Hey chicos!

Gracias Wll!
No estoy segura de si ustedes lo saben todavía, pero voy a tocar en el Tonight Show el 13 de octubre. Tim estará allí conmigo.
Espero que disfruten la canción, no puedo esperar a escuchar lo que piensan!
amor,
Amy

Evanescence Recording New Album, Plotting Summer Tour

Courtesy of Billboard:

After just over three weeks in the studio in New York, Evanescence's Amy Lee says she feels "like I'm making the best album of my life."

"I know that seems weird to say, but I wouldn't be here in the studio making another record if I didn't think it was going to be better than anything I've ever done," Lee -- who came to fame with Evanescence's seven-times platinum 2003 debut "Fallen" and continued with 2006's double-platinum "The Open Door" -- tells Billboard.com. "I feel like so much has already happened. I don't even know where to begin to try to describe it...'cause it's just so many things at once. I'm really excited."

Lee began writing for the as-yet untitled album -- which is due for a fall release, with a first single out in the summer and a tour to follow -- more than a year ago, then accelerated the process when she began working with percussionist and producer Will "Science" Hunt (not to be confused with Evanescence drummer Will Hunt), who's been her chief collaborator on the new songs. The result, Lee says, is "a lot of electronic influence -- industrial is a better word for it," but she promises it's not going to be a wholesale reinvention of the Evanescence sound.

"It wouldn't be an Evanescence album if it didn't sound somewhat like Evanescence," explains Lee, who's incorporating the harp, which she learned to play between albums, in several of the new songs. "I feel like our band has always had programming and inspirations from Bjork and Depeche Mode and Massive Attack and that kind of thing. It's not like we're making one of those records; it's just, like, that is playing a bigger role in the sound of Evanescence this time. Those little nuances and hints come in in ways that are cool. The sound that we're going for as a group is to fuse synthetic instruments with organic instruments and create something that sounds like a whole new place. It just sounds larger than life."

Lee says the group -- which also includes guitarist Terry Balsamo and bassist Tim McCord -- and producer Steve Lillywhite are currently recording about 16 songs and is "still working and...finishing writing here and there. Some of them aren't finished lyric-wise or writing-wise, but I really feel like it's mostly there." Some of the songs, Lee acknowledges, are compositions for potential film projects that weren't used.

Lee confesses to being a bit apprehensive after the long gap since "The Open Door," but she says a pair of one-off shows during November in New York and Brazil gave her confidence that Evanescence's following is still intact. "I was really nervous 'cause it had been so long," she says, "but it was amazing to see how many fans there still are that are waiting for us after all this time. It's really inspiring, and it makes me excited to show them how much we've grown."

Lee is, not surprisingly, less excited to talk about We Are The Fallen, the group formed by Evanescence co-founder Ben Lee and other former members -- John LeCompt and Rocky Gray -- whose debut album comes out in May. "It just doesn't have anything to do with me or Evanescence," she notes. "The only thing that bothers me about it, really, is I keep hearing...about 'the original members.' The only original members of Evanescence are me and Ben; John and Rocky came into the band after we'd already recorded "Fallen," so there's a lot of years there...that didn't include anybody but Ben and I. Other than that, I don't have an opinion or anything to say about it."

The key word for goth-pop outfit Evanescence's long-awaited comeback album, due this fall, is a bit unexpected. It's not "angsty" or "ominous" or "heavy."

"The record is fun — and that's a totally new thing for us," singer Amy Lee, 29, tells SPIN. "When I listen to our old music I see that's where I was in my life at that time. This has been a long trip and parts have been hard. But it's about not taking everything so seriously this time."

Since starting out in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1995, the band has been defined by drama, both onstage and off. There was the messy departure of co-founding songwriter Ben Moody in 2003 and then the even messier firing of drummer Rocky Gray and guitarist John LeComp in 2007, leading to rumors that Lee was iron-fisted in her leadership of the band, which, by then, consisted almost entirely of newly-hired hands. In fact, more than 10 different musicians have played in Evanescence; Lee is the only constant.

Last spring, after a much-needed break following the release of their second album, 2006's five-million-selling The Open Door, Evanescence entered a New York City studio with production vet Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones) to record a collection of experimental, electro-leaning songs that Lee then told SPIN were influenced by Massive Attack and Portishead. Then the problems started… again.

"It wasn't coming together right," Lee says. "Steve wasn't the right fit. We were on this experimental trip, trying a bunch of new things, seeing what would fit. I did a lot of the writing without the band. And then when we tried to pull the two worlds together, it wasn't working."

Evanescence stopped the sessions, and for a time their future was uncertain. Lee says she "didn't know what was going to happen, if we were going to be making a record again."

Then Evanescence, the group of hired guns led by the vision of Lee, became a real working band. Lee, guitarist Terry Balsamo, bassist Tim McCord, drummer Will Hunt, and programmer Will "Science" Hunt (yes, both guys share the same name) moved in with Lee and began re-working her songs and writing new material together.

"I've never felt so supported by my band members," says Lee. "We've really relied on each other. And everyone being a part of this album, from the ground up, is an entirely new approach for us. There's nobody that's just coming in to play guitar. Everybody's invested. We're more truly a band now than ever before."

She adds, "We took the best songs we had, added more, and reworked them as a group. They're stronger than before… when it was more one-dimensional."

With 19 tunes, the band reentered the studio this month, but this time with rock producer Nick Rasculinecz. "My favorite records that came out recently were from Alice in Chains and the Deftones -- and he produced both," says Lee. "We love working with him -- he makes it so fun.

"Writing with the band and working with a heavy rock producer has made it more of a rock record," she says. "It's Evanescence, but with all these new sounds," including synths and vintage keyboards like the Moog Taurus Pedal.

Lee wrote a handful of the new tracks on harp, including the ballad "Secret Door" and "My Heart is Broken." Another track, "Oceans," "starts with a big, low synth and a vocal, then the band kicks in," says Lee. "It's big and lush. We've been having a lot of fun playing that one especially."

There are a variety of lyrical subjects on the album. "I get inspired by nature," says Lee. "The ocean's been a theme. Brokenness has become a little bit of theme, without necessarily offering a solution."

She adds: "Life can be tough sometimes. But I think it just starts with admitting, 'Okay, the world's not perfect, how do we live our lives within that and not be miserable?'

"There was some real struggle trying to figure out what I want this band to be. I want Evanescence to feel passionate. It's about looking for the answers and not always knowing them."

Wind-up Records ha confirmado que el nuevo álbum de Evanescence se publicará el 11 de octubre de este 2011. La banda ha anunciado tambiíén el regreso del guitarrista Troy Mclawhorn.

When Amy Lee invited Rolling Stone to her Brooklyn home last month, she wasn't sure which would come first: the War Story soundtrack she'd been working on for nearly a year, or the baby she was expecting with husband Josh Hartzler.

Turns out her son, Jack Lion Hartzler, won by a little more than a week.

Lee became a mom on July 28; on August 6, she announced Aftermath, an album of music she'd recorded for War Story with cellist Dave Eggar and a host of other musicians. It's due August 25, and it's not only Lee's first release since Evanescence's 2011 self-titled effort, it's her first as an independent artist…the end result of a lawsuit she filed with the band's former label, Wind-Up Records.

In this exclusive interview, the newly liberated Lee discusses motherhood, declares her independence and details the future of Evanescence.

You spent nearly a year working on War Story. How was the experience different from making an Evanescence record?

This process was unique even for the film industry because it was super indie. [Dave and I] had a relationship with the director Mark [Jackson], and he'd come over and listen to stuff and tell us if we were on the right track, and we'd jam and we'd feed off of each other's work. It was a really cool starting-off point; it's different than going "How do I want to express myself on my new album?" He'd provide this framework, a map, of "OK, I want you to make the listener feel these certain ranges of emotion, make the character feel broken or feel isolated." You have these starting off points, and it's cool because it forces you to write differently. I felt like I was exercising a different part of my brain.

How would you describe the film?

For me it's very dark. We're calling the album Aftermath in part because film itself is about the aftermath, it's not about the war. It's called War Story, but you never see any war. It's about the aftermath of her dealing with the tragedy that she's witnessed. And then the album is us playing with the aftermath of doing all that music. Probably half of the music isn't in the film, we're just working in this big, black open playing field. And I hope you can listen to it and feel that.

