guíérin, (France):
-Which studies have you made before become a singer?
Anette: I don't know if you mean regular studies or as a singer? Regular studies I´ve been to restaurant school, hair dresser school, musical artist education, university studies within psychology, project management and leadership and organization. Within singing vocal lessons between age 16-25 and then musical artist studies, acting classes.
-Your personnal and familly lifes hasn't too difficult with your job ?
Anette: Its a bit stressful but I have a good husband and family to help me out.

Swedish singer Anette Olzon who got hers recognition mostly because she was bold enough to stepping in the shoes of Tarja Turunen after her departure from legendary Finnish band Nightwish in 2007. She recorded with them two albums, Dark Passion Play (2007) and Imaginaerum (2011). In that time the fans of the Finns were divided between the haters and lovers of a band without their darling Tarja. I believe that you all remember how many harsh words were then going on through media and social networks after that inglorius North American tour in 2012 when Anette was suddenly kicked out of the band and soon replaced by Floor Jansen. Anette Olzon then recovered from that shock and earlier this year released her debut solo album named Shine through earMusic. Shine is nothing else than a masterpiece in the fields of darker yet melancholic pop rock genre, shining mostly because of its catchines, powerful vocal performance, professional songwriting, deep, yet insightful lyrics and amazing production. Still Anette is not only that and beside everything mentioned she also did some interesting guest appearances, earlier in her career she took part in the Swedish AOR band Alyson Avenue and recently she recorded vocals for the new album of another AOR project Sapphire Eyes and yet that's not everything. Now Anette lives with her boyfriend, and Pain bassist, Johan Husgafvel and they have two sons, Seth, born July 2001 and Nemo, born in July 2010. Many other interesting things Anette revealed in the interview she kindly answered.
T.V.: Hi Anette! Thank you for taking some time to answer my questions. You are on your own now, with a solo album recently released, so how do you feel about everything?
Anette: At the moment I don't do so much with my solo career since I´ve started to study in the university and have to focus mainly on my studies, so it´s calm and peaceful. I have four gigs coming up in Spain in November so that will be fun though!
Anette Olzon - InterviewT.V.: Shine was released in March this year, so the initial enthusiasm, I think, calmed down and I wonder how do you look now at this album of yours?
Anette: I still love my album and I also believe that when I'll release my next album this album will get even more recognition because I believe it's a really good album.
T.V.: Indeed is a good album and it was in the making since 2009. So, how much of your personal touch is in it? It was written completely by yourself or it's done in major part by other composers?
Anette: I´ve been there writing all the songs together with my co-writers, so I´ve been part of it all and I've been there through the whole process.
T.V.: The production on the album is really fantastic. You worked on it also with some great names like Stefan í–rn who is songwriter and producer of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest winning track "Running Scared", plus some other renowned producers. It was mixed by Nicklas Flykt and Ronny Lahti, who is known for his work with Loreen and Roxette. Tell me how it was working with those experienced guys?
Anette: It was really nice and all the guys are so kind and talented. They made the whole process really easy.
T.V.: I remember reading somewhere that this is kind of a healing album for you after your mother got sick of cancer and yours departure from Nightwish, and that can be sensed also from the lyrics. How much truth is in those sayings?
Anette: I wrote the album from my heart and during 2009 while I was still in Nightwish, so I didn't know the whole situation would come and therefore there is nothing about the break-up in there, except from one song I wrote in 2012 - "One Million Faces". And that song came out of the sadness from the break-up with the band. All other songs are very personal and I wrote them about my life and mainly sad things, yes. I believe we have different faces and I keep a sadder side inside that I do not show to others so it has to come out somewhere and writing songs about it helps.
Anette Olzon - InterviewT.V.: And beside that what are other things that inspires you when you're writting lyrics and music?
Anette: It can be anything, but I do have a special thing for sad songs and lyrics.
T.V.: Shine was released by earMusic and I'm wondering how this collaboration with such a big label started and how are you satisfied with them?
Anette: I think its been an ok deal with them. They haven't done such a big PR for the album as I`d wished for, especially in Scandinavia. They are also a more rock/metal label so I guess it's harder for them to release a more pop/rock album like Shine.
T.V.: Some weeks ago you announced that you are working on a new song, any updates about it? Are you already working on a new album and if yes when can we expect it?
Anette: I´m doing some songs and some projects but I cant talk about any of it yet. In this business there are always secrets and hush-hush, so it can only be revealed when it's meant for it.
T.V.: Ok, I understand. Those who follow your Facebook profile couldn't miss a cappella interpretations of some Nightwish songs. What's the purpose of those and it seems that your fans accepted them very well...
Anette: I had wishes from fans to hear me sing the songs, so I did it, and especially songs I hadn't performed live with the band such as "Turn loose The Mermaid". They were happy about it and my a cappella videos have gotten a great response. To show that you don't need to have a studio with microphone and stuff to record and show your voice and also I want to show that I am not all perfect. I sing because I love it and I love to try new things. Having fun with music.
T.V.: You shot a video for the amazing song "Lies". How it was shoting it and I'm interested if there's any other video clip in preparations?
Anette: No singles or videos are coming, no. It was fun to shot it, but it was so cold..bra..

