Sharon Corr surprises Liverpool ONe shoppers as she Tickles the Ivories
by Dawn Collinson, Liverpool Echo | Aug 25 2011

SHOPPERS in Liverpool One listening to the Tickle The Ivories piano festival got a celeb surprise when one of the talented pianists turned out to be none other than worldwide chart-topping star Sharon Corr.

The Irish beauty, better known for her violin skills, decided to play a few songs while she was in town for a gig at the O2 Academy.

Sharon, one quarter of family band The Corrs, has released a solo album this year and decided there was nowhere better to start the tour than in Liverpool, persuading her manager to fit the city in to the schedule.

She tells Insider: "I love the city so much and haven't been for so long. The last time I performed here was with The Corrs as part of the Summer Pops festival, which was a long time ago, so when I got the chance to come here again I couldn't wait."

It seems she was determined to make the most of her stay, as Insider’s spy spotted her on a shopping trip around Liverpool One at Waterstones, New Look and HMV.

She then relaxed with a coffee at Caffe Nero before spotting the piano festival, where she treated passers-by to an impromptu mini concert before heading back to the Radisson Blu hotel.

Celebrities offer support to suicide awareness group
By Jennifer Hough
Saturday, September 03, 2011
MUSICIAN Sharon Corr and presidential candidate Michael D Higgins have teamed up with suicide charity Console to launch a series of events in its bid to stop suicide and break taboo around mental health.
The events, including a conference on September 9, will coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

Speaking at the launch, Ms Corr said if people cannot see a way out, they have no hope.

"Hope is what makes you put your feet on the floor and get out of bed every morning, and when you have depression — hope dies.

"When we have a physical illness no one bats an eyelid, and yet mental illness is just the same — an illness. Why do we separate the head from the body?"

Mr Higgins said the issue of suicide, especially among young men, needs urgent attention.

"In this climate — more than ever — we need to be aware of those around us who are struggling and may need some help.

"I welcome the Console conference and the wider discussion that will follow and I think it is a positive way to mark World Suicide Prevention Day."

"We need to build a truly inclusive society with support for the dignity and participation of every person. No one should suffer the effects of exclusion and isolation."

The conference will be opened by President Mary McAleese and addressed by Health Minister James Reilly.

International experts will attend and a provocative presentation on the approach to male suicide is expected from Dr Harry Barry.

On Monday evening, the 3Ts charity — Turn the Tide of Suicide — will hold a candlelight vigil in Dublin city centre.

Sharon Corr, Friday, Electric Arena

Atmosphere:  Mellow. Very, very mellow. When Shaz came on stage there was maybe 100 people in the crowd. By the end her audience had swelled to three times that number but by any definition it was still very low key.

High:  She played some of her own tunes including new single Over It  which were pleasingly poppy but will she ever escape the legacy of the Corrs? It seems unlikely. Certainly the biggest cheers of the evening were reserved for songs such as Radio  and the Fleetwood Mac cover Dreams . The other high point came when she was joined on stage by brother Jim for a frenetic version of Puff The Magic Dragon . Or maybe we just dreamt that.

Low:  The bloke at the front shouting 'Sharon. Up the Town!'

Quote:  There's two fellas up the front who've just shown me their chests. Not unusual at a festival I suppose but one chest says Sha and the other says Ron. I like it guys!

Verdict:  if you like this sort of thing...

Sharon Corr Gone Solo
Posted: September 2, 2011

Sharon Corr is most probably well known by most as one of those ‘fit birds’ from the band The Corrs, or one of three sisters in a band called The Corrs, as well as known as being in a band with all her siblings… called The Corrs who just so happened to sell 30 million records worldwide! Also, the fact The Corrs have been in hybernation for 5 years and put on hold for various reasons could also be associated with Sharon… So it could be easily seen why Sharon would want to pave and carve a solo name and career for herself! Most people will probably wonder why out of all 4 of The Corrs it is Sharon the violinist who has come back to the fore front of Celtic ballads and pop songs with an Irish twist… This she has set out to achieve embarking on a solo tour in which is showcasing all over the world from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and all round Europe of her own and re – releasing her debut solo album ‘Dream Of You’ with bonus tracks. Already her footsteps are being planted around the world and very well done I may add. Not only is she defining a genre, but helping a country who is in financial difficulty, but she is helping to create opportunities for other female artists to follow suit or to encourage more artists who make Celtic music to come forward and have a go!

So lets talk album… the album consists of 14 tracks, 2 covers including: Bronski Beats – Small Town Boy and as Sharon Says herself “isn’t a huge departure from The Corrs”. However, the tracks are like soothing lullabys, celtic classic harmonies and Sharon’s talented vocals shine through on tracks such as ‘Over it’ and ‘So Long Ago’ … and least not to mention her note strikingly violin playing throughout the whole solid first solo album that Sharon has created and should be proud of! On the track ‘Wedding Day’ can be heard haunting CelticViolins that could of featured in Highlander easily. As well as the odd pop catchy 3 minute classic can be found in ‘Dream of You’ throughout the LP. Be prepared to be surprised as she does throw in a surprise or to such as a little Country number ’Love Me Better’ and my fave of the album and the most goose pimply (due to Sharon’s Luscious voice) is… ‘Real World’. The album is fluffy and warm but makes a change from swearing, screaming, loud bass and cheesy pop songs! It is a pleasant sound upon the ears without boring you!

The only thing I would say about the first attempt of a solo album is it could of been a little bit more grittier in terms of a bit more bass and not so much tin whistle but saying that would be like asking Sharon to fill in for The Edge (U2) if he was sick and they needed a fill in at a Rock festival! However, the album gets an 8 out of 10 from me and is nice to have Sharon back on the scene as well as more Celtic music in the charts…

I managed to catch up with the Song Seamstress via Telephone before her gig in Aberdeen and had a chat about the new album as well as touring, The Corrs, Twitter and being a judge for Blossom Hill!