What was it about this project that appealed to you?

I've always wanted to do a score, it's just hard to find the right opportunity when I have this baggage of already having this known persona. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining and I don't view it as anything but positive, but when anybody wants to use me, they just think of me as either a rock singer or a goth singer, but I do a lot more than sing! It's hard to go "I want less, I don't want to be the center of attention, let me show you what I can do as a programmer and producer and arranger. " You know, rather than me coming in and singing the title track. So it was hard to find the right gig, but this has been it.

Do you feel that you are defined by your past?

Personally? Not at all. I don't feel like I'm two separate people. I never felt like I was playing a role, you just change. It's funny, people still talk about "My Immortal," and it's wonderful, it's so cool, but I was like 14 or 15 when that was happening. When I wrote "Bring Me to Life" I was 19 [laughs]. Imagine the things that you thought and the way that you spoke and things that you did when you were 19 years old. Even the way that you process relationships and everything, it grows from there. I'm a lot more mature and complex and I have a lot more to say.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit there's stuff on Fallen or the one we did before that, Origin, that makes me cringe. It's embarrassing. Mainly the lyrical content, oh my God, it's like my old diary. But I can embrace that innocence because I'll never have that again, it's special.

Earlier this year, you settled your lawsuit with Wind-Up Records. What can you tell us about the factors that led to legal action?

I can't say anything negative; I had to sign a non-disclosure, so that's the only way in any sense that I'm still bound. There's always frustrations when you're not in complete control of your project. Everything's a collaboration, like, really it is, even this project, we had someone to please, something we needed to work towards, somebody who needed to like it before it worked. But, what's been different about this project is how it was such a creative process…the director was a creative person, he wanted us to be as weird and creative as possible, let us do things our own way and respected and appreciated that. Instead of having a set plan that a million people have done before and try to force us down that path.

What were the ramifications of the settlement?

Everything's still the same for me; it's not like I no longer get paid any money when someone buys Fallen, but they sold it to somebody else. My back catalog is owned by this company Bicycle-Concord, and they're great, so there's nothing different there. But my future is mine, so anything I do from here forward is up to me, and it's awesome.

So what does all of this mean for Evanescence?

The situation is we're not doing it now. I don't like to make predictions about the future, because I'm honestly open-minded, and I would never want to say I'm done with any of it, because it's a huge part of me. I've loved my time with Evanescence, I wouldn't want to just throw it away, but, for the foreseeable future, I don't have any plans to do anything with the band. It's really important to me to take some time to show some different sides of myself.

I've said this all the way through Evanescence, especially on the second and third record: "I have the freedom to express myself completely within the band, so why would I want to do anything else?" And that's true only to an extent, because as much as I could go through a range of emotions, there's a certain expectation there. With the fans, with myself, I know what Evanescence is; it's an entity, it's bigger than just myself, which is awesome, but I can write a song and go "That is or isn't an Evanescence song," and they both happen. So there does need to be other outlets for me to make music.

You've started a family in New York, did that impact the band?

That's really nothing new; we've always lived all over the place. I wasn't any nearer to them when I lived in L.A. I still talk to them and we listen to each other's stuff; Troy [McLawhorn]'s working on something cool that I listened to the other day. I keep in the most touch with Tim [McCord] and Troy, but they're not here, we're all over the place, in different cities.

You seem firmly entrenched in New York City.

I love it here. I've lived in so many places, but this is the first place since I was a little girl in south Florida that feels like home, where I don't feel like I'm different from everyone around me. We have a good community here, a lot of great musicians. Everything's available here, nothing is too out of the ordinary and there's music everywhere. I get inspired all the time just walking down the street. I feel like I live in such an artistic place, and that's really cool. I take the subway all the time, and I don't have a car. I can just zombie walk to the steps and get on the train.

How has the idea of motherhood changed your view on the world?

I don't know where to begin. I'm mostly just excited because as you get older, it's not that there's not beautiful things around you, you've just seen a lot. You get to the point where you feel like you've had all of your first experiences, but I'm really looking forward to experiencing those things again like it's my first time, through my kids mind.

Has it changed your view on what you do professionally?

Yeah. I'm an artist, I'm never going to stop being me and I don't think I could ever stop making music. You don't change that much; I'm still going to be me and life is just going to be enriched and fuller and busier. But I do think that the days of living on the road and an album cycle be this giant daunting thing of working in the studio for six months then going on the road for a year or two, they're behind me. And it's not just being a mother, I just don't want to live on the road. I have the ability to just make something and put it out and it doesn't have to be 12 songs. It doesn't have to be a complete album, like the old-fashioned model. It's cool to think about things in a new way. I just wrote a really cool thing, so how can I just give it to the fans right now? It doesn't have to be a huge, daunting thing.

It seems like you're willing to sacrifice commercial gain for happiness.

Oh, I have been for a long time. I guess like I'm not like everyone else. Even the music that I gravitate towards…I'm not listening to the most popular thing. I guess that's always been me. I put a lot of value in great work, great music, things that really touch me. So much more than success or fame on a monetary level. Always have.

To that end, what do you hope to accomplish with Aftermath?

Honestly, it's going to sound weird, but I'm just looking forward to sharing it with the world. It's that simple. I don't have huge expectations, because it's an unusual project. Anytime I release something new, it feels really good, and I know I have supporters out there that will like something about it. I'm excited about "Lockdown." I'm excited to hear what the fans think about that, and I'm excited about "Push the Button," and I'm excited about all the score music, for my fans, and to show people something that they've never heard before.

We have big news to share.
After 2 albums, countless adventures around the world and on the stage, Terry's time with Evanescence has come to an end. As difficult as that is, we stand unified knowing it's the right thing for all of us. We will ALWAYS love you, Terry, and wish you all the happiness, health, and love in the world!
Now for the exciting part of this announcement: Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jen Majura.
After scouring the globe, I found Evanescence's missing piece in South Germany. She plays like a supervillan, sings like an angel, and laughs like a great friend. We spent a few days together last week in New York sharing eerily familiar life stories, sushi, artistic inspiration, other people's shoes, and SO many laughs! (Yeah, okay, and maybe there were a couple of stiff drinks mixed in there)

We are all so excited to play together this fall and bring the show to a whole new level. CAN'T WAIT! I know you will show her all the love and respect a strong, talented woman deserves. I couldn't be happier to welcome our new sister to the band.
P.S. This is the time to be shouting out setlist requests, we're working on it now  Anything is possible! So bring it!!!

When Amy Lee, the frontwoman of the rock-metal band Evanescence, announced that their guitarist was replaced by the woman, it was a big surprise for Ev's fans. But with help of Jen Majura and her guitar skills this group certainly is not going to be softer. In a special interview the new guitarist is talking about her musical experience, inspirations and her free time, which actually does not exist. Meet Jen Majura - the master of guitar and the new member of Evanescence!

On 7 August you were announced as the new guitarist of the rock-metal band Evanescence. How did your friendship with Amy Lee start and when did she ask you to join the group?

I received an email of the management, asking if I would be interested in working with Ev. I stopped breathing for some minutes until my face turned blue hahaha. Few days later I was on the plane to New York, to get to know Amy.

According to your website, you made your first musical steps at the age of six, but I think you became the master of guitar few years later. What made you fall in love with the guitar and how can you encourage others to play?

I knew that I wanted to become a musician in my very early years and started first out on the piano at the age of 4. When I was 8 years old I was impressed by Bon Jovi’s guitarist Richie Sambora, later Nuno Bettencourt who I still consider as one of the greatest guitarists alive. I started to listen to music of Steve Vai and started practicing Richie Kotzen and Steve Lukather skills on my instrument for hours and hours, while my school friends were playing football or listened to boybands hahaha. I think the best advice for young musicians is to really spend time with their instrument, it is importnant to sometimes get away from all that Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and social media white noise that is just deafening you and focus on music and your instrument.

Not only are you a great guitarist, but also you are very talented singer. In 2014 you released your self-titled solo album, which is very personal and powerful. What are your greatest musical inspirations? Is there a chance for your duet with Amy Lee in the future?