T.V.: You already had some live shows as a solo artist and I'm curious how the audience accepted you performing solo as Anette Olzon?
Anette: The gigs I´ve done so far have been all good and the audiences have been really nice and positive about them.
Anette Olzon - InterviewT.V.: Can you tell us if there's a tour through Europe or even overseas on the schedule in the near or not so distant future?
Anette: No tour is planned at the moment. As I told you I am studying now and also I have small children and I don't want to leave them for long periods as I did with my oldest son. Those days have to come later on in the future when they are older.
T.V.: Do you ever perform live any of Nightwish songs?
Anette: No, not yet.
T.V.: Recently you announced Axl Ludwig Ayez and Johnny Benson as new members of your line-up. Can you give us some more words/details about all the musicians you are working and play live with?
Anette: Well, these two guys are rockers from Malmí¶ and I haven't played with them before so we´ll see how it works out. For me, since I only hire musicians and not have a band, I can and will exchange musicians if needed but I do hope these guys will work perfectly, both musically as well as in coolness on stage.
T.V.: I can't skip this question and look some years back in time. How it was stepping back then in the shoes of Tarja Turunen and replace such an icon? I remember there was some kind of war going on online between the fans and non-fans of Tarja?
Anette: I didn't understand the whole situation at first, cause I didn't understand how big of an icon she was. And then in the beginning I didn't think about it at all because I was me and did my thing, but when the hatred started to flourish to my mail box, to the internet, to shows, then I asked myself what I was doing in that situation and it really made me insecure and unhappy.
Anette Olzon - InterviewT.V.: And there were a lot of harsh words between you and the rest of Nightwish after that inglorious American tour. How do you look at everything right now?
Anette: I am calmer of course and I don't hold a grudge to anyone in that camp, even if it was one of the worst things I`ve had to go through and the scars will be there forever.
T.V.: Were there any tensions inside the band even before your departure or it happened just out of nothing?
Anette: Not before I told them I was pregnant during the tour, then the turmoil started.
T.V.: You did some collaborations with acts such as Pain, Brother Firetribe, Swallow The Sun and Rasmus. How it was working with them and which one was the best one? If I can add, I really loved the Pain's "Follow Me" and Swallow The Sun's "Cathedral Walls"!
Anette: I loved my dear Pain heads so that's the one I cherish the most and also Brother Firetribe. Firetribe is doing music I love and close to where I come from and the guys are all so kind and sweet.
T.V.: Have you already got any enquirys to sing and become the frontwoman in any other band. Are you even looking out for joining any band right now?
Anette: I do some projects singing with others but no band at this moment. Not looking for a band since I don't have a lot of time even to do my own music.
Anette Olzon - InterviewT.V.: Ok, but you sing also in AOR project Sapphire Eyes and if I'm not mistaken the band has a new album on the way. It seems that you are open to various styles of music?
Anette: Yes, I sing almost everything and I do things I like and do not care so much about the genre and so on.
T.V.: You are in a relation and live with another great musician, Pain's bassist, Johan Husgafvel, and have two sons. How do you deal with and divide the time between music and family?
Anette: We both help each other out so we can do almost everything we want and I want to have him with me on the road, so we always try and fix, so he can play the gigs and get our parents and family to look after the kids while we are away.
T.V.: I think that would be all. What would you like to say in the end to our readers and your fans?
Anette: I hope you continue to follow me cause I will of course never stop doing music and next year will have some fun things for me in store, so stay tuned.

Former NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon has "decided to part ways" with earMUSIC, the Hamburg, Germany-based international rock label which is part of Edel Group.

Anette's debut solo album, "Shine", was released in March and received mostly positive reviews, despite its lack of metal overtones and its reliance on pop hooks and grandiose arrangements.

Asked during a recent question-and-answer session on her Facebook page when fans can expect to hear the follow-up to "Shine", Olzon said: "I actually don't know that, since I have decided to part ways with my record label and go on my own. So let's see when and how I will release something. probably will release most stuff only in the Internet and iTunes and so on, since album sales are so bad nowadays."

She added: "I'm thinking a lot about my next project, but I haven't started to make new songs more than the ones I've already done, so how it will sound like I don't know yet."

Olzon did, however, make it clear that those fans who are expecting to see her pursue a more metal-based direction on her next album will likely be disappointed.

"I come from another musical background, and when I write music, it doesn't come out as metal," she said. "But, of course, some songs might be a bit harder, but metal is not my music style."

Asked if she would return to NIGHTWISH if she ever had the chance, Anette said: "No, I wouldn't if things would be as they were [just] before we parted [ways]. If [things] were [again] as [they were] in 2007-2008, yes."

Olzon also spoke about the difficulty of replacing NIGHTWISH's iconic singer Tarja Turunen in 2007 and the negative feedback she received from some of the fans after she joined the group.

"Of course it hasn't been fun and it seems no matter what I do they will always hate me," she said. "But I can't stop being me for that and they don't know me or who I am and they judge me for everything that has happened and that's their choice. I just wish all the hate towards me and, of course, the other singers, could stop, 'cause hate is never a good thing to stick to. It makes your soul dark and life negative."

Olzon was fired from NIGHTWISH in September 2012 in the middle of the band's North American tour. She has since been replaced by former AFTER FOREVER and current REVAMP singer Floor Jansen.

In an interview with Metal Blast, Olzon stated about how she has been portrayed since her departure from NIGHTWISH: "It was really hard for me. You can always say 'no comment' and say nothing about what happened, or you can open your mouth, as I have done. It was really hard for me to decide if I should say something or if I should keep quiet. But I felt that in order for me to move on, I needed to tell my story. I also knew that there would be a lot of hate and negativity directed toward me; I can feel that many people do hate me because I have told people my truth. At first people were a bit more negative, but since then it has been less and less of that. I hope that now it can become more about me and 'Shine'. I know there's some negative PR, but people who know me would say it's a big laugh, me being called a diva. I just hope that all the negativity will fade away quite soon so we can all move on."

The love began in the tour bus

Anette Olzon, 43, gave a long list about her dream man. – Johan has it all.

The Swedish singer had argue with the other Nightwish members in 2012. In October, 2012, Nightwish announced that Anette had left the band. Before the final break up Anette got sick during the tours and was delivered to the hospital. The same evening the band had chosen two singers from the warmup bands to perform instead of Anette.
- At that point I was really angry, because they didn’t even as my opinion of the matter. Our managers had a lot of arguing on the email. After that stuff started happening really fast.
- I have wonderful memories of my time in Nightwish. I miss several things: gigs, performing and being a fulltime singer. In the end I didn’t feel well. I hope well to the band and I hope I meet them at some point.
Dream man is a musician
Anette is married with Johan from the band Pain. The couple has two children, 4-year old Nemo and1-year old Mio. Anette has from her previous marriage a 13-year old Seth.
The couple met when Pain was the Warmup band for Nightwish in 2008. The year before Anette had divorced from her ex-husband.
- I prayed for a nice musician man into my life, who would be fit had had long dark hair. I hade a list of qualities in my mind, she remembers.
- When I met Johan I thought that I had to have him. He was married at the time and I would never steel another woman’s man. He is a wonderful man and those doesn’t just come in front of you.
When Johan divorced, the friendship became more.
- I invited him into my tourbus and everybody were like “oh no, Anette was funnier when she was single”, the Swedish singer laughed.
In August 2013 Anette and Johan celebrated their wedding, the same time as their son got his name.

Scarytimes on the tour

While Nightwish was working on their second album with Anette, the singer got pregnant. After the thour started, she realised that touing with a small child wasn’t a good idea.
- I was constantly stressed and worried. I thought, that if something happens to him, it’s my fault. I’m really protective towards my children.
On the European Tour, Anette noticed that the child could not be a part of the tour.
- Some cable managed to go into the tourbus wheels and the bus had to make a rapid fullstop. At the time Nemo was in my arms and he flew against the stirring wheel. He was ok, but at that moment I started thinking what am I doing.
Having children with me was hard for the other members as well.
- They wanted me to ride in the same bus as the, to be a part of the gang. I had to have an own bus because of my children. It was then the cooperation started to break. Because I was in a different place as them.

Apartment in Helsinki

Anette will move on part time to Helsinki, Finland to take part of a Tí¤hdet Tí¤hdet (start stars) tv-show. The singer’s husband, Nemo and Mio are in Finland for the first three weeks.
- The show has arranged an apartment for us from Helsinki. This is great, with the thought of Johan, because he’s Finnish. He has never lived in Finland, but he was a Finnish citizen for 18 years. His parents moved to Sweden to work. He always talks Finnish with his family. His grandmother lives in Finland, so I will meet her for the first time.
For Johan it is important to show his children the family origin.
- Specially Nemo is happy about the move. He’s asking all the time when are we going where the Muumis are. My eldest son Seth cannot move to Finland because of school, but I want him here for the weekends and he can come and watch the shows liveshows.
Anette hopes to manage well in tí¤hdet tí¤hdet-show because of her mother.
- My mom has never been in Finland, she promised to fly here if I get into the finals. So I have to get into the finals, Anette laughed.

Oh what a lovely day! Today I am so happy and excited cause me and my old dear friend Raimo, who nowadays is a great photographer and also have made some band videos, are gonna make new little video for my favourite song SHINE=)

So happy and this time it will be recorded in Helsingborg and the beautiful sceneries of our city and nature and my kids will also be there for some shots.

SHINE is a positive song with a very important message and today I want you to think of this and especially to people who are going through bullying and others people being mean and disrespectful to you:

Forgive the unkind - so bitter and envy
No LIGHT in their day - blackening lies
Shine bright - see all YOUR glory
No need to CRY - stand strong and you´ll FLY!

SO SHINE and lift your HEAD HIGH
Hold - you´ll never be LONELY
cause LIFE is ALL that you NEED

And we had a very stormy day to work in but nature is just so stunning that it can not be defeated so we had to go with it and except from freezing my feet off it was such a great afternoon. This video is made with my old friend Raimo who has a great photography company called PHOTO BY GEDDA

His lovely wife Sanna assisted us all day and we had a blast!

Tomorrow we´ll do some more and also some shots with my kids=)

The second day of filming my video for SHINE is done and now I leave it to Raimo at PHOTO BY GEDDA to check the material and make his magic=)

Today we were in Rí¥í¥dalen outside Helsingborg and what a lovely day! The forest showed itself with such colors so it was a pleasure to be there and sing SHINE=) One guy who tried to get some fishes in the stream got a bit irritated of my singing and scaring his fish away but well, I hope the fish were happy for that, haha!

We were gonna have a scene with me and my children but unfortunately Nemo fell from our coach today and hurt his knee bad so couldn't do that. But thats life, the video will be great still=)

- What’s new in the world of Anette Olzon?
At the moment I am quite a busy bee rehearsing for my first show this year, February 20th in Helsinki, as well as rehearsing and preparing for the TV-show Tí„HDET Tí„HDET where I am one of the participants, starting off march 1st in Finland.

- How was it recording the album Shine?
It was really nice and easy since I worked with such great professionals as Johan Glí¶ssner and Stefan í–rn. They made everything run so smoothly so it was a great ride to make the album.

- How did you go about for ideas in making the artwork?
I really wanted the album cover to be something with nature. I started off with sending the record label photos I had taken myself from the forest where the sun shines through the trees. Thats how I think of SHINE and we started from there and then when I did the photo session with Patric Ulleus we took lots of these kinda photos and it was so hard to choose, but the one we ended up with feels so SHINE to me and I love it. I just filmed my second video and this time its the song SHINE we filmed and I have this pose in this one too and Raimo, the video maker calls it my SHINE pose=) So maybe thats just my signature pose.

- What is the strangest inspiration you’ve ever had for a song?
Haha, now I need to tell a very old memory from my times in Alyson Avenue, where I wrote the lyrics back then. We were so tired after a long writing session in the rehearsal room and we played in a house where many bands also rehearsed, some punk bands, dance bands and even very angry death metallers, so we always had fun listening to the different music styles that came through the house walls. This afternoon in the tired state we were in, we started just making silly songs pretending we were a dance band and then a death metal band who were really angry. And well, my lyrics were also kinda strange=) The dance band song were really happy melody but I sang sad lyrics in Swedish, translated they were: So I´m picking a flower to your grave, have a feeling you´re feeling just like me=) And then the angry song I just growled: DIE!!! over and over…haha! Oh my, so thats the strangest inspiration I´ve gotten.

- How important are music videos in the industry today? How do they compare to videos from 20 years ago?
Well, since MTV doesn´t play so much music anymore as they did back then, its not so easy to get your video to be played on TV as then, but at the same time a video is so much more important today, since many people won’t listen to a song without a video. Youtube is so big among the kids and teenagers today and they watch videos all the time in there. So even if we don’t have to make such expensive videos as before, we do need to make more videos for the albums to show our music in the internet. Lyric videos are also big today and an easy way for the record labels to make a cheap and fast video to a new band.

- What’s your take on the sex appeal in the music industry? Is it as important for men and women?
I believe theres a higher demand on women and girls in music to look sexy and slim and so on than for a man. Especially in the metal scene I can’t say men have any demands to look sexy, quite the opposite. In pop I think the guys need to think more of their looks and sex appeal though, but still theres a higher demand on women in every field in the world still.

- Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
Its normally a lot of just waiting around and trying to keep yourself occupied while waiting for the sound check and the gig. Sometimes there are interviews and meet and greets to do. I also exercise on tour so thats something I try to do almost every day. I read books, watch movies and then I do vocal warm ups and my make up and hair starting appr 2 hours before the gig.