Thank you very much. It took me approximately 1 year to finish the songwriting of my solo album, which for me was a kind of therapy to process with a lot of things that have happened in my life. Each song means a lot to me as it is connected to a story or part of my personal life. We recorded it in summer 2013 at Gernhart Studios in Germany, I was blessed to have some good friends joining my album for guest solo appearances (Tobias Kersting from Orden Ogan, Manni Schmidt from Refuge, Marco Wriedt from 21Octayne and many more) The album was produced by me, Dennis Hormes (who also did a lot of great solo work on the album) and Martin Buchwalter (Perzonal War). I am definitely looking forward to record material for my second solo album, as soon as I will find the time to do that. In concerns to Ev we will see what the future holds for all of us. I’m very excited, happy, honored and thankful.

Apart from Evanescence you are a member of AC/DC cover band called Blackthunder Ladies and in 2014 you joined viking metal band Equilibrium. Is it difficult for you to be involved in so many musical projects? Are you afraid that your career in Evanescence will force you to resign from some of them?

I quit the project BTL in the beginning of this year. In Knorkator I am a guest guitarist, which means they are performing shows without me anyway and there will absolutely be no problems in continuing work and live performances with them. We are friends, have high respect for each other and worship each other’s work. In Equilibrium I will stay of course, as long as nobody wants me to leave the band.

As I have said, you are very very busy now, but I guess you manage to relax and rest from music for a while. What are your favourite ways of spending free time?

I am a bad ass workaholic, so if I do not “work” which is teaching, practicing, doing clinics and workshops for my companies Ibanez and Engl, performing live concerts, composing or spending time in the insanity of social media network jungle etc. I’d probably… sleep …hahahahaha

In November Evanescence is going to make a huge comeback - three concerts in the US and one in Japan. Rumour has it that these events are connected with the band's 20th anniversary. Can you reveal something more about the concerts? Will we finally hear the new material from the group?

As much as I would love to, but sorry… no, can’t say anything about that yet.

Thank you very much for the interview.

You are very welcome.

EVANESCENCE's Amy Lee spoke to Australia's News.com.au about her decision to re-record the band's old material with a full orchestra and heavy electronics for the "Synthesis" album. The disc, which is due on November 10, includes a re-imagining of the group's breakthrough 2003 hit "Bring Me To Life" without the guest rap by vocalist Paul McCoy.

"God bless the rap, it's part of what got us on the radio, I guess," Lee said. "At least according to all the rules of radio that I don't agree with or understand. The rap wasn't part of our original idea or sound, it was a compromise in many ways. So to be able to go back to the original vision for the song was great."

According to Amy, "The recording of a song that ends being the one you hear the most through history is usually when the song was just freshly written. You're still learning it yourself and getting used to what the notes are and how the parts go," she said. "That's true for 'Bring Me To Life', for sure. After doing it live for so long, there's different vocal choices I've made and different things we got to use in this version."

Fourteen years after "Bring Me To Life" was released, Lee says she "forgets" the rap's there in the original version of the song. "At the time it was a big issue, it was our first single," she said. "I wanted people to understand who we were. That's a struggle you always fight as an artist. If we only had the one hit, if no one ever heard from us again, then nobody would understand who we were. We've made it past that point, so the rap doesn't make me angry anymore. I'm so glad to put a new version out there without the rap, though."

"Synthesis" features full orchestration in a completely synthetic world of beats and sounds, with help from arranger and composer David Campbell. The disc contains two new EVANESCENCE songs in addition to fan favorites re-recorded with a live orchestra and electronica.

"Synthesis" includes a guest performance by famed violinist Lindsey Stirling on "Hi-Lo", one of the new tracks on the album.

Beyond the Boys’ Club is a monthly column from journalist and radio host Anne Erickson, focusing on women in rock and metal music, as they offer their perspectives on the music industry and discuss their personal experiences. This month’s piece features an interview with Amy Lee of Evanescence.

There’s no denying that Evanescence were a game changer. When Amy Lee and company came on the scene in the early 2000s, it was a time when mainstream and active rock radio had nothing but male artists on the charts. Evanescence found themselves an anomaly alongside bands such as Limp Bizkit, Creed, and others on the active-rock radio airwaves.

Fast-forward to today, and mainstream rock radio plays a bevy of female-fronted bands, from In This Moment to Halestorm to The Pretty Reckless.

It’s safe to say Evanescence played a large part in mainstream-rock radio opening its mind to playing a female voice on the airwaves, although Lee is humble about it.

“It’s hard to really take credit, because for me, there were a lot of women that came before me,” Lee tells Heavy Consequence. “There’s Shirley Manson — there were some powerful women in my sphere in the ‘90s and the alternative era that we’re killing it. Gwen Stefani, too.”

“It’s not like I was the first-first, but to go into that active-rock space and be able to break through like we did, I did see that it was special.”

Lee spoke with Heavy Consequence for the latest Beyond the Boys’ Club column, discussing the obstacles she faced early on in her career,  the rise of women in hard rock and metal over the years, her recent experience touring with a full orchestra, new Evanescence music, and more. Read the full interview below.
On Evanescence being a breakout act for women on active-rock radio in the early 2000s

I love that it came across that way — like a victory for a female to break through, because it did feel like that, but it was a big struggle there in the end. I always thought that me being a frontwoman of our band and being in that sort of genre was a huge bonus, because it made us unique. All of the people that I loved and artists that I grew up loving were totally unique. They had a sound that nobody else had. I loved people that were doing something that when you heard them, you knew exactly who it was. That’s what I wanted. So, for me, anything about us that was special or unique, like having a woman’s voice on top of aggressive rock music, was a cool plus.

When it came time to record, I thought we were all on the same page, and we weren’t. When I came down to record and get a marketing plan and think about what’s going to happen on radio, all of a sudden, there was this big problem. That uniqueness that I’d always thought was so cool was seen as a problem by the people around us. The most giant and difficult give that I ever had to do in my career was letting that rap passage be in “Bring Me to Life.” The thing is, for me, personally, I think it made it sound kind of like somebody else. It was in a female Linkin Park kind of place, and that just wasn’t who we were meant to be.
On Evanescence’s label being so determined to have a male voice on “Bring Me to Life”

The reason they wanted us to do that was because they didn’t have faith at the end of the day that a female starting out with a piano all by herself would get played on rock radio. So, I felt really let down in the beginning, because I felt like I sold my soul. I felt like I had to give in and do this thing that I didn’t want to do and let a guy come and save the day so that at least there’s a man’s voice on there. I thought like that for a while, and I really hated it.

But, I’ve been very grateful, and I feel that we’ve been very blessed, because we weren’t seen as just that thing. We did get past that point, and we had another single that was a big on the radio, and none of our other songs were like that. My nightmare was that nobody would ever hear anything else from us again and that one song would be people’s understanding of our sound. So, it was an amazing thing to see our fans get it and respond around the world, and for us to be able to keep going, and for people to have the open hearts and ears to hear more and for us be able to still be doing this today.

It’s funny to talk about all that, because we literally just saw Paul McCoy, the guy that did the rap on that song, in New Orleans, and we have so much love for him, and he got up onstage and we did “Bring Me to Life” together. It brought back so many good memories. There’s so much good about it. But the fight had to be fought, and I did. It’s not that I gave in all the way, by the way. What they originally wanted was for us to hold auditions and have some guy come in and be a member of the band that was on eight out of the 11 songs on the album, and they wanted to change the whole thing, and we refused. I had to go back and live with my parents for a while until we finally settled on, “Okay, you just have to do it for this one song this way.”

On whether she has a sense of pride seeing female artists such as Lzzy Hale and Maria Brink succeed in hard rock and metal today

It makes me so proud anytime I see a woman in the rock world having success and getting the respect that she deserves, because there are so many talented musicians out there of all kinds. It’s really cool to see everybody want to open their hearts and hear something different and go another way, and I absolutely love that women are getting a lot of respect that’s long overdue right now.
On if she’s noticed a difference in the music industry and beyond since the #MeToo movement emerged

I’ve definitely seen a lot of support and encouragement for people speaking out about things they’ve been through that they’ve been afraid to say before, and I appreciate and respect and relate to that, so it does make me proud and happy. For me, it’s not only about women, because there are people of all races, gender — those who have struggled in silence a lot for being different. I’m hoping that we are entering a time where that is more and more not okay and that we are more encouraged to speak up and feel that the people around us can support us just for being who we are.