- What would we be surprised to find in your music collection at home?
I have some nice old vinyls from my teenage years and there´s some fun stuff like the album from the movie “The never-ending story” with Limahl and yeah, I also have one of those albums with the blue smurfs=)

- What goals as a musician have you yet to achieve?
So many! But some is that I would love to go on tour to USA, Japan, South America and so on with my solo. I want to have my songs to be played in the radio in Sweden and I would love to win a Grammy one day=)

The Swedish song is named "VINTERSJí„L" and the English one is named "COLD OUTSIDE".
I will release them digital as a digital EP and it will be available in Spotify and iTunes. No printed copies will be available and they are released without a record label.
The cover is below and the photo is taken by Raimo Gedda and the artwork is made by Alicia Kí¶hler.
The songs are currently going through mastering and then I´ll release them so VERY soon!=)

Someone was kind to make an English translation so here u go;
Anette Olzon sells her clothes – huge demand surprised her
Nightwish's ex-vocalist Anette Olzon sells her old clothes because storing them takes too much space.
Anette who released her new Vintersjí¤l/Cold Outside -EP last week worked as a vocalist for Nightwish in 2007-2012. During tours, the singer bought new clothes almost daily.
– I had to have a different outfit for every concert. That was my thing. My wardrobes filled up because I used the outfits for that one time only, Anette told to Costume.
Anette noticed that there was demand for her clothes and many fans wanted their own piece of their favourite singer. She founded a blog called Anette Olzon's Vintage Store in which the singer presents the products that are for sale.
– I sell a part of my clothes for a second hand -shop located in my hometown Helsingborg. Many people have said to been asking after my clothes. I was gladly amazed by the popularity of my clothes. I have sold some of my clothes in a vintage-shop in Copenhagen. I sell a lot of practically new clothes, because I've used them probably once. I sell a lot of products from brands that you can't necessarily get for example from Australia.

And from Finnish Seiska magazine:
http://www.seiska.fi/…/Anette-Olzon-vaihtoi-lauluki…/1093281
Someone made a translation so here we go;
Anette Olzon changed singing language – tried to become a Eurovision representative
Ex-vocalist from Nightwish, Anette Olzon challenged herself and wrote a song in Swedish.
Anette worked on her new Vintersjí¤l-song together with Martijn Spierenburg from Within Temptation and Bloodbound-rocker Fredrik Bergh. The song was already made a couple of years ago, then with English lyrics.
– Later on I decided to rewrite the lyrics in Swedish. I wanted to try writing in my mother tongue, because I had never done it before. At the studio we noticed that the Swedish version sounded very good, Anette comments for Seiska.
The song nearly qualified to Melodifestivalen, even a couple of times.
– I sent Vintersjí¤l to Melodifestivalen a few times and it nearly made it to the contest on both years. This year I sent another song from my EP, Cold Outside, to the contest. They said to me that the song will qualify, but in the end they told me they didn't have a suitable place for me. For three years I've been told that I'm getting in to the contest, but still it hasn't happened, so I've let that dream go. I decided to release the songs anyway.

BREAKING NEWS: Frontiers Music Srl is very pleased to announce the launch of a new musical partnership between singer Anette Olzon and producer/songwriter/guitar player Jani Liimatainen for a new studio album, which will see release on the label in 2017.
Anette is mostly known for being the immaculate voice on hit albums from Nightwish such as “Dark Passion Play” and “Imaginaerum”. Jani has recently been busy in Cain's Offering alongside Stratovarius singer Timo Kotipelto, but left a deep mark on the minds of all power metal fans thanks to his time in Sonata Arctica. They are now working together on a record which promises to be a huge statement in the European metal scene for years to come!
Jani says, "I have always been a big fan of Anette's voice and when the opportunity to work with her arose, writing and producing an album, it was something I just couldn't say no to! It has been a blast working on the songs already and I can't wait for the final result, this will be epic! The songs will be extremely melodic and to the point. My goal has been to write catchy songs with hooks that will haunt your dreams, and I think it's pretty much "mission accomplished". Stay tuned for something special!"
Anette adds, “I am so looking forward to sing on an album with Jani and to finally work with Frontiers. I believe it will be a perfect match and I am really happy that Jani and Frontiers asked me to do this with them!”
Frontiers President Serafino Perugino concludes, “I originally envisioned the musical alliance between those two musical giants and the fact that they liked the concept proposed makes me incredibly proud! Working with two high class musicians like Jani and Anette is a true honor and we will do our complete best to please them and to release a record which will make all the melodic and power metal fans very happy!”
Frontiers looks forward to releasing this record in mid to late 2017!

The songs are both heavy metal ones mixed with some easier rock songs and I must say there are pure elements from both Janis Sonata-times and my NW-times so if you like those bands you´ll probably like this album!

Love and light,
Anette

We can now reveal that we have a very special guest singing all the female vocal choirs on WAR OF DRAGONS.......

....It is none other than the amazing ANETTE OLZON from NIGHTWISH!

We are all big fans of the "Dark Passion Play" and "Imaginaerum" albums she did with NIGHTWISH and Fredrik Bergh has also worked with her on her solo material.

She did a great job and her magical voice is a great addition to the BLOODBOUND sound!

Cheers, Nos n Da Boyz.

When it comes to Nightwish, I have been flying the Anette flag for a few years now.  She is unquestionably best known for her years in that band.  For reasons I’m not even sure I can explain, she’s always been my favorite Nightwish singer.  More importantly though, she is a fiercely devoted wife and mother; a lovely human being whose passion lies in caring for others.

Since her last days in Nightwish, she’s released solo material and has been involved with different projects including her new project, The Dark Element whose album is to be released via Frontiers Music in November.

She seems as happy as ever and we are very grateful she has taken a few minutes out of her day to answer our email interview.  Enjoy!

PAST

There has been some debate regarding the following; There is a clip online of you doing a show in Brazil and at the end of “The Pit and the Pendulum” you walk off stage. Some have said the reasons were; people shouting mean things, the smoke coming up and bothering you and also personal reasons. What is your response on this and again, I completely respect if you are uncomfortable about answering.

Anette: it was many factors and one was that when I walked in on stage there was a smoking machine that blew smoke on me and since I have asthma and problems singing in a dry room and smokey areas I immediately started to have problems singing and it continued through the show so when poet and the pendulum came and singing under hard circumstances struggling I just broke down. I was tired from heavy touring, some problems in the band and a big home sickness missing my son. All things combined just made me break down and on top of it all I had gotten death threats before some shows in South America where they said they wanted to shoot me in the head in front of my son and I was really scared. We even had extra security so as you can see it wasn’t one thing that led to the break down but many in combination. A sad evening nevertheless and I felt very ashamed afterwards.

After having suffered the flu in Denver and missing the show, you decided you were well enough to perform in Salt Lake City.  How did you find the strength to make it through?

Anette: I wanted to do the show for the fans of course and it was my job to sing so it wasn’t more than to do it. As an artist you know the fans have waited to hear and see you and it’s very hard to cancel a show so it’s not something I’d like to do and many shows during those years I was ill but still came on stage.

What was it about the music that kept you going during the turbulent times toward the end or was it simply the devotion of the fans?

Anette: I am very loyal and devoted to my job so even if we had bad times I still kept going those hours on stage and in those moments I never cared about anything since I loved to sing and be on stage. That feeling is what make me do it in every bad day cause I love to perform.

PRESENT/FUTURE

I read that you were studying nursing. If that’s the case, what made you decide to do that?

Anette: I already studied at the uni when entering Nightwish and studied science behavior but when I came home from the last tour I decided to change and go into nursing school since I want a job that always will be needed for and I have always loved caring for others so it’s a very rewarding job to do.

“Shine” and “Lies” were two of the singles and videos that you released in recent years. Do you think your solo work was more of a inward reflection and a therapy for yourself or were they more for the fans with a message of overcoming obstacles?

Anette: yeah it was and I wrote the songs after that whole turmoil in South America in 2009 and the long exhausting tour we made. It was very therapeutic to write songs about my childhood, my mums illness that happened at that time but also love songs for my son and husband. So it was more for me than for those listening.

I read on your blog that you still suffer from “night terrors.” Do you think that these have influenced your music at all?

Anette: I don’t know but they are horrible and I have them very frequent. It’s also hard since I am an adult and I understand it’s not reality but in the night when they occur I can’t think rationally and I’m extremely scared and need to wake my husband to ease me down.

The most recent solo release you’ve had was “Vintersjal/Cold Outside.” You’ve got the album with the Dark Element project coming up.  What can you tell us about The Dark Element?

Anette: It’s a great thing I’m very happy I am a part of. When I was asked to do this project I had no idea of how Janis songs would sound so it was a bit of a gamble until I heard the first demo and I could relax, cause I immediately heard it would be a great album. And it’s been a positive vibe from both magazines and fans so far so I hope it will be a big success of course.

Do you have any plans to do some more solo material?

Anette; Not at the moment but who knows in the future when I have time to sit down and make some songs again.

Some time ago (2016) you appeared on a talk show hosted by David Hasselhoff who appeared to know nothing or have done any research prior to you coming on. He also seemed drunk. How in the world did you get through that without strangling the man? :o)

Anette: haha well I was honored to meet with a childhood idol as he is, an icon I must say and yeah he was truly a character but I must say it was so much fun to be in the show. A great memory!

GENERAL

Ok let’s say that I stole your Ipod. What do you think would be the biggest surprise that I wouldn’t expect you to be listening to?

Anette: haha, well I have lots of music I listen to and it’s very varied so hard to say but maybe some Swedish rap song?

Many, many years from now in an old abandoned home, a very distant relative locates a box in the attic. In the box they find a CD with your name and something to play it on. What do you what them to know, just by listening to the music about the work you created throughout your career?

Anette: oh wow what a nice question and a hard one too! I would love if they could hear that I loved what I sang, that they could feel what I sang and that I meant what I sang. That’s what I want the listener to hear when I sing. And that I did more than one thing in music.

Thanks Anette for your time!  You’re the best.

Anette Olzon's exclusive interview:

Firstly, I would like to thank you immensely for giving this interview to the Confraria Floydstock.

1 - How did you start your story with music?

- I have always loved music and ever since I was a little child music was in my home all the time. My mother and my stepfather both played in bands and I heard it all the time and my whole mother’s families side is musicians in different ways. So at a very young age I sang all the time and it has always been my dream to be a singer.  I started early with singing in my mums band, entering talent shows and taking vocal lessons followed by joining my first band at 16 years of age.

2 - As a teenager you sang in ABBA's cover band, one of the greatest exponents of Swedish music. How was that season? It was cool?

This was actually not in my teens but a while before I joined Nightwish. It was fun but also very hard cause Abbas songs are not easy to sing or perform live. But I loved to be Agneta on stage since it was with abba I kinda started singing in my living room. My very first album I bought for my own money was Abbas album The arrival.

3 - We can say that her contribution to the band Alyson Avenue was twofold: first being a great singer who fit in and leveraged or group, and then, when you took over as   vocalist, driving off record sales on Alyson Avenue. How was that phase?

It was fun and it was from the start only planned for me to join them in the studio putting down some background vocals for the band. But they liked my voice so much that I joined and me and the male singer shared the vocals for a while before they chose to only have me by the microphone.

4 - Nightwish leader Tuomas Holopainen selected you for the band from about 2,000 candidates. What do you think was your big differential that made you choose it?

Very hard to say but probably my personality and voice. We clicked very well and that was important for them of course.

5 - Your first albumt with Nightwish in 2007, "Dark Passion Play", already begins with the super song The Poet and the Pendulum", one of the best in the band and where you had a wonderful performance, in the studio and especially live. Do you agree that in this song you had one of your best performances in the band? What other songs from this stage of your career would you highlight?

Thanks for such kind words first of all;-) I like the song a lot and it’s really nice but for me it’s not so special when it comes to my vocals. I believe there are other songs that were better although it is a nice song, but personally my favorites from that album are for instance Sahara, meadows of heaven and Eva. And one that didn’t make the album but is one of the best songs we ever did is Escapist. It really should had been in that album.

6 - Now let's start talking about The Dark Element, your band since 2016 ... On the first album, self-titled, we feel a certain similarity to the symphonic power metal you made in your Nightwish phase. What are the main similarities and dissimilarities that you would highlight?

Well it’s not made to be similar since Jani who makes the songs haven’t listened that much to nightwish. I believe it’s only some songs and elements that have similarities and then it’s that it’s symphonic music but one difference is that jani writes much catchier melodies and also uses 80s keys for instance. And the songs are less long and as I must say- easier to listen to. Also in nightwish the vocals were pushed back to sound like the other instruments and orchestra, whereas we in the dark element have the vocals up front and the main thing to be heard. I for one prefer it this way.