I don’t see the beauty in a world where everybody’s the same and everybody follows the rules. That’s not what rock is, for sure. So, the more that people can take a deep breath and be brave and honest and speak out about whatever it is — whether it’s some pain they’d had and some hurt that’s been done to them, or just pride in being who they are, although it’s maybe not what everyone would accept — I just think that’s right. We have to keep encouraging that and fighting against the opposite.
On Evanescence touring with a live orchestra last year

It was a really amazing, emotional thing to be playing the piano and then have that part where the strings come in on the record happen all around me live with beautiful, real musicians. It was like being in the middle of a movie score. I’ve dreamed of playing music like that since I was a little girl. My dream before being in a band was to be a composer. It’s funny, because then it turned into rock and metal and all the stuff of the alternative age, and our band came about, but our band has always been a combination between those things with this sort of classical, passionate heart. So, to take it to the other side of the extreme in a live setting healed something in my soul that was always craving it.
On the excitement of performing with different orchestra members each night on tour

It was really, really beautiful. It keeps you on your toes, because I think there were 36 people on the stage every night. And for the most part, it was a totally different crew of people every night. So, every day, the orchestra goes through rehearsal to learn what’s going on that night. We know what we’re doing, but so much of it really does rely on the orchestral part that depending on the people that are there that night and the players and their feel, it’s just a completely different show every night. There were very different emotions, feelings and nuances to hear, so I found it musically very fulfilling.

On how touring as a straight-ahead rock outfit this year is preparing Evanescence to write a new album

You remember how to talk to each other when you’re working together — just working in that live setting, standing around with our instruments and jamming out a little bit and getting excited. And it helps to think about the live show. When we wrote the third album, the self-titled one, it was the first time we really worked that way. We stood around and were in the rehearsal space, very raw and stripped down like a real rock band with no bells and whistles, just making sounds and feeding off of each other in the moment. That made us really think about what was going to be cool at the show. That made for, honestly, as a whole, our favorite album still to this day. Those are all the songs we want to play the most live. When we play a concert, we want to play, obviously, “Bring Me to Life” and the stuff that everybody knows the best. But, the third album was so well-suited to our live feeling that it’s hard to resist playing all of this song.

So, I’m excited to go into that mode again, but my original comfort zone in most writing is fairly solitary — just sitting in a room with ProTools and keyboards and a guitar player and us just kind of layering and thinking and taking our time going over and over the same part. So, there definitely will still be that, and that’s a place that I’m always going to go. But, I’m excited to start out from our raw, live-minded place where we are right now. I think feeding off the energy of these shows right now and going right into a short writing session to start off will be really cool. So, I don’t know what it’s going to sound like, but definitely coming off of doing that very epic and beautiful orchestral thing, we’re ready to at least begin the process from a very raw, more aggressive place.
On “Bring Me to Life” starting to be played on some classic rock radio stations

That’s weird! When I think classic rock, I always think of the same era — the ’70s, ’80s, even and ’60s. But, it’s funny, I guess as we get older, that time moves forward, doesn’t it? So, yeah — weird! (Laughs) I think of classic rock as a genre with Led Zeppelin and stuff. I get it. It’s a classic, cool, call it a classic. But classic rock, that means something else to me!
On what advice she would give young people looking to get into the business

I don’t think there’s some method or recipe for getting to a certain place. I think the one thing that will always remain true, that I stick to throughout time and that works for me, is to make honest music that I truly love and believe in and want to listen to and to try to tune everything else out. There are a lot of different opinions and advice, and it’s very distracting to the art. For me, personally, I’ve fought creative battles all along the way, and they’ve all been worth it, because I think that after all that stuff fades away and the trends change and everything else, you’re the one left having to sing your songs, and you have to have the passion for it to really do it and really for pour your heart into it. I think that that speaks to people more than anything else.

I see that with our fans. We have a lot of really incredible people that are lifers that have been dedicated followers since the beginning in 2000 or 2003, because it just feels like something that is from the heart. It is. I think for me, I, my best advice that I would give an artist is try to tune out the noise and really just do what feels good, because then you’ll do it better, anyway. Go out there and give it everything in your heart.

Our thanks to Amy Lee for taking the time to speak with us. Evanescence recently completed a spring tour, but will be back on the road this summer. See their current itinerary here.

They’re two of the biggest rock and metal bands of this century, but Evanescence and Within Temptation have never shared a stage before. Until last year, in fact, their paths had never even crossed. All that is set to change as the two have lined up a huge European co-headlining tour next April.

Dubbed the Worlds Collide Tour, it will kick off at Brussels’ Palais 12 on April 4 and finish at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome on the 21st. There will also be a UK date at London’s O2 Arena – the biggest non-festival show either band will have played on these shores.

Within Temptation released their seventh album Resist back in February of this year, while Evanescence have spent much of the past two years  supporting Synthesis, which saw the band rework some of their best-known songs with more electronic and orchestral elements. Both groups say that the Worlds Collide Tour will be a wholly new experience, however, with newly-designed stage sets and a unique atmosphere.

Kerrang! caught up with Evanescence’s Amy Lee and Within Temptation’s Sharon den Adel – two of the most creative and influential women in rock – to find out what to expect…

At the risk of being obvious, are you both excited for this tour?
Sharon: “Of course! It’s a different thing for us because we’ve played big shows and venues in some countries, but to do a whole tour like this is something new. And with the two bands, we’re in the same scene and we have some similarities. We also have some differences in the music, of course, but I think the combination makes this tour really strong.”
Amy: “Yes, very much. It’s interesting, I’ve known for a long time that we share fans because I’ve heard of this band through the internet talking and our fans talking about them. The offer came up for us to do this tour together and we’re very excited about it. It just seems to make perfect sense, and we’re all really looking forward to it.”

It’s called the Worlds Collide Tour, but, like you say, there are some similarities. Do you think Within Temptation and Evanescence complement each other well?
Amy: “I really do. We collaboratively chose that name. We feel like we have our two separate worlds, separate lives across the ocean, but in a lot of ways there are some major similarities. And to be able to bring these two worlds together for the first time just seems like a perfect match for both of us. Obviously there are differences, but you want that. You want contrast in the show but it’s cool to be able to see the similarities and embrace those, too.”
Have you had requests to tour together from fans?
Sharon: “Of course, but that often happens with bands who have that overlap in fans. They always ask to do something together but maybe they don’t think it would ever come true. It’s a special one. In the past I remember a lot of my friends getting very excited when Megadeth and Metallica did that tour together many years ago. I remember everyone was very hyped up to see two of their favourite bands together, and it’s a similar sort of thing.”

To put you on the spot, are you fans of each other’s music?
Amy: “I hadn’t ever really dug deep into their music until meeting Sharon for the first time last year when they came to one of our concerts during our orchestral tour. We just instantly really connected in a beautiful way and I was like, ‘You know what, I’ve got to go back and listen to their music now.’ I started finding all these beautiful songs and these melodies that I really liked. It was like I had found something new that had been waiting for me all along.”
Sharon: “I do enjoy their music very much. When Fallen came out [in 2003], it was very important that something new was happening. It was a bit more in the nu-metal corner maybe, while we were doing more of the symphonic stuff and nu-metal was like a new impulse to the whole music industry. It was exciting, it was refreshing and it was something inspirational for a lot of people.” On the subject of inspiration, it shouldn’t be an issue these days but women are still underrepresented in rock and metal. Do you think it’s an inspirational thing touring together in that respect?
Amy: “I hope so. I’ve made efforts and had awesome opportunities to tour with strong, talented women a lot, over the past few years in particular. You know, there are more and more of us in the hard rock world that are being accepted. It makes me feel really happy to see women in the hard rock world especially getting all this respect and revealing themselves and their power onstage. It feels right and it feels overdue. When we were first starting out it was definitely less common to see women in every element of the show-day. And now, more and more, I’m never the only one. I hope that it’s empowering to everyone: men, women, everyone.”
Sharon: “Hopefully it can plant a seed in someone’s heart or mind to think, ‘Okay, it’s possible to go onstage and make music.’ I agree that women are not as represented as men, but it’s not a competition – it’s just about good music. It shouldn’t matter if it’s a guy or a girl, but every time young girls see female musicians and singers up there onstage, then it can be inspirational for other generations.”