7 - The second album from The Dark Element is already lbeing made. Does it already have title al release date?

We have a date for the delivery of the master but not the set release date and no title yet.

8 - Can you advance any differences from this album over the first?

It’s in the same vain but also with some new elements and sounds. There will be surprises for sure.

9 - The band has performed around the world. Recently you played in Japan. How has the audience been reacting to the new songs?

They seemed to really like them and it felt great to see the crowds and their positive reactions.

10 - Can we have The Dark Element playing here in Brazil anytime soon?

We won’t tour and play live so much so we have to see but if we get good offers we might come over in the future.

Noted progressive metal vocalists Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X, ADRENALINE MOB) and Anette Olzon (THE DARK ELEMENT, ex-NIGHTWISH) will release a collaborative album in 2020.

The project — which will apparently be released under the moniker ALLEN/OLZON — is included in a short preview video of Frontiers Music Srl's 2020 releases. Amazon.de also currently lists an upcoming release titled "Worlds Apart", which features an advertised street date of March 6.

Since the end of her five-year stint with NIGHTWISH in 2012, Olzon released a solo album, 2014's "Shine", and formed THE DARK ELEMENT with former SONATA ARCTICA guitarist Jani Liimatainen. The group's self-titled debut album was released in 2017; a follow-up, "Songs The Night Sings", was released on November 8.

Over the past 14 years, Allen — best known as the front man of long-running progressive metal group SYMPHONY X — has released four acclaimed collaborative albums with Norwegian singer Jørn Lande (MASTERPLAN, AVANTASIA, JORN). The first three ALLEN/LANDE releases were produced and written by Swedish guitarist Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, STARBREAKER), with the fourth and most recent — 2014's "The Great Divide" — produced and written by former STRATOVARIUS guitarist Timo Tolkki.

Karlsson reunited with Allen to produce "Worlds Divide", as Frontiers posted a picture of the two together in May with the caption, "Magnus Karlsson and Russell Allen together again for a new, fantastic album. More news and details to follow soon!"

On Friday, December 20, Anette commented on the upcoming LP, writing on social media: "So this is my secret project I've hinted about. To make an album with such a great and versatile singer as Russell Allen is an honor for me, and to have Magnus Karlsson making the songs and playing is also an honor. Album out very soon and can't wait for 2020."

Hi all and the biggest of thanks to all of you for your lovely heartwarming comments and likes on my Amaranth a cappella video ❤️😘

Also wanted to update in here for those who doesn’t follow me in my Instagram that I am working hard on my second solo album. This album will be very different from Shine both in terms of the music style but also in my lyrics. This album will me harder and faster 😉👌

It won’t be as in Shine mostly lyrics about my life and my feelings- this time I write lyrics about other things. I have a co-producer who helps me with the music and songwriting.

Since we have done quite some songs already I’m entering the studio to do vocals for the first ones next weekend. I still have some months to finalize the whole album but since I also work full time as a nurse I want to be far ahead to avoid stressing the process👌🤟

That was a little update and I send all my love and thanks for being such amazing fans as you all are 💕

Hiding their intentions behind a respectable facade,” says Anette Olzon of the albums' first single. “Living in a world of a bit of chaos with a pandemic, crazy politics, violence, social media behavior and people venting their opinions upon others all the time is the foundation behind the idea of the lyrics for the album. Musically, I wanted a much heavier album, yet with strong melodies and took my inspiration from bands I like such as Dimmu Borgir and In Flames,” she continues.
This will be Anette's second solo album, following 2014's "Shine," and offers a harder, faster musical offering compared to the debut. More importantly, "Strong" stakes a claim for Anette’s well-deserved standing as one of the world's top female metal vocalists.
The music for "Strong" was written and composed together with acclaimed Swedish guitarist and producer Magnus Karlsson. Together, Anette and Magnus managed to create an outstanding collection of songs which showcase Anette’s enormous vocal range alongside Karlsson’s incendiary riffs. The songs are heavy, but still quite melodic and contemporary in their approach to the genre style. Additionally, "Strong" is mixed by Jacob Hansen (Pretty Maids, Volbeat, The Dark Element, etc.).
All in all, “Strong” is an album that masters the borders between heaviness and hookiness, all while showing an artist who doesn't rest on her laurels, but heads boldly into the future.

Hey all!
My week is busy with lectures online every day and at the same time practising vocals for the start of a new album this weekend: the album I’m recording will be a bit more challenging cause it’s very fast songs and they are not like the ones I have done before but I hope I’ll make them sound good and like mine in the end. Still a secret for what it is but a fun project!

It’s been a long 7 years since we’ve heard Anette Olzon release a solo album. However, a spark was clearly in the air, as she and her label both felt, around the same time, that it was time for a new release. We spoke to Anette on September 1st, 2021, about her upcoming album, “Strong,” and the songs therein, as well as a bit about nursing life and bullying. Watch the interview here, or read the transcript below…

Hello, we’re here with Anette Olzon today. How are you?

I’m fine. Thank you. It’s nice to talk to someone in Finland. It’s been a while.

How have these last few weird years been treating you? I heard you took up nursing?

It’s been quite busy. Since 2014, I started studying to be a registered nurse, and that took some years. At the same time, I tried to stay within singing, so Tähdet, Tähdet if you remember, and it made me get a little bit behind. So it took me, instead of three years to do nursing, it took me three and a half years. So then I’ve been working, of course, as a nurse for three years now.

I hope that’s not been too rough in the COVID times.

No, luckily I don’t work with COVID patients. Some of the nurses in my department had to go to a COVID [clinic], but thankfully the boss didn’t push me to do it. I didn’t want to so I’ve been with only normal patients.

It’s good that you get a choice in that.

Well, luckily someone else wanted to go.

Now you’ve got your second solo album coming out right away and as I understand, it’s been since 2014 since you’ve last done a proper solo release. What made you decide that now is the time to do another one?

I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I felt that I’ve been singing quite a lot now with THE DARK ELEMENT and other stuff and I felt that I had some thoughts in my head. At the same time, when I thought about it, the record label sent me an email that, “shouldn’t we do a solo?” and I was like, “Yeah, hey, I was just thinking the same.” And the timing was good, actually. I did have time for it, it was last spring with COVID, and actually it gave me a lot of inspiration, of course, with everything that happened in the world, and my father passed away in COVID. So it was a time of sadness and that is always good when you’re going to write a metal album with some serious matters. So I took inspiration from it all, you know, COVID and my father and the world, everything.