Within Temptation’s Resist tour has been very visual with costumes and sci-fi themed stage sets. Do you think this is going to be a continuation of that, or something entirely different?
Sharon: “We’re going to make a new stage set especially for this tour, because the venues are a bit bigger. Most of the time what we brought was too big for the venues we played. But there are people who came to see us already on the Resist tour, so we want to make something special for those people as well. We try to make it so that the visuals support the music, but the music is the most essential thing, of course. You want to have the whole experience and that’s what we’re trying to do with the live show. It’s a whole experience built around the songs and the music.”

The Resist album brought in some different musical elements, with more electronica, pop and industrial sounds. Did that change the experience of the live show?
Sharon: “No, because live you play things differently again. But for us those elements have been very important on the last album. It’s more of a modern sound and we embrace development. It’s the next step in the evolution of the band I think, to explore new things that are going on. We do bring that to the live stage, but in a different way than how it is on the record.”

And Amy, what can we expect from Evanescence on this forthcoming tour?
Amy: “We’re definitely going to get creative with our production. I feel like this is something that will enable us, we’re going to be playing some very big venues and I think just the whole image of the two bands together could be something just… bigger. I want it to look special. We’re just now in the phase of having creative conversations about what to do that can be new, interesting, creative and exciting for everyone.”

Did the Synthesis tour change the way you view or approach some of the songs?
Amy: “Yes. This isn’t a continuation of that tour, by the way – we’re back to the rock show! But that whole experience of doing the orchestra tour was really mind-opening. It made us work outside of our comfort zone; the band had to sit down, I wore high heels (laughs). It was all very strange, but more seriously it was about interpreting these songs differently and looking at them in a different way. You had to be brave because there’s no hiding in the strobe lights, or making your hair go over your face when you’re not feeling confident! You are literally on display with all your vulnerability, and that’s what I wanted to capture. That tightrope vulnerability mixed with the incredible strength of when it all lines up right with the orchestra. That experience was really special, and it has given us new inspiration now we’re back on the rock tour and also writing a new album – taking that chapter and putting it in our back pockets as something new that we can apply to our music. I’m not talking about pouring an orchestra into the music – we’ve always done that. I mean as a sense of emotion and raw exposure. That’s something that I’ve come to really embrace, rather than be afraid of like I used to be.”

Is there any timeframe for the album, and are you likely to have any new music for this tour?
Amy: “I don’t know. We definitely have a great start and we’re planning on having the album done at some point next year. We don’t have it down to a month, but we’re working on it, we’re writing and touring and it feels good to have multiple things going on at once. We have these shows, and we have a cool cover of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain that we got the chance to do for the new Gears Of War game. So we’re going to rush on and finish recording that and then go into more writing. It’s fun. You’ve got to keep it fresh: don’t let your mind get stale or bored.”
Sharon, after the Hydra world tour you were burned out and had personal issues to deal with. Did you discuss this and change the way you tour as a band?
Sharon: “Yes, very much so. It’s finding a balance between two different worlds in my professional life and being on tour and my family life. We’ve been doing it so we’re on tour for two weeks then at home for two weeks. We have a real break in between, even though that will make the tour stretch out longer in the end. We’ll still play the same amount of shows but it’s important to have that time at home in between, so you’re not just away for months at a time. You can combine those two worlds that you’re living in.”

And, finally, will there be any friendly rivalry between your two bands?
Sharon: “I don’t think there will be rivalry. We’ve said that there are some similarities, but you just go and do your own thing. I’m just looking forward to it in a very positive way and I’m sure both bands will do our best.”
Amy: “Yeah, I don’t think so. We have a lot of respect for each other and we’re all just very excited to do this. Sharon is a very lovely and down-to-earth person. I haven’t spent as much time with all the guys, but they seem to be as well. I think we’re just going to have fun. I don’t like touring with people I don’t like to be around. I generally just don’t do that, so we’re all very excited to spend some time together and be around each other.”

Evanescence and Within Temptation will play the O2 Arena in London on April 7, 2020, as part of the Worlds Collide tour.

It was all supposed to kick off April 2020, the big “Worlds Collide Tour”, the co-headlining tour of Dutch rock band Within Temptation and American metal Evanescence. Unfortunately, due to the worldwide outbreak of the Corona Virus, the two bands were forced to reschedule their massive European tour to later that year, September 2020. Now the world is slowly getting out of their lockdown, will the rescheduled tour take place in the original rescheduled dates, or will this tour be rescheduled once more?

The Worlds Collide Tour story

Both bands are loved by millions of rock and metal fans all over the world and a possible collaboration was asked for years. In 2019, both bands hinted to something upcoming at the same times. Fans were excited the bands were finally collaborating on something, even though it was yet uncertain what the bands were about to do.

The first time the band members of both bands met was at a live show of Evanescence in 2018. At this moment, Evanescence singer Amy Lee explored the Within Temptation songs. The two bands met again at a Swiss festival on which both bands were scheduled to perform, at this festival the two bands agreed a tour together was a great idea. On 17 September 2019, the bands finally revealed their “Worlds Collide Tour”, which was originally scheduled for start April 2020. Passing through seven European countries.

COVID-19 Rescheduled Tour

Due to the massive outbreak of the COVID-19 Virus worldwide, the two bands were forced to reschedule their tour to a later time. They chose to reschedule all dates – except for the Frankfurt one – to September 2020. The Hamburg show got a venue upgrade, now to be performed at the Barclaycard Arena. However, how certain are the two bands the “Worlds Collide Tour” can take place this September?

The future according to specialists is very uncertain. Massive events, such as festivals and indoor concerts are possible to be rescheduled or canceled until there is a worldwide vaccin. On 14 June 2020, the CEO of Belgians biggest venue group, Sportpaleis Groep, Jan Van Esbroeck announced all big events and concerts will most likely not take place until 2021, when there’s a vaccin.

News brought to light that concerts in Germany, of which most of the “Worlds Collide Tour” will be, will be forced to be cancelled or removed until the end of October 2019.
“Worlds Collide Tour” in 2021

As of 18 June, the official Evanescence site shows an empty ‘Upcoming shows’-section and as of 19 June 2020, the “Worlds Collide Tour”-page also appears without a trace of any event dates. With this information, we can say both bands are now looking into rescheduling their collaboration tour onwards to 2021. An official announcement is yet to be made.

The new dates:

    08 September 2021: Zurich, Switzerland
    09 September 2021: Milan, Italy
    11 September 2021: Berlin, Germany
    12 September 2021: Gliwice, Poland
    14 September 2021: Leipzig, Germany

Released in late April, "Wasted on You" is the first song off of the band's forthcoming album The Bitter Truth, their first record since 2011. Heavy on frontwoman Amy Lee's strong vocals, the song has been steadily climbing charts and getting critical praise, from the New York Times to Elle. The song comes out at strange time in the world, but Lee, who prefers communication via email, is still full steam ahead with more new music to come. Here, an email correspondence with the 38 year-old, who is now married with a son, from quarantine.

How are you doing? What does a typical day in quarantine look like for you right now?

Josh, my husband, gets up (way too early) with Jack while I sleep in almost every day. He’s awesome and I feel guilty about it but I just LOVE SLEEP and I can’t stop taking advantage. I pick out which PJ pants I’m gonna wear today and eat an avocado for breakfast. Jack and I make slime or do a science experiment of some kind, watch cartoons, and at some point I head into my studio to either write or do interviews or whatever. I usually make dinner, or we grill while Jack plays outside. Bath and bedtime for Jack, oftentimes I go back to the studio again to finish what I was doing and then I finally get to tend to my garden on Animal Crossing till I pass out on the couch.

Why was now the right time to release "Wasted on You"? Did you think about delaying it once the pandemic hit?

Well, the original plan was to release a different song, and yes, at first the thought was just to delay releasing that one or anything. As days went by and we realized how big of a deal the pandemic really was, and how long it might be before we could work “normally” again, we decided waiting indefinitely just wasn’t what we wanted. Life is too short. But the song we were going to release didn’t fit the moment anymore. So I thought about the songs we had finished already, and "Wasted on You" was coming from a place that really felt like what we were suddenly going through, so we went with that one first instead.

What has it been like to promote a new single during this time?

Super weird. I mean, I can run my Pro Tools rig and I can track a vocal by myself, but ask me to film myself in real-time over the internet with the proper tags and stuff and I just suck, man. Live Zoom interviews, performance streams, all the DIY tech I have to do for promo now is killing me. I mean, I stuck with cassettes a full five years after CDs became standard. As Erykah Badu put it, I’m an analog girl in a digital world!

The single has been getting great reviews — were you expecting this? What about the song do you think resonates so much right now?

That’s awesome. It’s made me really happy to see people excited about the new music. You know, I spend a lot of time thinking about songs I’m writing in terms of sound and vibe and letting that guide what happens lyrically to some degree. I’ve been making a new point of putting the meaning first lately. Making that the most important thing. Maybe it's working.

What was your mindset when you began writing this album?

It's going to be a journey. One of the songs we’ve recorded so far is from 10 years ago, from the first time we went in to record our third album. Completely reformed into a special new thing. Up to now, some of the songs are being written now, some aren’t even written yet. And so much has happened this year, there’s so much to say. So yes there are themes, but I think the biggest one is about time. Past, present, and future all at once. And part of that has to do with how the album is still a living, growing thing, as it is being slowly released. Like life.

How is what is going on in the world impacting the album's progress?

We are coming to a point where we really need to get together to get it done. So far that hasn’t been safely possible, so we have been working remotely, sending ideas to each other and I still have plenty of lyrics to write to songs that are otherwise ready to record. We are now starting to look at how and when we can get together. Beyond that it's hard to always be productive when things are such a mess. I’m worried for my family and anxious about the next school year for my son and wondering what the future holds for live music and touring. But I have found some real good in having the time to let creative thoughts form. Music video ideas, merch ideas, the album cover, lyrical concepts, so many things.

The band has long been called a "goth" band — do you identify with that? What does "goth" mean in 2020?

I’m honestly not sure what it’s ever meant. I’ve never been one to fit into any one box, musically or otherwise. But do I sing about sad shit? Yes. Do I like minor chords? Yes. Am I culturally cynical? Yes. But I also collect tiny plastic food and love Tenacious D and there’s a duck quacking on our second album just for fun. So….

It's been nearly 20 years since your first full-length album — how has the band evolved in those two decades?

I could write a book answering this question! So much has happened. Perspective is a powerful thing, it made me a better writer, it made me a more compassionate person. The experience of playing so many concerts, as a band, just makes you improve. And it gives you the confidence knowing you’re where you’re meant to be. Styles and inspirations change, and we’re always going to be trying new things, but we know who we are and aren’t going to lose that. The talent level of the guys (and other gal) in the band is so high, I’m lucky to have them. We all enjoy pushing ourselves (and each other) and we all dig being challenged.

How has taking breaks between records helped keep the creative process feeling fresh? What do you do during those times?

Taking on projects that let me be creative in different ways, and show different sides of myself make me feel empowered and inspired. I feel like the more I allow myself to follow through with creative urges, the more satisfied I feel and the less Evanescence feels like “the same old thing.” You gotta break it up to keep your head clear and to stay inspired I think. Also, you have to live life before you can sing about it. I have experienced a lot of things I never had before since we wrote an album.

What have been the most significant shifts that you've seen in the music industry over the past years? How has that affected the music you're making and how you are putting it out?

A big one is the shift of focus from albums to songs. The way we consume music now is so limitless, everything is a tap away. So we skip from song to song, feeling to feeling, short attention span, all that. I actually like it. We’re still making albums. I love making albums. But I don’t have to feel like I need to make an album just to release a song. I don’t need a reason. We can do whatever, whenever. Just like the listeners. And that’s awesome.

When it was finally finished, Amy Lee slipped outside of her house by herself. It was late; everyone inside was already fast asleep. She ventured out into the garden and climbed into the sanctuary of her son’s tree house – away from the world, away from all distraction. After months and months of gruelling writing and soul-searching, there was nothing more to change. Nothing more to be tweaked. Nothing left for Amy to do but lay on top of a sleeping bag, get her headphones – good headphones – and press play. As she looked up at the surrounding night sky and branches, she listened to The Bitter Truth, Evanescence’s first all-new studio album in a decade.

“It was a perfect feeling,” reflects Amy today of that moment. “It was just satisfaction, true satisfaction.”
Kerrang Cover Story31 Evanescence

She is recalling this experience from her parents’ home in Arkansas, where Amy and her son are visiting at the time of K!’s call. That she sounds in such high spirits is not only down to her being liberated from the pressure cooker of album deadlines, but also the fact that they’re snowed in. Like, really, really snowed in. And that means one thing. “We’re doing a lot of sledding,” she laughs.

Loathe as we are to ever have to interrupt some well-earned rock star tobogganing, the imminent arrival of Evanescence’s excellent fourth album – and let the record show that Amy considers The Bitter Truth, not 2017’s record of orchestral re-workings Synthesis, their fourth album – trumps all other concerns.

You might think you know everything about it by now. Recorded during the pandemic, and drip-released throughout, no other Evanescence album has been preceded by so many singles. Last year, Amy opened up about the power and poignancy of some of these tracks – how, for example, the testimony of Chanel Miller, the survivor of a 2015 sexual assault by her fellow Stanford University student Brock Turner, influenced her to write Use My Voice. But make no mistake: in sound and theme, the singles so far are just the tip of the iceberg.
“When something isn’t quite our best, I know, and I can’t let that be good enough”

Hear Amy Lee discuss how Evanescence pushed themselves on The Bitter Truth with the help of producer Nick Raskulinecz

Amy conceived of The Bitter Truth as a journey. It begins with the compelling abstract noises of two-part opener Artifact/The Turn – the former the product of her “by myself in my hotel room on tour”, the latter a collaboration with Scott Kirkland of the Crystal Method. “I see the beginning of the album as starting from a Ground Zero place after a tragedy, and then, when the guitars come in, for me, that’s getting back up,” she explains.

Which brings us neatly to Broken Pieces Shine: a stunning track that sees Evanescence – completed by guitarists Jen Majura and Troy McLawhorn, bassist Tim McCord and drummer Will Hunt – in world-beating form. It is also, arguably, the greatest song ever conceived during a spot of grocery shopping.

“We were in Canada on a writing camp trip out in the woods in 2019,” recalls Amy, before noting how the hunter-gatherer duties in the band were split. “The men went to go get music stuff that we forgot, like a snare stand and whatever else, and the women went to the grocery store (laughs). On the way back, we were just showing each other ideas in the car on our phones, little pre-recorded demos and stuff. Jen had this really cool idea that turned into that chugging verse music. I just started rewinding it and singing on it over and over.”

It may have started out life as a fun way to pass time in the car, but it has come to mean much, much more to its creator.

“I see Broken Pieces Shine as an anthem for us and our fans,” says Amy. “From the beginning, I visualised us onstage in that ‘together moment’. It’s about letting yourself fall apart, letting those flaws become the things that we not only accept about ourselves, but also embrace. To be your true self rather than holding it in is truly freeing. We have things about us that we may see as flaws, but just change your perspective a little bit – our flaws can be our superpowers. That’s what makes us different. That’s what makes us unique.”

It’s a song about the pain and beauty of survival, the wisdom bred from suffering, the grace that can be found in the acceptance of what is. In so many ways, Amy Lee has learned these lessons the hard way…
Amy Lee Eric Ryan Anderson 2021

“Thanks!” enthuses Amy Lee. “I don’t fit into metal categories for nothin’!” This is her response when Kerrang! observes that, on some of the lyrics on The Bitter Truth, Amy sounds like someone you really wouldn’t want to piss off. She had given us fair warning about this, of course – last year hinting that we would once again get a glimpse of the “catty vibe” that defined Evanescence’s classic single Call Me When You’re Sober. It’s just that on some of these new tracks, Amy comes across as someone who will, if you push her too far, not only stick the knife in and twist the blade, but also break it off at the handle. And then make you eat the handle. The aptly-named Take Cover, for example, sees her threaten to become ‘the bitch you make me out to be’ over rumbling blasts of bass and twisted riffs. It’s hard to tell what she’s out for in the song… is it justice or revenge?