The last time, you worked with Johan Glössner and Stefan Örn. So what inspired you to work with Magnus Karlsson this time?

Actually, from the beginning, to be honest, the record label put me up with another guy; I don’t have to mention names, but it was a guy from another country. He started to send me some things, but I felt that it was hard for me to… we were not on the same page, so to say. So after some months, I sent the record label that, I need Magnus. And that was because I knew from “Allen/Olzon” that he can do good songs, and he lives close by to me, it’s one hour apart. He’s Swedish, which is much easier. I said that it’s either him or there’s no album, and I got him, and I’m very happy about that.

I just noticed that the names of your solo albums are both five letters that start with S and they’re both a very positive sounding word as well. Is that intentional? Or was that just a coincidence?

No, I didn’t think about it like that. Actually, you know, you always normally take the title of the album, normally from the singles or the single. That’s normal and I wanted “Strong” to be the first single, I didn’t get that, but it wasn’t my choice. And it is a COVID song, actually, but in a more positive… Of course, there are things in the lyrics, that you can lose your friends and such, but it is a story about being strong, that we should fight, and we all have to stay strong in this pandemic. So I thought “Strong.” Also the other titles are quite long, much longer. Maybe “Parasite” would have worked, but I also thought that I’m 50 years old this year when the album is coming out, and we get stronger with age, and a lot of things have happened in my life. So I actually feel really strong, so I thought it was really suitable.

You mentioned also in the past that “Shine” was a very personal album, with a lot of light and dark themes. Do you feel that “Strong” is similar, in a later, different part of your life? Or do you think it’s a really completely different atmosphere?

They are very different. When I started to write this album, and my husband, who is a metal guy, and… actually death metal, sorry. He said to me, “You can’t write these love things,” and they needed to be much darker and more serious matters. And I was like, “Oh, hell, what am I gonna write about?” Of course, there are some personal things, like my father’s passing is there, with a slow song. But instead, like in “Shine,” it was a lot about things around me. My bullying in school, when I was bullied, my mother’s cancer, and my son’s birth. It was all around me and that was what I needed to write about that time. But I’ve done that, so we have moved on, there’s not much to say.

So this album of course has some things about me, but more, it’s how I view the world. And then I mean from 2020. In the spring, what happened in the world, there was a lot of political stuff happening in other countries, the environment issues… the world is not in its best place, as I see it. There are things that are different from when I was a young kid, and I have children. So of course, when you’re 50 and have young children and [you’re] older, you think about what are we going to leave to them.

Also, there are some things about me. Like, “Catcher of My Dreams” is about my nightmares and that I have night terrors. I’ve had night frights – as you say – I’ve had it since I was a very young child, I wake up and I’m paralyzed. And this is something I still have, but more in stressful times, but it’s really horrible. So then I thought that I would write a song about that. So of course, there are some songs, but not as personal as “Shine.” Maybe two or three songs are more from me.

Do you find that there’s any… well, I guess you kind of already mentioned that if there’s a general theme, it’s about strength, perseverance, survival, that sort of thing?

Yeah, if you listen to some of the songs that are… they can be felt as negative and such, there’s still a message in them, that we can do something and you can do something and you can change your situation. Like in “Sick of You,” it’s about an abusive relationship. It’s not something from my own life, but I see others around me, we see it all the time, especially now in COVID, with the women who are beaten and actually killed, and a lot of it has to do with the pandemic. So that was also something I saw and I wanted to write the song about how she now – or he, but more she – has put up with all this shit for many years. Now she’s tossing him out, and I think that is strong. I hope a lot of women that may listen to the song can get the courage to get out of that kind of relationship, because it is very abusive, and it can also be, not physical but mental abuse, you know that someone is pushing you down. “Catcher of My Dreams” actually is also positive because you talk about someone who’s catching your dreams. For me, my husband is my catcher. I can turn to him in the night when I’m scared and he can comfort me.

You already just answered a bunch of these, but you were talking about some of the stories from the songs and I was going to ask about some of my favorites, like “I Need to Stay,” which is a surprisingly epic song. Is there anything interesting about that one that you can tell?

Well, that is also something that has to do with COVID and my father’s passing. When I wrote it, he had passed. And to be honest, me and my father, we didn’t always have a good relationship. He wasn’t the best father for me all the time, which is very sad. But this song is about that kind of thing. I thought about him, how he might have thought, before he passed away, that some things that you have said, maybe to your child or children, sometime in the life, like “I don’t want you” or, you know, some parents say that, “when you came, my life felt really hard” or something. They didn’t want their children. And I know people that have heard that too, not only me. This is like when that parent then knows that death is coming, you’re not going to stay here for long, and maybe you feel that you need to have time to say that, I didn’t mean that. Because normally, I don’t think you mean that. And I’m sorry. So for me, it’s a very serious song. And it is epic, and it should be, because it’s like… I need to be able to say this, I need to change what I did before I die. So for me, it’s a very sad song.

I love the dynamics in it, because it’s very, very passionate, very powerful as well, but still you there is a kind of melancholic subject.

Yeah, it is very sad if you know the [story] behind it.

So what was the creative process like for this release? Did you start with lyrical ideas or melodies or did Magnus start first? How did you guys collaborate?

It was very different [depending on] which song it was. “Fantastic Fanatic,” I got it in my head and started singing it in the bathtub one evening. I had the whole idea in my head with the verse and the chorus and the subject. It’s something that I wanted to write for a long time, because I have Facebook, I have Instagram, and mainly Facebook, I don’t write so much… but I do read what people say. I think sometimes people vent things, they’re like, you shouldn’t eat meat, I’m a vegan, you should do like me, you know, and I don’t have anything against people that have an opinion and how they want to live, but I do get disturbed when people tell me how to live my life. Also the environment is really something we need to think about. But a lot of people on Instagram, for instance, like influencers and such, they say they are so environment friendly and then they sit in the airplane six times a year going to get some photos, you know, and I’m sorry, but I get quite irritated. I don’t want to vent on Facebook, so instead I wrote a song. So that was my idea [laughs]. But also there’s been… I said to Magnus, “I want to do a song and this kind of…” like, I like FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, so “Strong” is actually a bit from that kind of music style. “I want this kind of song,” and then he starts to do something and then I do the lyrics, and some ideas have been from him, that he sent me music, no melody or anything, just the music piece, verse, and chorus. “Do you like this?” And then I can say, “Yeah, but I want faster drums there,” so it’s been very different. We haven’t met, we just do it by internet and files. So it’s been working very easy, very easily.