“Caaaaaaaaan’t it be both?” she laughs, elongating the can’t so much it almost morphs into a creaking sound.

It’s one of many songs on The Bitter Truth in which Amy toys with both the illusion of fame and the people who have tried to gaslight her during her career. Recent single Yeah Right lit this particular fuse – it not only stunned with its deft move into Goldfrappian electro territory, but also its acid-tongued sarcasm. ‘Yeah, I’m a rock star,’ sings Amy over bubbling synth notes. ‘I’m a queen resurrected just as messed up as before.’ This is something dialled up to 11 on the ominous throb of Better Without You – a song that sees Amy deliver the lines: ‘’Cause this is my world, little girl you’d be lost on your own… I’ll do you a favour if you sign on the dotted line.’
“It starts out totally raw; just the real life thing”

Amy Lee on writing The Bitter Truth's moving opener Artifact/The Turn – and how producer Nick Raskulinecz convinced her to keep it raw

It’s hard to read this and not think of the misogyny and double standards Amy Lee has spoken about encountering while traversing the alpha male-riddled rock world, both onstage and off. Be it recalling how she was told Bring Me To Life had to feature a male co-singer against her wishes, or revealing to K! last year how she felt the pressure to “look my best, be a certain weight and be beautiful”, she’s had no shortage of battles.

Amy explains that she’s spent a good deal of time sifting through her past of late. She’s even gone so far to allocate some time to going through old audio and video that she had stashed away in her attic for years. Terrified they would be lost, she’s been converting old cassettes to digital.

“It’s just making me zoom out and see my life as a whole,” she explains. “It’s been really, really fascinating, and jogged my memory about a lot of things. So that actually influenced me in some of this writing and seeing things from a new perspective, but also seeing them how they were.”

So where does this leave a song like Better Without You?

“The song is really hard…” she begins. “I can’t lie in the music. And over time, that’s become truer and truer. I’m peeling away more of the layers of imagery and really being specific at times just saying what I really need to get off my chest. Some of what I’m saying are things that I’m not comfortable breaking down and explaining, because I don’t want to bring up old drama. Better Without You is a difficult song to describe and go into detail about. And so is Yeah Right, actually.”

Amy Lee is an extremely open interviewee: friendly, impassioned and intent on driving to the heart of a question, even when it hurts to do so. That said, there have still been times in K!’s interviews over the years where she’s referenced parts of her story that she didn’t wish to re-inhabit; parts of her life that she wanted to fence off to the world, and even herself. We wonder if we are finally hearing some of those untold stories now in the lyrics on The Bitter Truth?

“You are,” she says. “Take Cover, Yeah Right and Better Without You all touch on some elements of my past that I am…”

A brief pause.

“I have moved on,” she continues. “But apparently there’s still some things that I needed to get off my chest.”

Was that a surprise that those old feelings of anger were still there and came out this way?

“Well, I should say this: the seeds of both Yeah Right and Take Cover, much of them were written, from a lyrical standpoint, a decade ago,” Amy replies. “So think about what was going on in 2010 and some of the stuff that was a little bit closer to the forefront of my mind. Better Without You, though, that’s real and in-the-moment. It’s not like there’s one big secret [person] to blame. Better Without You talks about all the obstacles along the way, moving from the past into the present time. I have different parts of the song that are assigned to different people and entities in my mind. But I don’t think calling people out when I’ve already defeated all my monsters along the way is really something I want to do.”

Will these people know these songs are about them when they hear it?

“I don’t know,” she ponders. “Probably. I’ve been seeing it like this: ‘If you think it’s about you, you’re right!’”

Clearly these are songs that cut deep. And yet, there is one moment on The Bitter Truth that goes even deeper…
Amy Lee Eric Ryan Anderson 2021 2

Amy Lee still remembers the peculiar colour of the sky over Cape Canaveral on January 28, 1986. She was just five years old at the time. Somewhere in the world a picture still exists of her holding an icicle on that bracingly cold day; it was a big deal to young Amy, as she wasn’t used to seeing snow where she was from.

Her family had travelled that day to see Francis R. Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe board NASA’s Space Shuttle Challenger and blast off into outer space. They waited and waited for the countdown, yet there was no sign of lift-off. Tired of waiting, eventually the Lee family took a break to get some food.

“When we came back, the sky was black,” says Amy, recalling the aftermath of the Challenger explosion that cost the lives of all astronauts onboard and which went down in history as the darkest day in the American space programme. “It had just happened and everybody was standing there looking up at the sky with their mouth open. My dad asked what happened and some guy was like, ‘It just blew up.’”

This was not Amy’s only encounter with death in her adolescence.
Amy Lee Eric Ryan Anderson 2021 5

“As a young kid I had quite a few impactful moments,” she says. “Obviously, that one wasn’t anywhere near as impactful as losing my sister [when Amy was just a child]. But I was faced with trying to understand our mortality at a younger age than a lot of kids around me. It always made me feel a little bit different, just to have to understand and be aware that I could die; that that happens, and there’s no fair set amount of time that you are entitled to. I’ll never forget what the sky looked like that day.”

The vocalist famously known for singing My Immortal has, then, from a young age, been acutely aware of the spectre of mortality. Last year, she told K! about the devastating loss of her younger brother Robby – who had battled severe epilepsy – in January 2018. His presence can be intuited on The Bitter Truth’s most astounding track Far From Heaven – a gorgeous piano ballad complete with swelling strings from composer (and Synthesis collaborator) David Campbell. Surprisingly, this, the emotional epicentre of the album almost didn’t make the record. When The Bitter Truth was originally finished, it was ballad deficient. And that was fine.

“We were all just going, ‘Hey, you know what? Every album is different – we don’t have to have that [type of] song every time,’” recalls Amy of their thought process.

Not only was she exhausted, time was also fast running out for any new songs to even make the deadline.

“I was really struggling,” she says. “I wasn’t feeling full of aggression, and all the strength and power – and there’s so much of that on this album – I just didn’t have any left when we got to that point.”

Only it turns out that she did. All Amy had to do was sit down at the piano.

“Far From Heaven just came out,” she says. “It just needed to come out of me. That was the last thing on the album. It completed the puzzle.”
Amy Lee Eric Ryan Anderson 2021 4

Far From Heaven not only showcases the maturation of Evanescence’s sound, but in particular the power and nuance of Amy’s songwriting. Upon first listen it seems to address her late brother Robby, her voice freighted with emotion as she delivers piercing lines like, ‘What I wouldn’t give to be with you for one more night.’ And it is, she confirms, about him indirectly. Far From Heaven details a state of mourning that distorts both time and memory; the crosscurrents of grief that register not only as a permanent scar on the heart but also as a tremor in the soul.

“It’s about questioning my faith,” explains Amy. “And it’s not like it’s the first time, but it’s just very raw, real and in the hardest way I ever have. Having to really look at it and wonder, ‘Is anybody out there?’ That’s a real question I’ve been asking over the past couple years, through everything, and I don’t have the answers. I never have had the answers. That’s the whole thing that makes belief belief. We just can believe, we don’t know. But it’s not just about that. That’s part of the reason it was so hard to write, I spent two or three weeks just stuck in this funk, like in this depression, trying to get it off my chest because it’s not the way that I feel all the time. But it is a feeling that I have that comes up in me regularly: wondering where the people are that I’ve lost, and thinking about time in a more fluid way.”

There are no easy answers here.

“I do believe love exists beyond life, part of that is connected, I think, to holding on to [lost loved ones] inside ourselves,” she continues. “It’s more than a memory. It was real, it really happened – what existed still exists. I’m talking about it, so it does. It is really deeply hard to talk about, not because it’s so painful for me, but because it’s very difficult to put into words. I just needed to face the abyss head on. That was one thing that was missing from the album. Honestly, part of me, in this time, has been facing the grief and darkness. And with all the hope, and joy and empowerment that I truly do feel – and so much of the album comes from that place – I just can’t gloss over and not also admit the other side… I talk about my siblings, because those are the obviously to the closest to me, but there’s been a lot of loss in my life, I’ve been through it plenty of times. I’m reminded every time with grief that there’s a choice you have to make for yourself between life and death; between getting up or not. You have to talk about the struggle of that.”
Evanescence Header Kerrang Exclusive 2020 Credit Perou

It strikes K! that a song like this could be the kind an artist makes and either feels an enormous sense of catharsis, or one they write and never want to hear or play it again…

“While writing it, I felt so low,” Amy admits. “I was just living in it without an out. When it was finished, I really loved it; it’s beautiful. Even when a song is openly dark and about pain, it can bring me joy. Sometimes you just need to say that hard thing you’ve been locking down inside, get it out, process it, and then move on to the next song.”

This past Christmas, Amy played the album for her family. Her dad is, she says, “a music guy”. He was once in a band himself before he made the choice to pursue a family life, and explored a career in radio. He’s 10 years retired, but even now Amy says she’ll hear him doing voice work on TV for insurance companies (“You’d never know it’s him, but to me it’s like, ‘Dad!’”).

“He does a lot of studying on artists and songwriting,” she says. “He’s that guy. So after every song we sit, break it down and talk about it.”

What did he make of Far From Heaven?

“That song,” says Amy, softly, “that song made him cry.”

Were the album to end on this note, it would make for a very different record. As stands, The Bitter uth ends on a note not of doubt, but of hope with Blind Belief.

“I believe it’s in us as a human race to survive this time,” she says. “Absolutely, I believe we will get through this. But, of course, I don’t know for sure. Ending the album with Blind Belief was deliberate, particularly the line ‘love over all’, because that’s impossibly hard to say, especially when we’ve seen the evil that’s crept out of the dark corners in broad daylight in the last few years. Not that we’ve never seen that before, but it’s just been so in our face, especially as Americans. Even so, I believe we do need love over all. It should be simple, but it is complicated. The album is a journey through grief, among other things. The ending is reaching that seemingly impossible point of acceptance. Forgiveness, honour, remembrance and love over all. And when I come to the end of all those feelings – including the rage, the grief, all of that all mixed up – I feel released. I feel like I want to step into the future.”About the future, then. It’s taken a year of hard work to end a decade of waiting for Evanescence fans. Not to get greedy, but when will it be acceptable to ask Amy about another album after this one?

“Ten years!” she says. “Just kidding. I mean, I already feel like I need to do something creative again.”

For now it’s time for the world to experience what Amy Lee did that night she pressed play on The Bitter Truth in her son’s tree house.

We left nothing behind on this one, so I hope people like it,” she says. “And if they don’t? No regrets from me. I’ll tell you this: I put my whole self into it.”

Evanescence’s The Bitter Truth is released on March 26 via Sony Music.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have some very big news to share.
Introducing our new guitarist…
TIM MCCORD!!
After 16 years in the band as our rock solid bass player, Tim is taking a turn on his original instrument. Spoiler alert- he’s great at it.
And on bass, it is our extreme pleasure to welcome the incredibly talented Emma Anzai of Sick Puppies! We’ve been friends and fans for years, and the time has finally come to join forces.
Emma will be pulling double duty as we have some shows with Sick Puppies coming up soon, so get ready for that! We are all very excited to bring this new formation to the stage for the first time in Athens on June 5. See you soon!

Jen Majura has opened up about her exit from EVANESCENCE, saying she is "still in shock" about being fired from the Amy Lee-fronted band.

The 39-year-old guitarist's departure from EVANESCENCE was announced on May 21 via social media.

"It has been a very special chapter in the band with our dear friend Jen Majura, but we have decided it's time to go our separate ways," EVANESCENCE said in a statement. "We will always love her and support her, and can't wait to see what she does next! We are so grateful for the good times and great music we made all around the world together."

During an appearance on THE HAUNTED guitarist Ola Englund's YouTube show "Coffee With Ola", Majura spoke about her split with EVANESCENCE, saying that she is still "hurt" by the move and comparing the situation to a divorce.

"I believe, honestly, it's three weeks now since I got the news, and I'm still in this blurry, oblivious momentum," she said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). "I guess I'm still in shock, kind of, because after being married six years, all of a sudden you're divorced.

"You know me, I always try to find the positive in a situation, so every day, step by step — I'm not doing great yet — but every day I find little tiny things that I'm, like, 'Oh, actually, this is good.'"

Asked how she found out that her services were no longer needed in EVANESCENCE, Jen said: "Honestly, I was cleaning my apartment, and I got the phone call. And first of all, I was, like, 'Is this a bad joke?' And I remember, after I got the news, I hung up, and I have this hallway in between my studio and my living room, and I just lay there on the floor, staring at the ceiling, wondering what that was, and literally looking over to my suitcase that I had already started packing, because I was two weeks from going out on the road until pretty much the end of the year."

Majura went on to say that she has already received offers to join other bands but she is reluctant to jump into another situation so soon after her exit from EVANESCENCE. "I would like to consider [some of these other offers], but not now, not yet," she explained. "Because I feel like it would be not a nice move if I played the okay person when I'm still processing. I'm not ready to jump into the next marriage right now.

"To be really honest, what I wanna do right now is, first of all, focus on me and my music again," she said. "Because what I realize is that you, when you… It's difficult to say… I feel like I lost a little bit of my music inside of me during these past years, because… What I right now do, what I right now want to do is I wanna reconnect with myself and feel and hear and play my music again. And who knows? The plan is, so far — you heard it here first — I'm gonna write my third solo album."

Asked by Ola if she is "okay" with the fact that her tenure with EVANESCENCE has come to an end, Jen said: "I'm hurt. I'm hurt and still in this blurry confusion of what just happened." But she added: "I'm getting there. Like I said, it would be wrong of me if I would play the 'hey, I'm totally okay' Jen. It's tough. And like I said, I'm still not great. But I'm getting there every day with tiny little things that make life beautiful."

Majura, a self-described "half-Asian living in Germany," joined EVANESCENCE in August 2015 as the replacement for Terry Balsamo.

EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee has opened up about the recent departure of guitarist Jen Majura, explaining that "sometimes you have to listen to the universe."

Majura's exit from EVANESCENCE was announced in late May, with the band saying in a statement that " we have decided it's time to go our separate ways."

EVANESCENCE's new lineup includes Emma Anzai of SICK PUPPIES on bass and EVANESCENCE's longtime bassist Tim McCord on guitar.

Amy addressed EVANESCENCE's split with Jen in a new interview with Revolver magazine. Speaking about the band's new lineup, she said: "I am so happy, we are all so, so grateful. Emma Anzai is from the band SICK PUPPIES and we are old friends. We toured together in 2007 and she's just an excellent musician. We're all fans of her and just fits us on a personal level really well.

"We did a little European run in June and then we did a few shows here and had our first photo shoot with the new lineup just two weeks ago," she continued. "Some things are just meant to be. Something I'm getting better at as I get older is not trying to control everything so much. Sometimes you just sort of have to listen to the universe and what's going on and go, 'You know what? Okay, I need to live in the reality of what's happening now and make something great out of it instead of constantly trying to pull things the way I think they ought to go.'

"It's hard to explain what I'm saying without being specific. And we all love Jen; we had a great time with Jen. don't want to make it like it's anything negative there. But sometimes that chapter just ends, and when you feel that and you know that as a band, that's how you keep things going. That's how you keep your team, your band, and everything healthy and moving the way it's supposed to move. It's complicated but at the same time you just need to follow your heart. At the end of the day, when you follow your heart and trust each other, you can move forward into a better place than you could've imagined for.

"This is big time new for us because I've had Tim on bass for 16 years and for the first time he is on guitar, which is fantastic," Lee added. "It's his original instrument, he's great on it, he gets into that position when we're in the writing room a lot. And Emma is just this amazing, seamless ... it's just amazingly cool and the other guys are just thrilled with it as well. We're all really happy right now, we're in a healthy new chapter moment. Those are always really energizing, so we've got a lot of energy and are feeling inspired and excited for the future."

In late June, Majura discussed her exit from EVANESCENCE during an appearance on THE HAUNTED guitarist Ola Englund's YouTube show "Coffee With Ola". At the time she said that she was "still in shock, kind of, because after being married six years, all of a sudden you're divorced."

Asked by Ola if she was "okay" with the fact that her tenure with EVANESCENCE had come to an end, Jen said: "I'm hurt.