It’s incredible to think that if this pandemic had hit 10-20 years ago, so many albums wouldn’t have happened because of that.

That’s the thing. You don’t have to see each other, which is of course nice. When you had bands when I was younger, 20 years old, you met in the studio, you made all the songs together, you record it together, you were like, whoa, and that’s fun too, but it’s a very efficient way to make music, this kind of way.

I noticed, as I mentioned briefly, there are quite big stylistic differences between this album and your last solo album, which was kind of more pretty and folky, almost a little more acoustic, and this is much more heavy metal. So how did that turn out? Was it meant to be different from the start or did it just kind of come out that way?

For me, “Shine” and “Strong” don’t have anything to do with each other. First of all, it’s been so many years between them, it’s a different label, and I did “Shine” when I was in NIGHTWISH. I couldn’t like, do a metal album, it didn’t feel okay to compete with NIGHTWISH. I actually did this like a hobby album when I had time. So I have never had the intention to do a second “Shine.” That was what I did then and now, when I wanted to do an album, of course, I also know that I have fans that really are more into metal and symphonic metal and that kind of style. And also, I sing that mostly now and I like it a lot. So I wanted to do a metal album, just like, now I can do whatever I want and I want to do a metal album. Yeah, that’s what I did.

Those were my main questions about the album itself, but is there anything else interesting or exciting about it that I didn’t ask about, that you wanted to share?

I’ve already released three songs and I’ve gotten a lot of good responses. A lot of people like the songs and they say that it’s, you know, metal but still very melodic, and they say a lot of ABBA metal, which is always what I want to do, you know, I like ABBA. I just hope that those that are going to buy it and listen, know that this is written from the heart, with the style I like, and I’ve implemented growls because I really like that, and I hope they like it. So they will like… two or three more albums, of course [laughs].

I love the addition of the growls, I thought that was really nice detail to add a little flavor in there.

Yeah and I think this time, it’s my husband who growls, and I said that I wanted like, one song, and then we took another song, and then we were up to six songs, and I could have done it in all the songs, but he said, “Nah, you cannot have it in all the songs.” We also did just tiny parts. Also, it was because the record label that I am in has, from what I know, never released anything with growls, so I didn’t know if they would allow it. But now I know that people like it and it’s working. So the next album will [have] a little bit more in all the songs, you can put it in more parts than just a small part. But that was like a trial. You have to try things.

It’s hard to imagine this would have been your first time collaborating with your husband, but what was it like for this album?

We have been working together before, because he’s a bass player, so he’s been playing with me live with “Shine” and acoustically too. We’re a good team. He has helped me a lot with some lyrics too, he is really good at English, he has been living there, and such. So no, but I didn’t actually know how he would sound growling because I’ve only heard some records he’d done when he was very young. So I just sent him to this studio and said, “Yeah, hopefully we’ll be okay.” Actually, I was surprised. I think he sounded really aggressive and cool and I’m really proud of him.

Incredible. I love to see the odd little family collaboration here and there.

You know, I have children that are really talented. So maybe in the next album, I will have Nemo and Mio join me actually, because they are both playing instruments and singing a lot.

You could eventually have a whole heavy metal Von Trapp family.

Yeah, of course. Some of the kids actually like hip-hop more, but you’ll see [laughs]. That’s what kids these kids listen to today, you know? Hip-hop and stuff.

My other kind of main question that I wanted to ask as we wrap this up is… you mentioned that you’ve been bullied a lot, and I’ve been hearing a lot about a lot of artists standing up against bullying lately, and especially hearing a lot of more stories about even artists themselves getting actively bullied. You know, there’s a lot of haters out there on the internet. Do you have any just… straight-up advice for people who are getting bullied?

Well, I have been bullied in my childhood and actually, not so many years ago, in my adult life, I was a nurse student and I came to a department to do my internship, and they bullied me, and I was actually at the same time in the local magazine, a big story about “Shine” or something, I don’t remember. So I was kind of in the focus, and I think this was jealousy. You never know, I hadn’t done anything and actually, they bullied me so hard that I cried every day. I went home and I’m like, you know, 47 years old and it was like being back in school, and I hadn’t done anything. Like in school, it’s nothing about you.

All I can say is that [you] should know that it’s never about you. It can be jealousy, it can be that they have a boring life, I don’t know. And haters on the internet, too, they still hate on me and still write horrible things to me, like “you suck.” I get those messages all the time, on my Instagram. So what I didn’t do, was stand up for myself in my childhood. It took me many years before I actually took that one girl, who was the worst, and yeah… you know, I took her aside, then I gave her a lot of beating actually [laughs], that was not a thing I do, but that made it stop. I’m not saying you should do that, but you really need to go to the principal, to the teachers, you have to call the police. Here in Sweden, you can go to the police because it can be a felony to bully someone. If you’re an adult and you’re bullied in your workspace, just quit. If you have a boss bullying you – that also happens – just quit. And the haters on the internet, I mean, don’t answer them. Don’t give them your energy, block them. I block every one, a single comment, it can be sexual, I block them. I block them instantly. I don’t read YouTube [laughter]. If I did, I would be crying every day. No, but it’s horrible and I think people who are bullying others, either as children or… it’s even more horrible when you’re an adult, because you should know better. But if you just look at Facebook, you see them, it’s like… they can be my age and bullying children. So it’s horrible. Yeah, but you have to go to someone and you have to not just let it be, because they will not quit.

Thank you very much for that! Is there anything else you’d like to say before I let you get back to your studies?

Actually, I have one more interview with Finland. But no, I just want to say that I miss Finland. I hope I can come back to Finland soon. It’s been a long time now. We actually lived in Finland for many weeks, so we felt a bit like we were Finnish. I hope I can be there again and I hope that everyone would like my album. That’s what I hope for.

Well, we hope we get to see you do some shows one way or another soon. And thank you so much.

Thank you and have a really nice day.
